Archtop Guitar Build - Wood Binding and Contours
In this video, I demonstrate the intricate process of bending curly maple binding around a form to achieve a snug fit on our Grasshopper Archtop guitar. This step is crucial for ensuring the perfect aesthetic and structural integrity of the instrument. Using curly maple with a black purfling strip, I'll show you my process from start to finish of binding an archtop guitar top.
Additionally, I'll walk you through the steps to add a forearm contour, enhancing both the playability and comfort of the guitar. This process takes time and patience! So sit back, relax, and enjoy the immersive sounds of the shop as we bring this beautiful instrument to life.

Truly remarkable work. It's hard to find anyone work with their hands anymore.
Yes. Yes it is
Great video. Glad you didnt show the basic construction of the build, because theres tons of videos out there and that isnt the point here. Too many other videos waste my time, but you got right to it! super dope project as well
Glad you enjoyed it, cheers!!
Ive watched so many build vids but i have never seen binding done like that. Truly a craftsman at work. Beautiful!
It's the best way to attach hardwood binding. Instant results and you don't end up with a glue joint that continues to sink for years!
Very nice work. This is something I have wanted to do for many years, but never got around to it. Life gets in the way. But I can watch a pro do it, and that's a lot less expensive...
😁😁😁
Wow! That is amazing work. I think this is the first time I have seen binding applied like that. Looking foreword to the next one!
Thank you! CA glue and a notched block is the best way.... People will tell you otherwise because they don't understand the technique. its a tough and frustrating learning curve compared to tite bond and tape. But especially on highly figured woods, CA glue all the way! On top of a ultra strong bond, the results are instant, and you can move on in your work flow rather than waiting for titebond to dry and sink your finish over time
Beautiful!!!! P.S. Those colors are amazing
Thanks so much, really appreciate that!!!
Fantastic build, design, guitar.... but please tell me that the colours were chosen by the customer and you haven't ruined her by your own accord..... guitar is just perfect! Or would ishe be with some vibrant paint. Respect to you as a builder.
Paint??????
That’s a very beautiful guitar
Thank you!
Very interesting. I look forward to seeing how it ties in with the guitar. Thanks
Thx man, I'll put a video up of the guitar when shes all done! It's got a pale moon ebony fingerboard, headstock, and all matching accessories :)
Gorgeous build and stellar sounds!👍👍👍🎸
Thank you!!
I love the f holes, the tail piece, the burst just fits and bro, the love and effort you put into this! Truly inspiring! Your video made my day, bro!!! Thannyou
Thanks a ton! Loads of effort for sure, and well worth every hour!
love that Mantis!
Thank you brother! This is the Mantis's brother! The Mantis has a symetrical belly where this one has a heavy offset!
Great looking guitar and it sounds beautiful. Good work 👍
Thank you so much, man!
The sound is amazing 👍
Appreciate that! I'm sure the sound will be incredible in a much better players hands!
Sounds great
What brand is your little disk sander?
That's a proxon!
I've have made a neck with s spoke wheel truss rod. I polished the wheel like you did then use cold bluing on it.
That's flippin brilliant! The birchwood casey product?
@@newillguitars yes
So cool!
That is going to be another hit. Love the work. What kind of angle grinder is that?
Thanks man! It's my buddy's old black n decker angle grinder with a stack of 30 grit discs on it
@@newillguitars Hmmmm... that looks mighty handy! Thanks bro.
How hard is it working with those stew Mac scrapers
They're great, you just gotta keep them sharp. Which I don't always have a stone wheel nearby to keep it sharp. But they are handy especially since you want an even contour around the top
Maaaaaan, freakin amazing brutha 🙏🏼🤘🏼
Thank you so much man!!!!!
Drop dead gorgeous. 😮😮
Thank you so much man!
And that could have been done with a sander in less than 5 minutes. Way to manage your time. And yeah, I'm a 30 year journeyman cabinet maker, and i own a guitar repair and custom build shop, since 2006. You have a lot to learn still
😂😂😂😂😂
Awesome work!! I like everything of this build so far!!! 😀
Glad you enjoy it!
Subbed. Amazing skills.
Much appreciated!
Absolutely insane craftsmanship, Patrick.
Pretty
The pain of watching a day or 2 of work get ripped out, oof!
:X
Masterpiece. I would not even dream of making such a complicated and wonderful build, I am really speechless
I'm envious of your gear! This should turn out to be a good-looking build. Looking forward to the next installment.
It's not my gear! I work at Artinger Guitars' shop
Brilliant thanks
You'd have more flow control using a syringe. 😊
100% will be doing this in the future!
These are very Languedoc-esque . Are you by chance into Phish?
Love em! I take a lot of inspiration from a lot of different archtop builders!
Amazing
Thank you! Cheers!
Fantastic
Seems like a very languedoc inspired build. Beautiful build!
This bass is looking amazing!!! This bass is a real spectacle!!! All I can do is congratulate you on this gem!!! It looks a bit like the Fodera bass.. I wanted to ask you for a video suggestion for the next video.. how about making a Fodera emperor 5-string bass!?? It's very easy to find a photo of it on Google and have it enlarged to size 53-52x34-32cm.. Agreed?!! Then just make a perfect finish on the edges... get to work?!!
Thank you, Brother! Probably not... I'm 100% focused on doing all my own original designs for now!
Gorgeous guitar sounds great too fender amp?
It's actually just a little peavey lunchbox head into a 1x12. Great little amp tho!
Great work. How heavy is a wenge neck compared to a more traditional maple one?
About the same as a maple neck, depending on the piece of maple, a touch lighter maybe
Very very well done, beautiful
What size of grit that ur files use for shaping guitar neck sir??
not sure, I use just a standard shinto rasp thats got 2 grits, ones very course, the other a bit finer, and a stewmac dragon file
Nice idea using the drill press to carve the top, that may help me doing mine. It's a pensa/shur like.
It's the best way I know to get the depth just right along a contoured surface :)
I dont understand, metrical system is much better than imperial system, imperial system sucks. Its not preccission.
its just as precision as metric, albeit more complicated for sure!
@onemintjulep actually imp. would be superior if it was base 12. But it is not. Inches for rough work are measured typically in 16ths. Occasionally 32nds or 64ths. Precision work is measured in 1,000ths or even 10,000ths of an inch. Feet are commonly measured in 12ths, but maybe measured in other units. Neither metric nor imperial is better for singular measurements, as the both deliver very simular precision, accuracy and repeatability. However metric is superior when it comes to complex multi unit calculations as all units for temps, pressure, mass, distance etc are in the same base 10 regardless of the measurement scale. It's why the vast majority of the world uses it, including the USA for scientific and most mass production purposes. That said had metric could have been even better if it had been base 12 or even base 20 as originally intended.
очень красиво!
Great job, beautiful guitar, and she sounds great
Beautiful work I wish to learn this craft so much
