    Lads, I rarely comment on anything, but Jay would be fecking proud of ye! I once met him on a gig in my northern German hometown many years ago. 'Twas a blast and magic moment. I'm living in Ireland now, but every day I listen to this one particular song at least once. Today I came across your version. Keep it up. You're bleedin' deadly! All the best from Dub. Yours Jess

      Bro this is probably the best you're going to get in terms of "tab", or any real method of properly playing this song. I've been looking online forever just to find a video of Jay playing this song in a way where his playing is somewhat visible, and this no lie has been the best reference video I've found in the year of looking for something. The whole thing is just bar chords, and power chords. Honestly not too hard to replicate, and it'll be really good for training your ears, and practicing.

    I'm actually really loving this album. I think I've currently got a similar outlook on the world so maybe I feel like its really speaking to me, but I am also a fan of his previous albums. Good review though, I think you hit the nail on the head and he does definitely come across as a massive narcissist (just watch any interview with him). Liked & subbed.

    Great review. Songs all feel the same to me and are mostly a vehicle for dragged on cynical divagations that are not particularly smart. It's boring and pretentious. Too bad cause I really really like his previous album.

    yea, you got it wrong. The whole purpose of the album is that its not one group its all of us that were doomed from the beginning. "our brains are way too big for our mothers' hips" is about how we are born already behind the 8-ball. You have to understand he is talking about himself in Ballad of the Dying Man and The Memo. We aren't supposed to solve the problems just be happy to be alive. "in no time at all this will be the distant past"

      +royce87 Thanks for commenting royce! To me your comment as well as the other two folk's comments before reinforce my arguments made in the video. All three of you assume that because I don't like it, I somehow didn't "get it". I'm saying there's not much to get when it comes to the record / Tillman's essay, you summed it up pretty well with a couple sentences, it's a pretty simple theme / concept (Not subject matter though). It's the sort of thought process that I argued this album, once it's flaws are taken into account, appeals to. My issue with the album, (which I thought I made clear in the video but I realize now I did not, sorry! Still learning here) isn't with the theme, it's with the execution. The music to me is simply not as strong creatively as it had been on his previous records. Multiple times throughout the album Tillman can't help but be reductive, dismissive, or even smug with his narration, which I think weakens the narrator's intended position of objective observer. Once that is in place, as I summarized in the vid, the album is left to appeal to folks who want their already formed opinions and prejudices reinforced, rather than serving as a convincing argument for his position on what our collective outlook should be. Because of that, no matter how much I might agree with the sentiment / theme of the record, I'm just not interested in patting myself on the back for agreeing with FJM on this one, or participating in the ensuing intellectual circlejerk.

      Fair enough. I just don't think its scattershot as you think it is. I don't think hes trying to get us on the side of anything, or even cares if we agree with him. If anything, the us vs them nature of life is a waste of time and there really is no way to win. It took me a couple of listens to get everything he was saying. The same way "The Night Josh Tillman Came To..." seems like its ripping this valley girl, but its really about how he couldnt get it up so he is lashing out at her. "things that would have been..." isnt about how corporations take advantage of us, its also about how we would miss it and find ways to recreate it at the first opportunity. But hey, thats what opinions are for..

    Did you get it wrong? Well..I presume.. this sh!t is certainly crafted to fly beyond few bobbing heads.

    • @Radcompanymusic
      @Radcompanymusic 7 років тому

      Haha Hey man! Thanks for watching. To me, your response sort of exemplifies my criticism of it. I agree that it's crafted to fly "beyond few bobbing heads" but I don't think it's successful. Instead it serves to allow people to pat themselves on the back for sharing the view point of the record (Which I've mentioned multiple times now that I do) and for "getting it", when really there's not much there to chew on. And of the material that is there, in my opinion, it's presented in a way that hamstrings what it sets out to do which as you said was to "fly beyond few bobbing heads."

    its a concept album, maybe try familiarizing yourself with the concept.

    • @Radcompanymusic
      @Radcompanymusic 7 років тому

      Hey!! Thanks for taking the time. I am familiar with the ‘concept’, though I don’t think I’d call the record a concept album. Even if the essay wasn’t read or the short film wasn’t watched by someone listening to this, it’s pretty easy to grasp on a listen or two to this thing. To me, even if we call it a concept album, in the context of the themes expressed in the album and in the pretty on-the-nose essay, I feel that my criticisms still stand. Like I said in the video, I agree with his sentiment for the most part; when it comes to the 'concept' I agree with it/him. But I don't dig on how he's presenting it (with in my opinion, lazier songwriting than we've seen in the past from him) or narrating it on the record. In the album and in his essay, he's so sure of himself, and hand waves and oversimplifies things while presenting the narrator's (His) point of view as the only logically correct way to view things. While that may hold true in the ecosystem (read echo chamber) he’s created, it may or may not elsewhere (Which in my opinion, is what he was going for) and that weakens the album/concept/ essay/short film as vessels to get a message / story across on the more complicated subject of humanity. Also, my thoughts here really do pertain only to the album, which to me - concept or not - should stand on its own (Honestly I think it does, it’s just not for me), without a contextual explanation required to enjoy it.

      +Camila Pequeno Thanks! I'd say - while they're not in exactly the same genre - give True Widow and Russian Circles a try. TW's Self Titled or As High as the highest heights... records are good starting points and Russian Circle's lates record memorial is amazing and has that chelsea wolfe feature. Also Mamiffer's Statu Nascendi record may scrath the itch, Yowler's 'The Offer' and maybe a little further out there, The Body's new record or 'All the waters of the earth...'

    Nice review man. When I first listened to this album I felt the same way in that the tracks were hit or miss. None of them were bad as such, but some were excellent and some were filler. Fast forward a week of good listening and I've realised that nearly all the tracks on this album are great. The ones I was initially tentative to such as Mulholland Drive & Atom City Queen really grew on me. I didn't like AM Amnesia to start off with, but how wrong I was. I feel this album suffers not just in its length, but also in its detail. I couldn't maintain the level of focus that was required to really hear all of the spaced out detail, and brilliant effects, on the first few listens. If you are on the fence about this one, I would suggest giving it a good solid week of listening and going back to tracks you were unsure of with a fresh head on you. It's worth it. What a fucking comeback.

    @Brian F I really liked Otherwhere, my bad on not including my thoughts in the vid. One of my favorite records this year has a 173 minute run time. I wasn't complaining about length. If all the songs were as good as some of the highlights here, I wouldn't have cared how long it was.
