i2c / ii: basic physical connection walkthrough
Переглядів 1,1 тис.5 місяців тому
i2c, or ii, is a flexible communication protocol which allows certain modules from manufacturers like Whimsical Raps and monome to send commands to each other digitally, which opens up possibilities that 3.5mm patch cables can’t facilitate. Though connecting i2c headers is pretty straightforward for the confident user, first-timers may feel uncertain about the process. This video demonstrates t...

The performance at the beginning takes a long time to get going. Jump to 18:00 to hear it go somewhere musical unless you're a completionist. We primarily talk about the 'fnl' function i built for the performance, and explore the many ways it can be used to chain behaviour over time. There's another 'music' section (with narration) at 1:28:00. Here's the gist for those who want to study the scr...

Capture of the twitch stream from 9/3. Stumbling through the creation of a new lua library for arranging sequences of values. It's primarily intended for writing melodies and arpeggios in a way that inherently allows arbitrarily complex structures. That means you can write a simple arpeggio, easily, but also have multiple arpeggios that alternate, or interleave, or phase in fun ways. Get the de...
Maps w/ Trent: Designing with a timeframe

Capture of the twitch stream from 8/20. An exercise in the generation of ideas. I start by zipping through a brief 15 minute design - some kind of gameified synthesizer with a rapid performative interface inspired by the Super Nintendo controller. The body of the stream goes on to explore the potential of a Eurorack mixer design. Lots of questions and discussion of working with constraints, and...
Maps w/ Trent: Music in the time of Asynchronous Functional Programming

Capture of the twitch stream from 7/23. Without a real plan for the stream, it ended up being an exploration of crow scripting with the forthcoming `clock` library (borrowed from norns). I use some functional programming techniques along with the (asynchronous) clock library to write a small script that makes a surprising amount of sound & movement. First section runs through creating an arpegg...

Maps w/ Trent: Musical Modulations in ASL
you are a goddamn genius
Very cool. Too bad it costs an arm and a leg to import to Europe since they switched to direct sales only, if you can snatch one, that is.
i'm so proud of you dude! your approach to utilities is so inventive and sparks curiosity while patching i can imagine things i'll do with one of these but more excited by paths i'll stumble upon mid patch...another excellent design 🐸
Dayum- That is one heck of a demo!
you didn’t make enough ❤ does it i2c?
we'll find out about *enough* on the 30th... no i2c on this one - wanted to go for something more analogue feeling.
Awesome I’ll definitely be sending you some more of my cash
I love it sir!
okay this seems lovely ... but is the "in two planes" referring to front-back and left-right? because that's two axes ... which a single plane already has? that's one plane
Cool!! I like the little pentagonal light thing, nice touch.
i spit out my tea when he kept twisting the knob & it just kept turning
🤤
Wow. Just Wow.
So cool, Trent. What a worthy addition to an iconic lineup. 👏
Just watched again. This is absolutely incredible. What a demo. Could get lost in this for hours.
Yes very snice but e-maild a couple of times a years ago for me and a friend order just no response :/
Worst company I’ve dealt with
Hexagons are the bestagons. Lovely demo patches. Wouldn't mind a silver and black crow panel myself :P
i DIY'd the silver&black crow panel! tape a piece of sandpaper to a flat surface, remove the faceplate (just 2 phillips screws), and start sanding. something like 400grit leaves a nice subtle grain :)
Bravo!
Another quirky exploratory groaning and creaking scream queen from the best eurorack craftsman in town 👏🏽 ❤
Never heard anything quite like it.
reminds me a lot of what I do with RxMx and Clouds. RxMx was a great module. Nice to see some variation on that idea. And great that a CV-delay is integrated here. Very inspiring and creative approach, congratz!
Now this is how you innovate in instrument design. Completely novel stuff, as with other Mannequins modules. Feels like you are picking up the mantle of Mutable Instruments with this design. Gives some of that OG Clouds vibe.
I dunno about that
A design can be good even if it's a bit derivative :) it's not completely novel, but the addition and tweaks of existing concepts give something certainly unique here!
amazing
Silver/Black Crow 😍😍😍
Included with every Silhouette 😉
insane
🔥🔥🔥
Sounds dope!
Very cool
Beautiful!!
Dec 2025?
i hope this is typo 😂
So, is it available next Dec.?
mr burns voice -> EXCELLENT... have a happy end of the year sir ✌🧡
Terribly curious to know more about the way you approach the design of this instrument!
Stoked.
Merry solstice 🎄
Very excited for this just ordered
When is the next episode coming?
the entire series should be wrapped by the end of the year :)
@@soundandprocesscool!! Great job!
Learned so much
You guys should bring back this 4u case for another run
Wow, the end of this video was magic - the fade-out and the arpeggios. Thanks for the inspiration!
Dear Trent, will you do a Maps w/ Trent about the new W/ ?
This is fantastic; thank you so much for helping us all understand this module better. I wonder if you might be open to one small bit of constructive criticism: The stuff you are doing with crow and Just Friends is going to be pretty opaque for anyone who isn't already very familiar with the WR/monome ecosystem, and maybe even a few people (👋) who are... Maybe you could include lengthier, timestamped explanations of what these modules are doing in the video description? Just thinking about how to make this awesome module accessible to even more people. Thanks again!!
thank you for checking it out + for your thoughtful feedback! that definitely makes sense -- we've posted the two crow scripts to GitHub (gist.github.com/dndrks/e5ec1f6af0cf1477953cf6f61dbd9b7b and gist.github.com/dndrks/48affab46f87bcebac252bb17393db77 ) in the meantime, which hopefully helps clarify a bit!
Is this part of a bigger series on the I²C protocol or just instructions on how to connect these cards? What are they btw?
thank you for the question! this video is simply standalone instruction on connecting eurorack modules for digital communication via i2c. these modules are crow (the black one) and w/, which are designed by monome and Whimsical Raps. we recognize that making a video showing how to connect three cables is silly, but we've received so many emails over the years from folks who are trepidatious about the physical connection, so we thought this would help :)
What a horrible explanation
oh! very sorry to hear this -- this video was designed to address the most common denominator questions, which are often about the physical connections (how to daisy chain, pin order, etc). what would be a good follow-up to ensure your questions are answered?
What a horrible comment =) It's probably meant for people who are not familiar with the protocol yet (eurorackers wondering why and how to make the modules talk, something they may have read about in the documentation. Some people apparently learn from video only, and don't reach for written docs. Addressing leader/follower, data (SDA) and clock (SCL) lines and such may already be a bit technical for some... And the video would become much longer...
How is this horrible? Do you even i2c? /s
What th are you connecting? And what for?
i2c allows modules to communicate behind-the-panel, which opens up functionality that patch cables and control voltage cannot access. these modules are crow (from monome) and w/ (from Whimsical Raps) -- they can communicate with each other digitally over i2c, when their headers are connected as shown in the video. here's a demonstration of i2c communication between these two modules: ua-cam.com/video/2RUHr-iX1VE/v-deo.htmlsi=2QAobYAWHZlFYKym&t=1174 please let us know if you have any additional questions!
Thats awesome . Thanks for doing this . I can‘t wait for more Input
This module had a very high learning curve for me... but boy was it worth it. I have 2 and they are sooo useful and fun when you don't have to continually check the manual!
i’ve been toying with the idea of getting another one for a pair. is there a way to connect the two? using it like a stereo sampler?
@@an_outskirt292 I don't think so? but boy would that be amazing..
Awesome to finally have a tutorial video for the latest FW. Very dense material ... I guess I'll have to watch it a few times :)
Thank you
Awesome to see more content! :D
I really appreciate this kind of videos. I have your modules since I started in eurorack, and they are my favorite ones!
awesome, I really needed that walkthrough! Please consider a guide for chaining multiple w/'s on a crow.
This is very helpful - thanks! Nice to see the actual button presses etc in real time - clears some things up for me.
