amateur pianist. this is less of an “official performance” thing and more of a “documenting my progress at exploring sorabji”. bought the Sequentia Cyclica for Christmas so if i find something that sounds cool and i can kinda play, ill probably post it.
getting back into playing piano after a few years after dropping out of music school bc i realized that my passion just became a responsibility when i had to study it. using my newfound sorabji obsession (thanks to some incredible youtube pianists) as a catalyst for getting back into taking piano seriously.
i have insane sight-reading skills but was cursed with an inability to focus on one piece of music for weeks on end. most of these videos were probably recorded within an hour or two of first looking at them, but i plan on actually trying to return to and improve upon stuff eventually. they’re riddled with mistakes, but there’s too little Sorabji in the world and i wanna do my part

return to sorabji pt 2 (Var XIII excerpt from Sequentia Cyclica)
first half of this is pretty new to me, never looked at it back in 2023 when i was initially working on this piece. second half around 0:54 is one of my favorite piano passages ever written though; it has a similar harmonic language to early Scriabin (Sonata 2) but combined with typical Sorabji rhythmic nonsense.
the wild thing about these excepts are that they’re probably the easiest 5 minutes of this 20-25 minute work. ill probably dig through more and try to find some more really melodic passages, but i have a difficult time making the really weird parts sound even remotely listenable.

possibly the greatest single Dies Irae variation ever written. still working on balancing the phrasing but the rhythms are feeling more natural by the day, hope to have a better (and longer) performance in the coming weeks. took a looong piano hiatus (other than occasionally messing around with some Kapustin) due to busy life and new passion in rock climbing keeping me away from the keyboard. b...

this is early progress on the opening and roughly first two minutes of the 39th (of 64) Dies Irae variation from Sorabji’s KSS41. there is a professional pianist working on recording the entire work but as far as im aware this is the first time anybody else has transcribed or played this variation. the set of variations as a whole has traits of Sorabji’s earlier and more chromatic/scale-based h...

more doodling on a grand piano at work while i wait for alcoholics to go home think i need to find some different configurations when i improv since a lot of it is very scale-based. also has less chords/clusters but i don’t really know that kinda harmony well enough to be confident in that yet lol. texture can be a little monotonous and a few harmonic shifts don’t work too well there are a few ...

slightly modified version of my first ever Comp 101 assignment (written in late 2019). ignore some of my lazy manuscript shortcuts haha this was basically my attempt at being “clever” with harmony and counterpoint despite never actually really formally learning either at the time #classicalmusic #classical #harmony #jazz #prelude #music #performance

Con fantasia a dolcezza😌
aria moment
It's more of Stravinsky on steroids
Ah, the one with "superhuman" busoni dedication, but sad, he felt this work is bad compared to his others
This is even more terrible (in a good way) than Max Reger!
moment!
I love sorabji, but this is sometimes too complex for me 😢
Mompou?
so delightful
omg epicc
What do you think of Sorabji's late work overall? It is truly bizarre, yet I love it.
do you have the full score?
What large scale work by Sorabji is this from?
passagieta veneziana
@@sloppysorabji Thanks. And have you considered trying to play some of Gulistan (if you have the score)?
@@johnrussell3067 i gave the intro a look a long time ago but wasn’t super pleased with how it turned out; the rest of the piece is way too complicated for me tbh ua-cam.com/video/3yqeL6vpuxM/v-deo.htmlsi=Zu0qN6_CrT0QsMib
@@sloppysorabji I don't blame you. It's got some complex polyrhythms. Movement 6 from Opus Archimagicum is probably the most absurdly difficult Aria style music I have seen that is by Sorabji. It has got some of the most challenging polyrhythms I have ever seen. Have you seen my performance of the first 9 pages of Gulistan? If so, what do you think of it?
The more I listen, the more I'm convinced that Sequentia Cyclia is the all-time peak of the piano... every bar of this Aria is dripping with love and intimacy and delicacy. And your playing! It emphasizes the stasis and peace of this gorgeous movement perfectly. You should return to uploading videos --- they have changed my opinion of Sequentia Cyclica thoroughly.
thank you, i appreciate it! i might return to piano and Sorabji at some point soon but lately my life has been far too busy with bartending and fitness (especially sport climbing). i also wanna hold myself to a higher standard with performances so excerpts would take considerably longer to put together, though coincidentally i did look through parts of the SC (the aria, even!) for the first time in months the day before your comment, so ill take it as a sign to put work into it in the near future
Сорабджи должен был умереть еще в 4 года от передоза но он продолжил въебывать тройные порции героина до конца жизни
ты вообще кто?
Amazing
sounds like the symphony of harvested organs
You should upload again. You have a very beautiful style of playing these - almost intimate and delicate. Particularly your SC and SV excerpts completely changed my opinion of the work (having not really digged Powell’s take on sequentia)
just took a gander at Sequentia Cyclica again if you’d like to check it out :)
Very well played!!
wonderful
Great
sloppygershwin
Beautiful work, subbed!!!
very pretty 🙏
Lovely!
I can't wrap my head around his organ symphonies. They are just TOO complex!
True..... I'd quote someone: Sorabji writes for organ like he writes for piano. It's hard to digest.
Básicamente, es ruido😂. Siento decirlo tan bruscamente pero es así. He oído mucha música, incluso alguna muy extrema y complicada, desde Ligeti a Merzbow, Sorabji no era un buen melodista.
I kinda agree with this@@m.a.g.3920
Zamn
You should play the piano when other people are around
Medtner?
nope, but it sure sounds like him doesn’t it
Morabji?
nailed it
Maurice Ravel?
Mendelsson
❤
A much refined audio quality? Epic!
Awesome video. You are privileged to be even able to play this piece!
the wild improvisations of a raving madman (someone who's been playing way too much sorabji). more please.
🫡 sir yes sir
Omg
It's one of his most scary and disturbing works... I love it.
The manuscript is so beautiful, as well as your playing.
Wonderful!
ayo, DM the pics of this so i can transcribe it in software, this is fire
will when i get home from work. sad part is it was transcribed but i lost the noteflight account all my school shit was on lmao
Something about your playing is so charming --- there's this gentile twinkle to your treble registers that emphasizes that cosmic prettiness of SC 10. I find your phrasing much more human and intimate than Powell's; I'd love to see what you could do on a grand. This is really great :)
epic
always on ur bullshit. miss you
very lovely
