Everything trains, from N and O scale to the real thing!
Menards Freight - O Scale Trains on a Budget
I just got a batch of Menards freight cars in to try them out. For $25 each they’re a decent way to start or expand your o scale empire, but they are not without fault. The wheels don’t always roll well in cars with plastic trucks, however ones with metal trucks do once lubricated. So far I’ve only found their boxcars to have metal trucks and couplers, so I’ll probably buy more of those in the future.
Edit - After running these cars more, I noticed my engines working harder when I add them to the train. They have more drag than similar ones from other brands, even after lubricating the axles. While they are inexpensive for new cars, I personally would rather buy older cars in good condition that can be found for around the same price, if not cheaper.

How to Maintain N Scale Cars and Locomotives
Переглядів 8553 роки тому
In this video I demonstrate basic maintenance of N scale cars and locomotives. Most railcars need only their wheels cleaned. The Amtrak Amfleet cars are a special case as they have inside bearing trucks that are a high-friction area and require an occasional drop of oil. Basic locomotive maintenance is simple, a wheel cleaning and a few drops of oil will do. Items used: Woodland Scenics Roto Wh...
How to Ballast Kato Unitrack
Переглядів 3,1 тис.3 роки тому
In this video I demonstrate one of many ways to ballast Kato track. I forgot to mention that you need to clean the rails after gluing down the ballast in the way that I show. After the glue dries, run a track scrubber or your fingernail along the top of the rails, either will do the trick. Lot of money invested there. Buying the P42 loco and 3 cars intercity viewliner set, along with a baggage car. Like how your baggage car is lit up.
N scale Amtrak train running in the layout. I haved my Amtrak locomotive in N scale. Amtrak Bi-nivel passengers cars. Kato N scale Amtrak passengers train set. P42 Amtrak locomotive. 3 Amtrak bi-nivel passengers cars.
Kato 11-212 lighting kits have changed, so this video is outdated I believe.
Where do u buy all those passenger cars
Cleaning the wheels of the passengers cars and locomotives . I gonna clean the wheels to my Amtrak passengers cars.
Nice layout in N scale. Amtrak passengers train. Kato tracks and switch. Good luck with you layout my friend. I have Amtrak bi-nivel passengers cars Kato.
Ballasting Kato unitracks in N scale layout. Good job my friend. In my layout installed Atlas and Bachmann tracks, fixed with nails. Code 80.
BNSF🚂 Making great destinations!
Cool 😊
Installing kit of LED lights in passengers cars Amtrak.
Compré unos vagones de pasajeros Amtrak bi-nivel Kato escala, y le quiero poner luces LED. Fácilmente.
Smok
I just did this on a different train . That light diffuser has slots in it that fit onto the posts of the interior . A slight press and it stays nice and secure . At least on the train I did
Yo compré unos vagones de pasajeros Amtrak bi-nivel Kato, y le voy a poner luces LED. Son 3. Los instalare fácilmente, con el kit de luces LED marca Kato.
Not meaning to be rude, but I see that one end of the car is a good bit brighter than the other. I had this happen as well. I turned the light pipe (Diffuser) the other way around and in some cases, glued it in to place. I get much better and more even lighting now. These little kits are finicky and delicate... and the light pipes arent long enough, so many times, light doesnt make it to the other end of the car. I expected better from Kato. But hey, they're still really cool.
Yeah, I’m guessing the diffusers are shorter to fit more types of cars. Glad that works, maybe I’ll try it when I have more to light
Nice runby. Thanks for sharing. Dave
a really nice train. Thank you for sharing. Bernhard 🕊️🤠👍

Are both locomotives DCC able to be controlled separately?
No that's DC they are using
Can you make a toturial on how to make a small snow diorama i have got the kato 2 snowplox cars
Great Video. I love Amtrak and Kato N Scale. Greetings from Zurich Switzerland
I can’t wait to add more ALC 42 charges to my collection. So far I have 300. The first of its kind built. Do an instructional video on how to install the lighting kit. It takes an 11-211 or 11-212 lighting kit.
Love it!
I really want to start collecting amtrak locomotives, I love the p42. I think growing up watching "there goes a train" has a lot to do with it.
Kato are the best.
"He's back!!!"
The new engine looks and runs very well. Thank you for sharing. Have a nice day. 🕊🤠👍
Thanks for watching! Kato’s models are always so impressive with their quality and level of detail. Have a nice day!
@@empirebuilder28 You're right, I also use a lot of Kato models and I love them.

I love the sound of the motor cuz it’s small and idk why I love it
No new videos??
Can't wait to see it completed. Cool video
Does it light entire amfleet?
What pen isit ?
It's the Woodland Scenics track painter.
WHAT BALLAST DID YOU USE? do'h i just read the description it's ok
I like your intro, Do you live in Whitefish?
Thanks! I don't, I was there on vacation
Are you going to customize your p42dc into 50th anniversary heritage units?
Have you ever tried repainting your Kato p42dc and customize in to Amtrak's 50th anniversary heritage units because that would be great to see
No, but that would be cool! Kato is coming out with Amtrak #46 in its 50th anniversary scheme. I’m hoping they’ll be making the other anniversary units soon!

Couple of questions: What is the purpose of the masking tape along the main lines before ballasting? I have seen many use full strength glue along the plastic edge for the first layer to adhere. I can see using masking tape at the turnout to protect it. But there you then used full strength glue? Also is not best to prewet the ballast before gluing? For glue did you simply use Woodland Scenics cement?
The masking tape is to shore up gaps between the plastic track bed and the terrain, and to easily fill holes in the terrain. It's so that the ballast doesn't just endlessly fall into the sub terrain. I've since then been using lightweight spackle to fill these gaps. You can use Elmer's glue for the first layer of ballast, I just like to be able to shape the pile better before getting any glue involved. You can pre-wet the ballast to break the surface tension and allow the glue to flow better. I've seen ballasting done both with and without pre-wetting, I didn't find it necessary because I try not to let the glue drops out too fast, and I keep my dropper as close to the ballast as possible -preventing the ballast from 'splashing.' And yes, I use Woodlands Scenics' Scenic Cement glue.
i have a feline supervisor as well. nice running and a cool channel!
very nice amtrak. nice track plan- made for runnin it seems :)
Very nice set and layout! What’s the radius of the double track curves?
Thanks! The larger curve is 17/18” and the rest are 11/12”
@@empirebuilder28 Thank you!
@@centralcaliforniarail Sure thing!
Cabin looks amazing. Very well done. 🤠👍
Thanks!
Great run session, your layout is looking good.
Thank you!
Are baggage cars typically lit in real life? I don't see enough Amtrak at night to know!
They are. I wasn’t sure myself when I first put the kits in my baggage cars, but I figured the more lights the better!
Very nice! Thanks! We'll have to give ours another go!
Thanks, I remember watching your lighting video before getting my kits! It’s definitely worth another try. It took me a while to get everything in the right spot, but they look great once you find the exact position they need to be in.
Cool! What lighting are you using in the trailing cars? It looks better than Kato’s lighting kit or maybe you did something to make Kato lighting kit better?
Thanks! They’re the Kato kits without the amber filter, I just make sure the diffuser is up against the LED so light is evenly distributed. Besides a piece of electrical tape around the housing to keep the contacts from jostling loose the kits are unaltered. I have a video explaining the process if you’re interested.
@@empirebuilder28 Cool! Yeah, can you link that video here, please?
@@minnesotaeerailroad8471 Sure, here you go! ua-cam.com/video/op9pU8iRcNE/v-deo.html
@@empirebuilder28 Ha! I was watching it when you sent this! Thanks!
@@minnesotaeerailroad8471 Haha, no problem!
Awesome cars. I never saw the lights flicker a single time. Do the cars have capacitors (stay alive) for constant lighting or is your track work that perfect ? Nice video. Cool music too. 👍👍🛤
Thanks! No capacitors, just a couple tricks to keep them lit. I have a small strip of electrical tape around the light housing and mount to keep the contacts from working loose (I have a video that demonstrates this). I also have feeders about every 3 feet to ensure a consistent flow of electricity. But ultimately I think it's Kato's solid track that keeps them from flickering.
At 2:03 you will see the lights flicker off on that last car.
@@JERRYR708 Amazing catch !!!!! You have good eyes !!!! 🤤🤤🤤
