I've had experiences like this and or worse ones. Every time I make progress I make a new save so if it turns out to not work I can go to an old save and try again. I once edited a material and when I closed it asked to save the edited image. I didnt think much of it but turns out it didnt save it and I had to do it all over again. Then there was the time when I was doing weight paint, finally got it working and figured out. I saved and went to bed. Next day I wake up, go back to my computer to continue my work and the weight paint was a MESS! It looked like someone snuck on and painted everywhere. I had no idea how it happened and I had to start all over. I was NOT happy. Then there was recently, I had two identical models (same head model) and I wanted to use its rig as a way to cheat out of weight paint. Data transfer etc. When I was finally done and ready to do that I got help in a discord server etc but the weight didnt transfer. I told them it didnt work and I was assumed to be a troll. Only later I found out that turns out all the vertex groups completely disappeared. If you try to weight paint the reappear however its broken. Like the corner of the mouth weight would also be on the right shoulder in the same group. It was a MESS. I was freaking otu I thought I was screwed. I couldnt even find the original blend file the finished model was from. HOWEVER I had it ported to source filmmaker and I decompiled it. So I was back in business and the transfer worked as intended so it was a lucky save. I have plenty more experiences but I either dont feel like typing more or I dont remember 100% at the moment

I make blenders save every 5 minutes and allow up to six backups. Blender be too unstable sometimes I don't trust it
