zicatela is fucking violent dude, fuck that wave. With zero shame I can say it humbled me and i do not have the balls to spend anymore time there
In May of 1971 I took the bus from Oaxaca city to Puerto. I didn't have a surfboard but a had fins for bodysurfing. In those two weeks I didn't see a surfboard. I surfed Zicatela and got the rides of my life. The last day the surf came up huge, as we stood on the point looking outside, my buddy asked if I thought it could be surfed, I said maybe with an aqua lung and a helicopter! In my journal I named it the "Mexican Pipeline".

I grew up surfing the east coast of Florida and people don't realize there were SEVERAL incredible breaks hear from, Jax Beach to Flagler Pier, to Coco, New Smyrna, Ft. Pierce, Jupiter, Stuart, and the gem of them all Sebastian Inlet. Massive development, huge hurricanes, and jetty expansions have killed off most of those incredible breaks. They produced the greatest surfers in the world such as Kelly Slater and Freida Zamba. Such a tragedy.

It didn't come into existence until the coast had changed its formation over the last I think 20 years. The spot will not remain forever and likely will not remain very long at all and so we better enjoy it while it's here

Yes, seems the sand and swell direction made the wave a bit more forgiving. But we've also seen that change drastically from one swell to the next in the past.
