As if a 2-1/2-inch maple bench top wasn't enough. I decided to take things to the next level by adding a 5/8-inch steel top. At 510 lbs, moving this thing was no joke. I slid a couple of aluminum rods underneath the plate to help roll it off my truck, and onto the lift table. A stool was used a extra support, and I marked the center of the plate to ensure that things didn't get off balance.

Time to install the backstop, paint it, and mount the bowling lane bench top. No help? No problem! I purchased a lift table to aid in placing the top onto the tool cabinets. The table came short by a few inches, so I made a pallet from 2 x 4s to add a few extra inches of height. After that, it was all a matter of careful and patient maneuvering.

I searched high and low for a backstop kit that met the dimensions of my workbench top, but to no avail. The solution? Build my own! For the backstop, I used 3" x 1/8" thick flat stock, rough cut to length with a shop saw, and final cuts were made with my Dremel (works if you have patience!).
