Michael Basman has been reputed to be an original and independent chess player and thinker for the whole of his chess career. However, around 1978 he mobilized his creativity to develop new ways in chess strategy, based on a personal set of avant-garde opening systems such as the St.George (early b4.. of ..b5) and Grob (early g4.. or ..g5). Consistently employing his new ideas, a whole new syst...

Strategic ideas for Black on the Leningrad Dutch

Watching model games forms the core of my method for learning the Leningrad Dutch. To complement this, I've prepared two videos: one detailing the main strategies for White, and another for Black. The goal is to equip learners with the skills to analyze additional games not covered here, enabling them to understand the strategic objectives of the players.

If you want to improve your middlegame play, you will have to develop a FEEL for positions. That's what Boris Zlotnik has been stressing during his long and rich trainer's career. Clicking through concrete variations (a popular pastime in the computer era) is not enough. To guide your thinking during a game you should be able to fall back on a reservoir of typical ideas and methods.

On the white move e4, e5 is also possible and a thematic push in the Dutch On Ng5 I would put the bishop on the diagonal targeting the f1 Rook, gaining a tempo then h6 (that allows the King to go to h7 if needed and surprotect the pawn, especially VS a B+Q battery from White) After that I would try to play c6 d5 slowly and end up with hanging pawns in the center, both an asset and a relative weakness

Regarding ...g6 instead of ...Re8 at about 8:10, a nice-looking game which stuck in my memory is "Big Larry" Christiansen vs. Florin Gheorghiu from 1977. I seem to recall someone writing that Gheorghiu would gladly play either side of such IQP positions, not having a marked preference as some GMs did. @@Yornek1 first of all thank you for following my channel and take the time to give me some feedback. I'd like to share with you what made me do this channel. I'm about the pleasures we have lost. The digital world promised to give us chess, but what it gave us is cheating, people who cannot evaluate a position without an engine, and total lack of feelings. When I replay a game over the board I feel the wood, heavy, the warmth, the difficulty to reach some squares, even the difficulty to read and move the pieces. The descriptive notation is something alien, but Fischer even wrote his games in descriptive! I'm not against computers. In fact I just installed the new Chessbase 18, and I'll do some videos about it. But I have something like 50 chess sets and I'd like to show them all. Some are historical. I'd like some help to improve the graphic. I'd like to find a camera which reproduces the real color of the chess sets. Some wood like padauk is amazing but I don't see it in the videos. What about you. Tell me more about your chess. What do you look for in chess.

Good question. Look the problem is this many different federations, during different time periods have defined CM in different ways. USCF doesn't really have a CM title, but they have now an expert title which is achieved by a rating of 2000+. Instead like you just mentioned 2200 is for FIDE the CM title, while in US 2200 one becomes A National Master (NM). Kalinin the author of the book is a GM from Russia. Honestly I don't know if in Russia all tournaments are FIDE rated, or if like in US they have their own national titles system (because it's too expensive to have all the tournaments FIDE rated, plus now they have another problem in Russia with FIDE), which could mean for them a CM is someone reaching 2100.
