What the storm did to my Florida Island home.
Переглядів 1912 місяці тому
Hurricane Debby made land fall on Anna Maria Island the morning of August 4th, 2024 but for us, it was just a tropical storm. The system itself was over 100 miles west of the islands but still delivered roughly 14 inches of rain in a 24 hour period inundating the drainage system on the island. Streets were flooded like never before. After the bulk of the storm and storm surge threat had passed,...

    During the cold war, the primary purpose was the Navfac, which housed the SOSUS cable termination and analysis. for detecting and tracking Soviet submarines. The P3 VP wing took the search to localize the contacts. If necessary to drop a nuclear depth bomb. Very serious stuff. I was an electronics tech at the Navfac for my year on the rock 74. The fallout shelters were a real joke, as the Hydrogen Bomb that would hit the island would leave nothing but a huge crater where the island used to exist.

    Great video. I went to WWII Weekend and saw the Mid-Atlantic Air Museums P-61B-1 this past June. The plane was brought to the museum in 1989. Progress has been slow but the aircraft is looking good and they hope to have her airworthy in just a few more years. I've been donating to the project for 35 years now and hope I live to see this beast fly.

    I was stationed there and worked in both fire depts. Main base and NSGA (which was called CommSta at the time) 1/76-12/76. I forgot about these shelters. I was only out there once and I don't remember why my company drove out there. I was given a TS clearance. All the guys in my fire company had one. We were firefighters but we were charged with escorting any nuclear weapons to and from the tarmac to the 7 doors of Doom Armory, always in the middle of the night so the Russian Satellites couldn't watch. We were charged with being the portable NBC (nuclear, biological, and chemical) decontamination team in the event of an accident during movement. There were 2 5-man teams we were Fire Company 3, a team for each shift. I have a picture of the crew in our Zinc-impregnated suits and gas masks after a training session. I was just a 20-year-old kid then and never thought about the amount of destruction these weapons could cause that we worked around then. It happened about once a month. In my debrief when I was leaving the Rock as we called it I was told none of what I saw or did existed or happened and if anyone asked what I did there to say I was just a firefighter. Adak had a lot of secrets that even some of the residents didn't know about. If I remember you had to have a Secret clearance just to get on the Rock but I'm not sure of that.

      Wow- fantastic comment! I am headed to Adak at the end of August. I want to do a story on the 7 Doors of Doom and a few other sites around 'The Rock.' @@FloridaBeachesToTheBeringSea I sent some pics of Adak to you with messenger and yes the pic of me and the crew in the zinc-impregnated suits 😂😂. If you could get into the fire station out at NSGA, I'd love to see it. It was built long after I left Both fire stations that I worked in are gone FS #1 was just past the High School. That is gone and so is the crash station by the Control tower is gone, and the original FS #2 that was at NSGA close to the water is gone too. Finger Bay has a lot of history that seems to be overlooked. So that's about it. Have fun and safe travels. Can't wait to see your next video.

    was there in 90-91. One of my Collateral Duty Assignments was as CNBW Officer for the intermediate level maintenance unit there. Never knew about these shelters. Had monthly training sessions with personnel on how to don 15 year old gear and go out and take Gieger readings with equipment that was past it's calibration date. Put in requisitions for new gear. Denied. Put in requisitions for calibration. Denied. Have a lot of ill feelings towards the command structure at the time. Glad to not be there and to know I will never have to go back.

    Tough question. Recovery for what purpose? My first thought is to leave it in place as a reminder and memorial to those folks and times of WWII. My only concern with leaving it in place would be dealing with the scavengers and vandals.

    • @FloridaBeachesToTheBeringSea
      @FloridaBeachesToTheBeringSea 2 місяці тому

      It is a tough question. Scavengers have picked apart many a wreck along the chain to sell their parts and in some cases to bring back to life another aircraft. Some people just for souvenirs. I am always torn on this subject.

    This is, indeed, a rare bird. My mother worked on P-61 assembly line, initially drilling bulkheads prior to riveting and then installing machine guns. Those painted black were night fighters. These planed came into the war very late and many had guns replaced by cameras as they were repurposed as reconnaissance aircraft.
