My video's about coastal geography, geomorphology, and climate change, mostly taken doing field work. Also, some video's about my professional practice and scholarship as a University Professor and lecturer.
For further reading into the coastal topics, please see my Coastal Systems textbook, the third edition of which has been published in 2016 by the University of Wales Press and available from www.uwp.co.uk/editions/9781783169009

2004 Indian Ocean tsunami 10 years on at Miami Beach, Penang, Malaysia
In the field with Professor Simon Haslett visiting Miami Beach (Bay) in Batu Ferringhi on the north coast of Penang Island, Malaysia, in the Straits of Malacca. Miama Beach was hit by the Indian Ocean tsunami on 26th December 2004 and , unfortunately, a number of fatalities occurred on the beach despite the tsunami being relatively small (approximately 3 m high). A report after the event recommended the erection of warning signs educating beach users to the signs of an approaching tsunami; however, none were seen during the visit. Educating beach users to seek higher ground if the sea recedes is important in minimising future loss of life due to, in this case a relatively small, tsunami.

Vortex (whirlpool) in flood waters in South Wales
Переглядів 4,2 тис.12 років тому
A vortex (whirlpool) in flood waters of the Olway Valley, near Usk, Monmouthshire, on 25th November 2012. The vortex is created on the upstream side of an archway under a road causeway across the floodplain of the Olway Brook. The flood level is higher than the top of the arch. Note that the vortex is stationary and if deep enough might erode the floodplain surface beneath, especially if armed ...
Swell waves breaking on Swanpool Beach, Cornwall.

Swell waves arriving and breaking at Swanpool Beach, near Falmouth, Cornwall. The video firstly depicts waves breaking over granite boulders, emplaced as part of rock armourment protecting the coast from wave attack and erosion. The last part of the video shows waves breaking on the sandy part of the beach. The beach is relatively steep and reflective, and the waves typically break as plunging ...

Water Vortex
Переглядів 9 тис.13 років тому
A water vortex created in a tank at Techniquest, Cardiff, Wales. Water vortices have been associated with turbulent tsunami flow. It has been argued that a vortex may act like a 'drill-bit' if armed with pebbles and small boulders at its tip, drilling into bedrock forming a circular erosion scar. See E. A. Bryant (2008) Tsunami: the Underrated Hazard (2nd Edition, Praxis Publishers, Chichester)...
Ice age sea-level change in Hong Kong

Professor Simon Haslett (University of Wales) explains how a unique record of ice age climate and sea-level change was investigated on the sea bed under what is now Hong Kong International Airport. The results of the analysis of a 40m sediment core was published by geoscientists from the Universities of Hong Kong and Wollongong in 2002 in the academic journal Quaternary International. Good presentation
Helo .. im from Indonesian
Also sorry I've been looking to try and find an appropriate microscope to view radiolarians. I'm assuming a LM (Light Microscope) SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope). Could you recommend somewhere I can purchase one of these types of microscopes but a very basic one. Nothing fancy!
Hi I'm looking at a mini research project into this for my children. How shallow can you go to get radiolarians? Does it have to be a certain depth where they begin or will it be found in shallow sediments too such as a normal beach? Thank you.
Outstanding presentation.
This is more applicable now than then
CovidImages need to be invested more than half19
wait, this isnt a fornite commerical. im angr now >:)
i just know that the last prof video is from Malaysia. would you visiting that country again? yup it was 10 years ago the unexpected tsunami happened.

this is so boring without the people in the back.
did anybody see the girl dancing in the back at the beggining.
We are currently residing in Miami Beach and this video was very informative and helpful. Thank you!
This is my country lol
I'm working on the Cretaceous Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE), & I noticed that these "Radiolarians" almost take part in all samples that I've already made their thin sections! Since I am a pure sedimentologist and frankly very immature about rads, and since I have no idea about the exact age of the study strata which is necessary for determining the kind of OAEs (1a, b,..), I wonder if these rads can be useful in order to determine the age or/and my event/s?
Cool, thank you
the cough at the end is comedy gold
They had plenty of time after the final word to just cut that, but nah one take she'll be right. Love it.
Absolutely fascinating!
nice sand dunes
Hello fellow geography classmates btw it’s max
Most of the foreigner who working here throw the rubbish into the river. As a Malaysian, we love our river n country.
shit
Org merokok kau saman, org yg buang sampah ko biarkan.. peti ais pun buang dlm sungai..
Those girls in the behind are distracting my focus🤨
same.
Thank you for explaining practically....😊
he's so happy talking about waves B L E S S
Ocean floor? Marine environment? OK, I have a 600 gallon fresh rain water tank alongside my house. I've pulled more than one sample out of it and seen more than one radiolaria under my AO 110 compound microscope. What gives?
2019 gang?
Very helpful sir , Bobs vegana from Bihar, India
Hi prof although you are a good looker (you must be Welsh) your head is in the picture to much. Research has shown that 10 sec head 50 sec pan or pics of area is better for punters attention to the great content of this and other vids.

Thank you soo much, this was really fascinating and made easy to understand the concepts.
Many times we see ugly sights of the Gombak and Klang River with rubbish debris.
Teringin nk berak kat sungai ni..nk tgk taik aku terpung
Semoga kerajaan PH mengambil berat utk membaikkan lagi saluran sungai di KL dgn sistem yg boleh membersihkan air sungai dari ulu sungai dan membasmikan perbuatan2 membuang sampah kedlm sungai.
Tq Prof.. you're awesome...
Hello, do you have a video about finding drinking water on the beach? They say that the freshwater ground table can be found under the first sand dune ridge, but my experiments suggest its not always true...
