It's been 8 months for me I'm 56 worked as a facilities maintenance manager for a big movie chain. I finally got interview a month ago at a another big movie chain at doing same job . Background check came back 2 weeks ago now there checking my referrals and have been only able to contact 1 of the 3 with a good reference .still waiting to see if I have the job. It's going on a month since I started process with this co. Slow is not the word. . hopefully will know soon
@bryanbond1658 holy cow...they are taking their own sweet time. Ugh!
Here is my advice for you. Try and land a job that employs mostly Gen Z. Since they rarely show up for work, that should result in long-term job security for you.
Now that sounds like a plan! 😁
CORPO GLUTTONY WOULD LAY OFF THEIR OWN MOTHERS TO MAKE 5 CENTS MORE THAN LAST QUARTER FOR THE SHAREHOARDERS!!! THIS ISNT WHAT A DEMOCRACY IS OR EVEN PROPER CAPITALISM! THIS IS EXPLOITATION!!! HOW IS THIS FIXED? MAKE ALL EMPLOYEES 'A' CLASS/1ST ROUND SHAREHOLDERS IF ITS A CORPORATION.
I just realized that as of 2025, the oldest Gen X members are 60. It won't be long until the Boomers are forgotten, unfortunately---at least as related to the US workplace. Over the next few years, Gen X will start to mean 'old and out of touch'... I read it just yesterday on a Yahoo comment about the new Starbucks CEO. He's only 50 & some snarky 20 year old was indicating that he was out of touch regarding the changes being made at Starbucks.
That is crazy about Starbucks! 😮
So sorry for how you were treated. You deserve better. Keep fighting.
@@andrewholt5659 thank you!
My husband has been laid off 2x in our 28 years of marriage and both times it was terrifying. I’ve survived about 3 rounds of layoffs in my current job that I’ve worked for almost 20 years. My husbands layoffs taught us that these companies aren’t loyal and will always prioritize their bottom line. We have a sizable emergency fund and save out of every single paycheck at least 20%. Hope for the best prepare for the worst. I hope you find work soon.
Thank you!! And yes...hope for the best and prepare for the worst!
Wait, you get laid off and are expected to work through that time!? How cruel is that? For the next two weeks you have to go into work while panicked about what is next.
Yep! I worked remotely...but yes. Looking back, I should have just stopped working the day I was laid off. But they presented it to me as a good thing in that I would get an additional 2 weeks of pay plus a severance. Needless say...I did not work very much those last 2 weeks.😉
That's why I'm leaving the US. I'm 56 and in the same boat. I hate this country
Where ya headed?
You’re on your own.
Yep
These jobs suck today!
Most women will be laid off.
Sad...
look for a city job for stability.
👍🏻
Me to
I was unemployed multiple times and twice was for ~2 years stretch each. Total ~5-6 years in my over my 30+ years career. First time, Due to health issue, I was able to get paid by my accumulated sick days then used all my PTO then unpaid leave so even though I didn’t work for 2 years, I got paid close to 8 months. When I was finally well enough to work, 9-11 and hiring freezes in NYC. So at ~32 years old, after 2 years of being unemployed, I finally found a part time job without any benefits. Luckily after 7 months, the hiring freeze was finally Lifted. I “killed” myself the next few years with the most stressful jobs to tried to replenished my wiped out savings. I also started to prepared for my next unemployment. Being a Gen X, I went through multiple black swan events like tech crash, recession and pandemic and they all affected me. So I am ready for whatever and because of my age, I know I will not be able to get a comparable job so I already have things in place for retirement. My friends forced into early retirement were ~60-63 during pandemic and know they won’t get anything decent but hope to make it to Medicare age and one needed to collect SS immediately at age 62 therefore a reduced amount. If her boyfriend didn’t help her, she will not be able to make it and Her kids can’t assist her either. the other friends are stress over the high inflation for everything last 2 years and living in FL with all the hurricanes and flooding, sharp increases in insurance plus Surfside condo collapse also cause many HOA to increase by $500 to 1000 per MONTH! There are also lots of special assessments. This has affected me too but I still have my job, they don’t. They thought once they make it to Medicare they’re good but they are now scared and wonder if their saving will last. I wish everyone the best. Always prepare because you can’t predict tomorrow. When trying to do retirement planning, I was told black swan events was once in a lifetime… really?!! explain the last 25 years to this Gen X.
Holy cow.......Yes....always prepare. This is a lesson many of us have learned the hard way. Thanks for sharing your story!
I got laid off from a corporate tech support job at 51. I knew it was coming, and I'd researched ways to start a business. As soon as I got the notice, I called a guy in Washington State who was doing a one week hand's on one-on-one training course to learn to fix dental equipment. I called him the day I got laid off and scheduled the training, and after it was over while collecting unemployment, I started my self employment business. By the time the unemployment benefits had run out, the business was sustaining itself and paying the bills. I only had to dip into my savings to pay for the training, and the business paid for that after about a year and a half. I never looked back, and just wish I'd done this earlier in life. No boss to put up with, and if a customer has a problem, you take care if it without having to consult with 'management' or kiss anyone's ass! LOL!
What a great path you took to take back control of your work life!! Thank you for sharing this!
I am sorry you are going through this. The HR person you did not recognize was likely a consultant they brought in to reduce headcount and costs for the organization. I empathize, I am in the market now and am worried.
The lesson I learned is always be prepared both financially and mentally for a layoff.
What was your position? My feeling was and is - be sure you're working directly under the head of the company. And never, ever remotely. I had a great job for 18 10:59 10:59 years but the business was fading so I quit at 52 and was lucky enough to find a young entrepreneur who knew what a very experienced employee was worth. He was utterly loyal to me and I was the same to him. Watched his business grow, helped him a lot, watched his young family grow. Retired at 66 after 14 years. He was calling me up to two years after retirement ,asking if I wanted to work for him again in any capacity! When we started to work together he was 29 and I celebrated his 50th birthday a couple of years ago. So honestly I think experience and loyalty count a lot.
I was a project manager. And you were so fortunate to find/work with the young entrepreneur.
So glad I'm not near my career money potential - I've always worked for much less than everyone else (think $75k instead $100k+), as this allows me have a lot of "me time" and not grind for that money :) I think most importantly, is your monthly bills: I can live very, VERY comfy on less than $2,000/mo (my co-workers is around $6,000/mo). As for loyalty, don't pay anyone for 3 months and then show me hands up for loyalty LOL everyone knows me at work as the guy who has 1 job: make the company money ;)
"Me time" is so important
The US has become 70% dependent on consumer spending alone to drive its economy. No longer employed in full-time jobs , w/ benefits, workers get caught between declining purchasing power and soring health care costs. Many workers additionally suffer under a global 'wage race to the bottom' as corporations seek the low cost supplier (wherever they may be off shore).
Yes...very true
2 weeks notice only. Thats crappy.
I'm also a Gen X i can recall all of that...nostalgy
I’m a gen x at 48 and hearing this scares me. I’m going back to school to get a trade degree. I’ve been told by people that I don’t look my age and look like I’m in my early 30s and late 20s but sooner or later the wrinkles and gray hair will come up and nobody can control that. At least if I’m cornered with no job, I can use my trade in welding or plumbing or even carpentry to start a business and take that where ever I go. People retire but I’ve heard stories about people who retire and they don’t know how to cope with day to day anxiety of the country’s cost of living and inflation. People who retire will often die after five or 10 years of not having anything to do. So, I am very skeptical about saving money to retire because what does that even mean anymore?
@@sarrjel retirement is very subjective these days...that's for sure
It's not you. It's not your age. It's the industry. The pendulum (job market) will swing one way-then another. It took me years to figure that one out. AI is hot, hot, hot. Jump on it. Learn it, if it is not in your current skill set. Amazon is moving fast in that direction. Apply there. You have nothing to lose.
Thanks!
Somebody once told me that when you get into your fifties, companies will look for any reason to push you out the door.
That person knew what was going on....
Find a PASSION of yours and monetize if possible.. Easier said then done, however live your LIFE on your terms
That is the goal!😀
Younger managers and co-workers do not want to look at you when you are older.
Yep, that seems to be what we are all seeing.
Same with my wife. She was a hard working "wonder manager" at JC Penney for 23 years. Getting promotions, bonuses moved around the country with all expenses paid etc. Until... she hit age 53. From that point on, according to the company she turned 180 degrees the total opposite. All of a sudden she could never do anything right. Of course, the circumstance that she was one of the very last ones with a company pension plan that gave her the option to take early retirement at age 55 couldn't have had a role in it at all, I suppose. (sic) She got ousted. $18K+ later for a higher rate employment lawyer and after many dirty legal tricks played by the corporate lawyers, she "got a deal". Only to wait two more years and see JC Penney to go bankrupt and her "deal" nullified in bankruptcy courts. No pension, NOTHING but her 401k and even that badly damaged. All this might be technically "LEGAL" but to me it sure seems practically "CRIMINAL". Nobody can ever give her (and me) back those 23 years sacrificed! Sickening.
Oh my gosh! That is sickening!
The career counseling I had in college was garbage, totally clueless about the corporate recruting process. At least you didnt wast time listening to them.
Ha!! Thanks!
Ugh...what a raw and honest video. Fortunately I have never been laid off but this video made me realize that I/we have only so many pay checks coming our ways. I am 50 years old now and hitting my peak earning year(s) but your video has a way of bringing me down to earth and pump the breaks on life style inflation. Thank you and when you do find a new job, I hope you will continue to post videos.
Thank you for your kind words!
Ahh man. I'm 50 making decent money ha e 20 yrs experience licensed in 2 states. Yeah I've been at new job less than a year and have seen 3 people get laid off. A 59 yr. Old went out for medical reasons and they gave me his projects. He's gone.... dont think he's coming back. Hope im not next. .y plan is get a 2nd job save money to go out on my own venture. We will see. Hope my job lasts another year or 2 is all I need.
Thanks for sharing!
Giving YOU two weeks notice rubs me the wrong way. How about letting you go immediately and paying you the next two weeks followed by severance. When I got the call , was told to shut down my work computer by noon and I’m done. That was fine with me.
Yea, looking back...that was very strange and rubs me the wring way as well.
I lost my 30 year job at right around 50. Tried getting retrained, twice, and nothing worked out. I think ageism is a real issue, but companies can easily get away with it, as there are no teeth in the age discrimination in employment laws. So I took part time jobs, sometimes off and on, and sometimes 2 and 3 at a time, and lived off that and my savings until I got on Social Security. This was from 2004-2018.
Thank you for sharing. It is all so wrong.
I'm still working in my mid sixties but about 10 years ago I was laid off due to downsizing. Don't let anybody tell you different but there is big time age discrimination in the job market. Found out companies don't want to pay you the upper range because of experience, so they'll settle for the younger and inexperienced. Eventually after several months of diligently searching, I landed on a job where experience did matter and now making nearly twice what used to make. I plan on retiring in the next 2-3 years and hopefully be debt free. But no matter who you or how old you are, my advice is to sock some money away to hold you over for at least 6-12 months while looking for that other job. Losing your job can really suck ...but can also be a blessing in disguise.
Thank you!
It happened to me at 61. I was terrified, but I was only unemployed for nine days. I plan on working until at least 70.
I would tell myself to move out sooner and far away from home. I come from an enmeshed family. I would also tell myself to avoid credit card debt, not put so much importance on material things, not lament over rejections as you said (so much mental energy wasted), to get and stay fit sooner (dealing with health issues now because of being obese most of my adult life), and to have more self love.
Those are all excellent and I agree with all of them! Thank you so much for sharing!💜
I’m the tail end of baby boomers. My first job in 1982 was Hardee’s. This is a fun video, fun to see the comments.
Nice! I forgot about Hardee's!💜
Praying for you ❤😢. Im so sorry. Ageism is alive and well. I am 57 , i experience it at my job.
Thank you!

What is this gorgeous song in your background ? ❤💞♥️
It is some royalty free instrumental that I downloaded
Great channel!
Thank you!
A lot of people are very big and bad behind their keyboard. It is sad that so many people like to mouth off and be mean when they are faceless. I wonder what it is that makes some people become nasty when they are anonymous. It is all very strange to me.
The couple that send love notes via FB posts are so annoying! I always think they are probably sitting right next to each other and on their phones sending these posts to each other.
@gracejones2831 yes!! I think the same!😁
Noelle loved this, beautiful storytelling I listened to this while driving, loved it all. I’m with the other comment ‘wait- Physical??? Nooooo😅😅😅😅’ learn something new every day 😂😂😂😂

I don’t understand why you worked 2 weeks after getting laid off. I got laid off and I was out the door in45 mins
It was strange. They gave a few of us 2 weeks notice. It was 2 weeks more of pay plus a severance.
I loath agism. Glad I am retired.
💜
I was laid off at 58. When I took my CV in to the Unemployment Office my case worker told me to start my own company. They had nothing else for me. So I took my unemployment and used that time and $$ to start my own LLC. Ageism is real.
Thanks for sharing! Why type of company do you own?
Unfortunately after 50, if you don’t have great connections you’ll have to settle for a paycut and work two jobs to make ends meet. Reason why I’m saving, investing and putting a lot now into my 401k in case this happens to me in my 50s. I’ve been laid off 3 times already and every time it’s a scary situation.
Yep...that is what I have been hearing over and over.
57 here. Ive been laid off 5 times- it’s the career I fell into. Got wise to the corporate BS years ago and would always look for a new job after starting one. Ageism is real. 50 is the new 80. Found my own business and I wish I’d left the corporate world decades ago. Your time is coming. Be patient and prepared..
Thanks for sharing!!
This is me too!
