I love your perspective on drinking and totally respect it. Ik this might sound dramatic, but I find it crazy that as a society we just accept the fact that we poison ourselves “for fun” and then do shit we’re embarrassed about etc. I feel like it’s such a cop out to drink to be confident etc. like I get it, but it’s so much more fulfilling to just learn to have genuine, authentic fun. Idk. I do drink tho so I’m also just a hypocrite.

I gave up drinking alcohol at 18/19 for a least a year because I was deeply upset by the culture around me of young people in Ireland just getting pissed every weekend as a fun time instead of like trully connecting and making real friendships. It really changed my life! I began a whole self trajectory and found so much more things to do with my time. I started reading way more, playing music, going for walks etc and even connecting with my family. It is hard at the start and I did lose friends because I was deemed "boring" for not wanting to drink but ultimately I found out who my friends were! Im now with a partner for three years and we drink if we feel like it and we also try to ensure to drink for fun not for getting drunk because I realised I started to hate the feeling of being drunk after being away from it. We are very lucky in that regard and often will buy like non alcoholic wine on date nights etc!! It does not bother me at all if I don't drink now at social occasions if people question me i genuinely don't mind discussing alcohol with them but tbh I find a lot of people in Ireland get uncomfortable still!! But the more you don't care it gets easier. It's about reframing the whole thing in your head like you can still have so much fun sober you don't need drink to make you fun. I wish Ireland has more late night cafes... thats something Europe has really got but Ireland is behind on this. You wont miss out on anything, delete socials for a whole disconnect and you realise people talk a lot of the same shite haha and sometimes it's good shite but you realise like a lot of weekends are the same for young people just different location different people etc. you can still do everything you want whilst sober, its culture that will try drag you back to consumption beyond necessary (in every way not just alcohol) and it's up to us to realise this and make decisions for the good of our hearts and the planet. Good luck to you on this journey it is so possible, some people wont get it but those people probably are not your true people yeno, it's so fun to free ourselves of things that don't ultimate serve us in a good way ❤

Hi Saoirse I'd highly recommend The Outrun it's a great book about going sober beautiful set in the Orkney Isles in Scotland
