    Hello, is it safe to clean the lenses on the NL pure with Zeiss wipes? I’ve read things about not using wipes with alcohol and the Zeiss smells like alcohol, but I’m not sure. Thanks.

      @Optics4birding 11 днів тому

      Most lens cleaning solutions are made with alcohol and are safe to use on binoculars. The ZEISS wipes are safe to use on the NL Pure lenses. Just try not to get the solution on the housing or armor and keep it on the glass.

    Great video and as a wearer of eyeglasses eye relief is the number one spec I check. It would have been good if you were able to discus usable eye relief as well. I need about 15 mm of usable eye relief and I've found that unless the listed eye relief is over 20 mm I really need to know the distance from the lens to the eye cup rim to get the usable eye relief. Example, the Zeiss Terra EDs and Vortex Vipers 8x42 both list 18 mm of eye relief however the Vipers have over 4 mm of eye cup above the lens while the Terras have about 2 mm. So while they are both listed at 18 mm of eye relief, the Terra has about 16 mm of usable and the Viper has about 14 mm and only the Terra is usable for me. I've found this really limits what binos will work for me :(

    • @Optics4birding
      @Optics4birding 24 дні тому

      The Noctivid is amazing. Incredibly sharp image, vivid colors and phenomenal build quality, but the Victory SF has a superior focus mechanism and feels much lighter when you hold it up to your eyes, making it easier to use for longer viewing sessions. They both have the nicest image quality money can buy, but the Victory SF certainly wins on ergonomics in our view.

  • @vasantrajan8716
    @vasantrajan8716 26 днів тому

    A nice overview which finally says it is your personal taste. Ok. But you are mum on the one hand holding capacity in the Zeiss, + the bridge, i mean), which is staring at you from the beginning. Any views on that. I cidentally Noctivid also has this feature. Thanks.

    • @Optics4birding
      @Optics4birding 26 днів тому

      They can both be very comfortable to hold with one hand. Which one is better for one-handed use depends on whose hand is holding it. Some prefer the open bridge design on the ZEISS Victory SF and Leica Noctivid (as well as the Swarovski EL and others) while some like the trimmed down shape of the NL Pure. Other than personal preference, we've seen that, in general, smaller hands have an easier time with the NL Pure because there is less to grab while some with larger hands prefer the Victory SF because their hands don't feel as cluttered. But this is not universal law--we've seen it the opposite way as well. Always best to handle them yourself if you can!

    A binocular for a hardcore birder needs to be very rugged, it needs to be in very good balance and it needs to be easy to use, I have the old, but excellent Leitz Trinovid 8x32 BA and 10x40 BA which I most use at home because I want to keep them for many years, I have broken one Leitz Trinovid 10x40 BA/N. My other two binoculars which I use in the field are the excellent Leica Ultravid 8x32 and 12x50.

    I own both the ATX and BTX. The BTX is definetely the better choice. Not only is it more relaxed viewing, but also sharper and clearer. I have taken hundreds of pictures through them with my phone: The BTX is sharper. Maybe due to less glass compared to the zoom eyepiece? Anyway both are great! I love watching the moon, Saturn, Jupiter, Pleiades etc with the BTX and the 115 mm objective 🤩

    I really appreciated this so much. I never thought about the importance of the exit pupil! Awesome education and video. Now, do you discuss the interpupillary distance in a video somewhere? I have a very narrow set of eyes and am having so much trouble finding binoculars that work. My pupillary distance is 53.5mm, just under the narrowest range on most binoculars, the 54mm. What bins would work well for me? Like the Zeiss Victory SF 10x32 did not work. I've been using very old Nikon Monarchs 10x42 that worked for years until the low end of their pupillary distance did not work on newer versions of the same bins. (Before that, I'd used Nikon Monarch 8x42.)

      WOW! Not sure if you have a crystal ball or just great timing. We're going to publish a video about interpupillary distance and eye relief in just a few days! Stay tuned. If your IPD is 53.5 mm, our #1 recommendation by far is the ZEISS SFL! Both the 8x40 and 10x40 models have a minimum IPD of 52 mm. We had one customer with a 53 mm IPD use the 8x40 with no issues, so they should work for you as well. Hope this helps!

      The Opticron Oregon 8x42’s, which are a great value for the money. I bought based on the Cornell bird lab’s review. By the way, I noticed your not carrying the Opticron’s anymore. Why is this? I purchased a pair of Kowa BDII 8x42’s on sale, and they’re clearer and brighter than the Oregons. They’re also more compact and lighter than the Oregons, but the eye relief isn’t as generous. I’m now considering buying a pair of Kowa Genesis 8x33’s. Cheers!

    Thanks for the video. I was in the luxury position to choose between the two (I prefer 8x above 10x though). It was difficult to choose as they are both top, but in the end I chose the Zeiss, because of closer focus (a must if you also watch dragonflies and buttefiles), less weight and the focus wheel of the Zeiss felt better. I did not see any significant differences in optics, though I made the choise during a gloomy, rainy December day, also the broader field of view in the Swaro did not made me choose for it. Finally a customer made me make my final decision towards Zeiss. He siad that his wife had a Swaro and when something was wrong with it, Swarovski had great service. Then I remembered that phrase from my fellow birders "Great service by Swarowski!"" more often than not. As my previous binocular was a Zeiss 8x42 FL from 2004 I cannot recall how the service is by Zeiss. Because I never ever needed service by Zeiss!

      You are right in what you say... optically, i always preferred the zeiss conquest to the flagship victorys. And at every event where there was a optics marquee, I could never convince myself that any of the top brands 'flagships' were worth upgrading to (and believe me I wanted to because the conquests felt really cheap, because of their super cheap eyecups, which always made me sad every time i used them).... then last year I came across the NL pure and everything just fell into place, ergonomics, field of view and image quality together with that 'flagship' feel to them, I resisted the impulse to buy them right there (proud of myself) but I knew sooner or later that the money for that hefty price tag was gonna burn a hole right through my pocket. So when you say you were not that impressed I totally get it... I've been there, but kind of the other way round.

      @@Optics4birding thanks. 10x42 looks too much of my 8x42 in guess. I think 10x30 SFL will be ok. I use it for daytime only. (I use my 8x42 for low light conditions). 12x42 is another heavy (and expensive) bino and maybe too shakey and too much mag . But i guess i have to try before i buy. Thanks

    Hahaha i love how the guy says these are ideal as they're under 2k & ideal for someone not looking for an Alpha binocular!! In my book those are Alpha binoculars for god's sake!

    I’ve got a pair of EL 8.5x42 for a few years (love it) and recently got myself a pair of SFL 8x30. I live in ranthambhore (India) so when I am photographing big cats, it’s easier to carry the zeiss along with my camera kit. When I am birding with my son, tend to use the swaro as the EL is sharper and gives more satisfaction with identification and closer viewing. The zeiss though is amazing for its size and weight, great piece of optics.

    Hey, low light performance nl 14x52 vs slc 15x56- what is the better bino? On paper the slc is the winner, but would love to hear about a real world comparison.

    The fact is if the SFL's said 'made in Germany' somewhere on them it would be a surer buy. But with these 2nd tier Zeiss's being put together in Japan it keeps people on the fence about it. Including me.

      @mmulvill 3 місяці тому

      Jump off the fence. I have a pair of 8X40 SFLs for the last couple of months, and am very satisfied with them. Probably one of the best attributes are the size and weight. Much more pocketable than my Noctivids. Sometimes it's okay to drive a Honda instead of a Porsche.

      ZEISS Made in Japan is nothing to worry about. Servicing binoculars is my job. I've seen them all, I've tried them all out, I've seen just about all that can go wrong with them. We have no more trouble with the Japan models than we have with the Germany models. And in North America ZEISS gives you a "limited lifetime" warranty on the optical system for everything but the Terra line. Plus, if you register your binos with them, that protects you against the cost of fixing accidental damage during the first 5 years after you buy them - you drop them and something important breaks, they will fix it or get you a refurbished replacement optic for free. Be aware of the word "limited" though - if you're using your binos a lot, your focus knob may need maintenance, or your armor may wear out, or someone may use a dirty rag to clean the lenses, taking their coatings off. That's wear and tear, and wear and tear is not covered! That may seem harsh when you get the bill, but all the binocular manufacturers are businesses in the end. They can't exist without some profit. I'd be more worried if a manufacturer offered you a new optic anytime something is wrong with your old one, because that can only be a valid business model as long as they can make their binoculars really cheaply.

      @@fmbga Free repair on droppage? I had to pay Swarovski £100 after my NL's took a fall only 2 months after I got them. The left objective lens fogged up from the inside. Sorted now. I also have some Swarovski CL's purchased after Christmas and the focus wheel has started to stiffen already. I'm expecting that repair to be done gratis though. If not, I might look at Zeiss.

    I'm glad you brought up the point of how far your eyes are located on a person's face I tried both the Zeiss sfl 10 x 42 and the Swarovski NL pure 10 x 42 which I found the Zeiss sfl a better glass for my face which I have now purchased. For 9 out of 10 people will prefer NL pure 10 x 42 but for me I can see the space between both lenses know matter how close I push the lenses together. It's unfortunate but what can I do.

    For the price it costs it should come with a Dwarf assist that would pop out of the case and set it up for you. Only someone with expendable millionaire money should consider purchasing this. Anyone putting this on the credit card is a moron, because by the time you finish paying for it, it'll cost you double. Such foolishness.

    Why did you exclude the Leica Noctovid from your review?

    • @Optics4birding
      @Optics4birding 3 місяці тому

      Thanks for asking; we know somebody would! The Noctivid is unquestionably one of the best binoculars we carry. It has an absolutely gorgeous view, but the ergonomics simply fall short for us and the majority of our customers. They are heavier and lack the ergonomic grip and smooth focus wheel that the SF and NL have, and when you're spending $3K+ it makes sense to have the best ergonomics AND the best image quality. We have all three in our store, and these two drastically outsell the Noctivid because of the ergonomics. That said, as we've tried to emphasize in all of our videos, binoculars are extremely personal, and there are plenty of folks who choose the Noctivid. We release these videos based on what our audience wants to see most, and these two binoculars are simply more popular and got their own video. We may do another one with the Noctivid someday!

    Interesting feature in the forehead rest... As an eyeglass wearer I've recently found myself pressing my thumb tips against my face, below my eyes, to achieve a steadier hold. Sort of happend on accident the first time but now I'm actively using the technique.

      Great advice! We also like the "brim of the hat" trick where you latch onto the front of your hat with your middle fingers, allowing your index fingers to stay on the focus wheel. But your version definitely wins if you leave your hat at home!

    Is there a difference between using the BTX + 1.7 doubler, comparing with the ATX - both at 60 x power? I mean: is the image a littlebit darker because of the 1.7 doubler or is there no difference at all?

    • @Optics4birding
      @Optics4birding 3 місяці тому

      Great question! Technically yes, the 1.7x extender decreases the overall light transmission by introducing extra lenses, but it isn't drastic. It gets tough to compare the brightness because you're looking through the ATX with one eye and the BTX with two eyes. The ATX is brighter, but having both eyes open can make your brain think the BTX appears brighter. Hope this helps!
