Atari 1200XL Restoration Part 01: Computer
We try to restore Atari's first attempt at an answer to the Commodore 64. The 1200XL is an uncommon Atari 8-bit computer, and this one came with an even more uncommon floppy drive that we'll tackle later.

The built-in Basic only supports 64K. It doesn't matter how much memory you have installed.

Good luck on the 5150 repairs! I have one too and mine also came broken. These are built like tanks so once you get it back in shape it should be reliable for a long time again.

IBM used all off-the-shelf parts to build their early PCs. Likewise for most expansion cards. These needed big power supplies and big cases.
$60 is a pretty good deal even non-working. Looking forward to the restoration! Sure hope the CRT is not shot.

Next time you're in Tucson check out Elliott's Electronics Surplus store. They have a nice collection of 1990's to 2010 ish PC hardware, some 1970's removable disk platters, dumb terminals etc. Also SWS Electronics on Speedway has a complete Apple ][ system on sale for only $400.

Sounds like a fun giveaway. I actually dusted off my Apple iic and cleaned it up for my son a while back. There is nothing like being able to just flip a machine on and have a BASIC prompt as an option. Regardless of the age of the machine it is still a great way to get into programming.
