My DIY Corn Crib on the Homestead

This is my little corn crib that I built out of a cage for a 275 gallon tote tank. I got this idea from another guy on UA-cam and made my own version. I grow a small patch of field corn to feed my chickens and this little crib works very well for storing the ear corn.

I know they get a bad wrap but honestly I'd rather pay their prices I've had my 20v Max Drill and Impact for about 3 years haven't even replaced a battery or charger yet
@@strhaivenswr I have most of the 12v tools at this point and haven't had any issues with any of them. They are great for the money.
Didn’t you leave out a lot of info? What characteristics of ears do look for selecting that ear for seeds? When do you pick the ears used for seed?
I have had a 1987 255 gear driven with 4Wd, power steering, heated cab and loader. It's a dandy machine equipped with a 5 foot snowblower and a 6' finish mower for summer. This fall I placed 40 yd. of topsoil, using a 5' box blade as a counter weight. I rigged an electric rotation system for the blower from a power seat motor,
@@rodcros That sounds like a nice setup you got. My next tractor will definitely have a loader. Thanks for watching.
I like your window😊
@@SethHenigman Thanks for watching.
1 year update video please
@@ThineLesser I may do that here soon. I haven't had any issues with any of the tools and have gotten several more since I made this video. Thanks for watching.
Good for you. Everything looks brand new including that us general cart
Great video and great information
@@wemcal Thanks for watching.
You could squeeze twice as sorghum rows as you put in or you could plant cover crops in between the rows.
@@BlahBlah122-b2t I plant it with a corn planter that is setup on 36 inch rows and it is helpful because I can till between the rows when the sorghum is small. Cover crops between the rows is a great idea that I need to look into. Thanks for watching.
@shepshomestead cover crops intermixed in between rows allows a sort of relay team for fields so your fields are never bare and you can have livestock graze off the cover crops, even chickens can highly benefit from them. The trick is the right mix, planted at the right time so it doesn't out compete your primary crop. For example most will inter-plant in between corn rows at the V4 stage of corn.
I’m going to go look at one with 4800 hrs on it. It is at a dealer so they claim it works fine. I’m nervous to get someone’s problem and the clutch is item 1. Is there anything 😂law you would suggest?
@@stephensummerlot3288 I would just suggest driving it around a little bit and make sure everything works as it should. You should be able to tell if the clutch is going out, if it is very bad. Good luck with it. Thanks for watching.
What kind of sorghum do you plant? Where do you buy the seeds? thank you, great video
@@mrs.rogers7582 The variety is called Martin Milo. I can't remember which company I ordered it from but I'm sure it is easy to find. I only bought seed one year and have been saving it ever since. Thanks for watching.
I'm growing Martin Milo for the first time this year. They are turning quite orange now so it'll be ready to harvest before too long. I'm trying to harvest is early enough that I can get a second crop off of it later in the fall.
@@rontropics26 It produces a pretty good yield. Thanks for watching.
That is great. I have a cushman truckster with hydraulic dump and I would never be without one, the ammount of time the dump body saves is tremendous.
@@cdfps750 It is super handy. Thanks for watching.
Thats a pretty nice tractor i have the same one but mines a Case IH 254 not a 245 otherwise these are neat little machines
Thanks. It's done everything that I've needed it to do. I believe the 254 is the series right before mine. Thanks for watching.
I wanted 1/4” anvil ratchet but HY don’t offer it as of June 2024. Well I got at $15-$19 Harbor Frieght Central Pneumatic 1/4” air ratchet and swapped out the anvil drive portion of the head and now I have 1/4” and 3/8 Hyper Tough 12v ratchets. The HF air ratchets are now 3/8” drive. 🤓🔥
That sounds awesome! I hadn't thought of doing that. I'd love to see one of those conversions. Thanks for sharing
looking to get a wiring diagrham for mine i have the same one any help would be appreciated thanks
I don't happen to have one but you may be able to find a service manual online and that should have one. There may be one available online somewhere but I wouldn't know where to look. Good luck and thanks for watching.
Your missing 12v 3/8 impact wrench which is my personal favorite I've got 2 of them
I actually just recently got the 3/8 impact. I really like it too
😊👍👍
Lol I have the m12 stubby and the kit cost more than all these tools 😂😂
No need to brag bud lol. People buying HT are most DIYers who don't wanna spend a bunch of money on higher end tools. Personally, I only buy milwaukee fuel and non fuel and I'm just a DIY guy who sometimes does side work.
Hanging them on the tobacco sticks, did you ever run into mice problems?
I'm sure that mice could probably get it if they wanted to. My biggest problem is birds getting it over a long period of time. If the sorghum was stored in an enclosed area it would be better. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the images of the hammer rack. Tried to copy the crude one I had for my old green cart with abysmal results. Based on your video I built one that has more space and looks better than what I tried to recreate. Wish I knew how to send you an image of the finished product.
You're welcome! I'm glad it was helpful. I've found the hammer rack very useful.
If you can find an old treadmill, the tread belts on them are super durable. I used them as drawer liners on my old series 2 4 drawer cart. I was going to use some on the top of my new series 3 5 drawer but the widest belt I had was too narrow and I didn't feel like having to trim 2 pieces to fit.
Cool idea. Thanks for the tip and thanks for watching.
So the greenhouse lets you start seeds early correct....but what do you do with it during the summer months? Im assuming it gets too hot during the heat of summer? Here in West Texas we see summer temps over 100, so I can only imagine it would be too hot inside even with the auto sensing window for ventilation. I do think it would be helpful in early spring to get a headstart on plants and instead of buying them at the box stores, im assuming we could start them from seed early.
I just use the greenhouse to start my plants from seeds in the spring. It's nice to have a place to keep all of my seed starting supplies together. In the summer it gets very hot inside the greenhouse so I haven't really used it for anything then. In the fall and winter I use it to store sunflowers and sorghum that I grow for my chickens. Thanks for watching.
Great video! I now know why my 626 keeps stalling out after driving. The teeth on my secondary clutch are shot and the belt gets pinched. Where did you purchase you secondary clutch? Thanks for sharing your video.
Thank you. I ordered mine from a place called Belt Palace but there are a lot of different places that sell it. Thanks for watching.
Good video on this
Thanks for watching.
harbor freight has some safety square rubber mats. ones like 17x4 inches and they have adhesive below. fir perfectly on the top . prevents scratches as well as makes it easier to place stuff on top
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll have to check them out.
@@shepshomestead self adhesive rubber strips. theres a 12x 12 and a 17x4. choose the latter
A video on 235 operations would be great. I inherited one. I can start and drive but some levers are difficult to figure out.
I will have to see about doing a video on the 235. Thanks for watching.
Actually I know it will operate a rear tiller but will it pull a tiller without raring up or spinning.
I have a 245 and would recommend pulling a 4’ tiller. Anything bigger could make it work to hard and overheat. Same with a bush hog…..stay with a 4’ and you’ll do fine.
Nice tractor I’m looking at a 2wd 255 do you think it would operate a rotary tiller? Also if it had 4wd where would the lever be? I have really enjoyed your videos. I want one bad.
Thank you. It is a handy tractor for sure. I've never seen a 4wd one but I imagine the lever would be near the gearshift. I've never had a rotary tiller for the tractor, nor have I ever used one. I am sure the tractor would do fine with a 4 foot one, maybe even a 5 foot. Like I said, I don't have any experience with one and don't know how well the tractor would pull a larger one. Good luck on the 255 you're looking at. Thanks for watching.
The 4Wd shift knob is just inside your left heel. Slide it ahead most times to engage. Use the clutch and your fingers if it won't.
I really like the 20v Hyper Tough stuff. I use the orbital sander, recip saw, drill, impact drive, leaf blower, lawn mower, and trimmer.
That's good to hear. I haven't tried any of their 20v stuff but I'll have to check it out.
Does yours have power steering? I'm looking at one locally that looks nice for what I need, but does not have power steering. Like yours it has no loader, and I'm hoping that would make power steering a non issue, but I'd love to hear your thoughts. My tractors with loaders will give you quite a workout when the power steering goes out lol
Does yours have power steering? I'm looking for an extra inexpensive tractor just to pull blades and other implements and found one of these locally. Looks like a great little tractor, but concerned about the lack of power steering. I'm hoping without a loader it's not really necessary. But I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!
My tractor doesn't have power steering and I don't have any issues with it being hard to steer. Mine has the wider front tires and I'm sure if you had one with the 4.00s on the front it would be even easier to steer. When I have the suitcase weights on it, it does make the front noticable harder to turn. The tractor is light enough that when you have an implement on the back, it will steer easy anyway. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
I can't find the flashlight anywhere
I've only found it online. I haven't seen it in the stores that I've been to.
Can you put a screen on that window with the auto opener.
Also, which state are you located in ? Temp zone?
Unfortunately the way the opener works you can't have a screen in the window. I live in Indiana and only use the greenhouse for starting plants in spring and early summer. Thanks for watching.
I didn’t think so but just wanted to check. I am zone 6 in Eastern WV.
Appreciate you making this video, helped me find the original from the SSLfamily and now going to design my own backyard coop off of it! thank you!!!
I have been really happy with the coop design but have made a few changes to mine. Thanks for watching.
I’m curious how much was the end harvest weight? Or if you had to guess?
Honestly I'm not sure. If I had harvested all of the sorghum I had grown, I probably would have had somewhere around a bushel of threshed grain. I didn't harvest it all so that is just a guess. Thanks for watching.
Hey shep can i get the plate numbers for the shnflowers and beans you use?
I like the IH 29 cell soybean plate for planting green beans. It is number 489111R1. There are sunflower specific plates but I don't have any. I just use large flat corn plates like a Lustran C11 or C8, depending on how long the sunflower seed is. The corn plates will usually plant heavy but I go and thin them out by hand once they start growing. Thanks for watching.
@@shepshomestead hey shop, I think my planter is missing some sort of plate that sits under the seed plate. Is there anyway you could take some pictures?
@@shawnwebster3948 Do you have the same model planter I do? I have seen some that have a solid bottom that the plate sits on. Mine is not solid and would have had another piece that the plate sit on. I am not sure what the original ones were made of. I took some thin cardboard (like from a cereal box) to make a piece that fit under the plate. It works fine and I haven't had any problems with it.
@@shepshomestead okay that sounds great! Thank you so much! Really appreciate the help
@@shawnwebster3948 Glad I could be helpful. I do plan on making a more detailed video of the planter in the near future.
Well you know something I do not no I never heard of Sorghum
Nice
Thanks for watching.
You got a score.
Thanks for watching.
I have a question about the red knobby thing sticking up in the floor about where your left foot goes. I have an AMT 622 and I believe it must be a low/high gear. Mine is locked in low and I'm guessing.
It is a differential lock. If one side loses traction and starts to spin you can push it down and it locks both sides together to give it better traction. Thanks for watching.
I appreciate it. I guess mine is stuck in 4 wheel drive then. It sounds like it's a very low gear.
Nice!
Thanks for watching.
you needed the 3/8 impact wrench?
I'd like to add that and the long ratchet to the collection.
Nice
If you like them and they get the job done for you then thars all you need
I think they are beautiful
I won't even look at 12 volt anything 20-24 volt kicks ass. Those are just too weak for any jobs lol I buy Dewalt, Milwaukee, and sometimes Ryobi if they are the only ones with a very specific tool for a good price.
Nobody cares honestly 😢
Don't sleep on 12v platforms in general. For jobs around the house or small jobs its nice having a lighter weight tool and usually more compact too.
Thats a lie they are plenty strong enough i own these and milwakuee and these are stupid good for the money
Oh so you’re that, guy. thinks he needs a 60 V drill to drive 2 inch drywall screws ETC.
@@youtubeuser5424 no one said anything about 60 volts. i use 20 volt dewalt drills to do much more than shooting screws drilling big ass holes too in metal and wood and other materials too. sometimes it takes everything that drill has and i got a dewalt DCD 998 and thats a pretty strong drill for what it is. Also use the hammer mode for drilling holes in concrete these dewalt drills last me a good while too. only had 3 dewalt drills within 20 years
I think they look great. Can you make updates how they hold up? I went for Milwaukee but the oscillating multitool went up in smoke. And I’m too just a diy.
Was it the regular or the fuel? I heard the regular multi tool is like the worst product milwuakee makes
The regular m12 multi tool is an absolute joke
@@Nicky14P it was a regular m18. But I also had a few issues with fuel products. Like a drill where the gear box seized. And now my m18 fuel grinder has some gear issues too. I’m not saying that Milwaukee is bad, I have everything from them, but it’s not Festool either.
I've been using a Fuel Milwaukee multi tool borrowed from a buddy and have really put it through its paces. No issues.
Merry Christmas Shep! I hope that you have a very restful and peaceful Christmas and a Happy New Year! 🎊🎁🎄😁😊🕛❤️💓🌸💐😗❤
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you!
Awesome greenhouse. I just bought the plants from mount liberty acres and can’t wait to start my build. What does your greenhouse look like now? Did you put gravel in the floor?
Thank you. It was a fun build. It is holding up great. I still haven't done anything to the floor but plan to in the spring. Thanks for watching.
@@shepshomestead how does it due in the winter with keeping heat?
It gets warm on a sunny day but cold at night. I haven't tried overwintering plants in it so I've never tried keeping it warm.
