Welcome to Old Fogey Life.
Hello, folks. We are Dave and Laurie, two old fogies who are living an adventurous life, and we thought we’d like to bring you along for the ride.
Dave is a Type 1 Diabetic, so we’ll go into how he manages that.
Laurie has osteo-arthritis, so we’ll go into how she manages that.
At the moment, because of Covid, we are biking on our recumbent trikes (and planning), but in the future we’ll also be sailing. Dave also does a lot of hiking, photography, kayaking, and is also a bit of a techie.
Laurie can’t take part in many of the activities anymore. She can ride a recumbent, though, and writes and is our social media person.
We hope you come along, subscribe, hit the bell, and enjoy our journeys.

Have you been to NZ yet? I'd like to know about flying internationally with a trike
I am In NZ now and will be back in Canada on the 12th. We shipped lorries trike with our belongings. I plan to buy a new trike this winter and fly to New Zealand with the trike in October, I will let you know all the details.
👍 first
I too ride with the Brooks B67 saddle & also have that front stabilizer. My drivetrain is similar to yours. 44/33/22 with 11-42 rear. I agree about Schwalbe. I run the 29x2.15 Almotion tubeless. No flats in 5 years. I also have upright bars(Jones 2½" H-bar). Nice rig.
Perfect.. 👍
That bike must weigh 100 lbs?
At 14:36 chain maintenance: T clean and lube my trike chains at the rear wheel by simply turning the back wheel and cleaning my chain as it courses past the derailleur.
Thanks, I will try that next time I built a stand for my trikes sound like a good ideal
My experience is the opposite. I cruise at 26 kph on my Sprint X and around 20 on my Disc Trucker. The trike is a lot faster.
The ICE Sprint X is far faster than my scorpion with its 20" back wheel. I think my next trike will be ICE Sprint, I love the low seating position and definitely going with a 26” back wheel
The Surly Long Haul trucker seems to be the de facto standard for long distance cycling. The butterfly bars seem like a really good idea. I wonder if the newer Disc Trucker is as good. Lots of good information.
Thank-you. I am considering getting a another trike with power assist for my next touring bike. I have toured on both the Surly and the HP Scorpion. The surly is faster and more nimble but the scorpion in more comfortable, and it is much easier to do long days on the bike and can carry more I discussed the difference in my Trike vs Bike video.
Thank you for sharing your insight . Nice rig . Where did you source the extra capacity water bottle carrier ?
Bought it a bicycle shop about 7 years ago in west Broadway Vancouver but they have long since closed.
If you're looking for carriers for nalgenes sized bottles, check out Velo Orange Mojave bottle cages. They're SS, so a bit heavier but I've been using them for 5 years & they hold nalgenes snuggly.
Thanks for the leed on bottle cage .👍
I'm happy to hear you say Walcrap. If people knew the truth, Walmart would go out of business
Thanks
My friend calls it Chinamart.
excellent
Many many thanks
congratulations
Hi good to hear from you, glad you two are riding and having fun. Thanks for doing your video.
Your welcome
I almost had the last made tilting ar-3 trike, but sadly the maker didn't want to help out with shipping....
Nice LHT sir, thanks for the review. Safe travels.
Do you have a video on how you made the cover and what materials you used?
Sorry no the cover started out as a kayak sunshade and was very heavily modified the extra clear plastic was bought from a fabric store.
What brand are the stand up aids? Thanks
On Laurie's trike they are Catrike Assist Arms from TerraCycle. On the Scorpion the are from HP Velotechnik and have to be ordered from Germany. My next trike will be a Catrike e-559
My Catrike Max changed my ability to stay healthy. 2 wheels are painful to ride for me. It helped me lower my A1C to normal levels in just a few months.
I am going to do a video on why Laurie and I started to ride a trike Laurie has the Cattrike Trail. without the trike she could not ride a bike at all.
@@OldFogeyLife I'm looking forward to it
Bicycle typically faster, but trike ONLY rideable choice for some of us.
I plan to do a second video with the reasons why Laurie and I got a trike t will be quite short. I think that fully agrees with your observations.
Excellent video 😊
Thank you very much! I plan to do a second video on why Laurie and I got a trike, t will be quite short.
You go, Dave!
Nice solutions
Just gave up on the recumbent, huh? I totally get it.
Sorry for taking so long to get back to you I am going to do a video on why Laurie and I started to ride recumbent and also why I can now go back to riding a regular bike. Also if you want you can check out my video where I compare a bike to a trike. Ther are good and bad on both bikes.
Biking or triking? There's a huge difference.
biking
I finally did a comparison video of Bike vs Trike and my next will be the reasons I started to ride a trike. ua-cam.com/video/qnSXKsB1PeY/v-deo.html
I like you and the cat in the video!
loved the video thanks for sharing.
You are so welcome!
Did u count how many word “and”used in this vedio😂
Nicely kitted out. I noticed no foot retention on the pedals. Should have something to prevent foot from slipping off.
These seam to work the best for Laurie try a bunch of options. The aggressive MB pedals tend to hold feet firmly in place and she hasn't had any issues with her feet slipping off. She is not a aggressive ride .
@@OldFogeyLifeYour foot only has to slip off the pedal once to seriosly damage a leg/ankle/foot. Believe me, I was a paramedic!
Nicely kitted out trike!
I love it!
Thank's I up in Prince George now and hope to show some winter videos
Thanks for doing your video, it was great to here from you both. Look forward to seeing you riding again once you get settled in your new home take care. I have subscribed to to your channel to be able to see you. From Canada.
Thanks the second video of the New Zealand series is now up.
Thanks. My trike is on the way to NZ now. It'll be here in 6 - 12 weeks. We plan to be together by October
Saw a message that you were going to New Zealand, did you get there and did you do a video of your travels. Did you take your trikes with you? loved your videos and was looking forward to more. Hope this message has found you both well. Take care.
WOuld be nice to have a video on how you insure the safety of your trike and all those nice accessories when you have it parked some where's.
I'm over 60 and thinking of getting an eTrike, though I don't see the purpose of getting an electric bike. The purpose of getting a bike or trike is to get exercise, I'll probably get the non-electric. Any advice on my decision?
That depends on how limber you are. You don't need an electric if you're able to bike by yourself. It keeps you fit to keep on biking.
how are you Laurie and Dave? have not seen a video this summer from you two . Are you all right and where are you riding this summer?
Sorry you haven't heard from us. We are getting ready to go to New Zealand in October. Dave is working to make extra cash. We really haven't had time to make videos, sorry.
Do you know if the Catrike trail comes with 26 inch wheels
You can get a hold of Catrikes and ask them. I do believe they provide 26 inch wheels
Ur keen bru. Im a fair bit lazier maybe. I rain proof the rider only. Kinda like a scuba diver wearin a dry suit. Its bril coz u can wear business clothes underneath & just take off the drysuit gear.
cool
Looks brilliant sir. I am having to look into a trike due to health problems i am having trouble balancing my two wheel bike now at slow speed and whilst cornering slow or when i come to a stop and try get feet down. I really like the idea that a canopy can be attached on a stable trike that cannot be put on a two wheeler. Thanks for the video, most inspiring.
Hey PW😃. I was in the same spot as u 2 & a bit yrs ago. My recumbent trike has saved my life, & its just so much fine to ride! Its like ur 8 years old again on the bestest fastest billycart ever... Woohoo eh! Good luck to u PW👍
Dave got me my recumbent trike because I can't balance on a diamond frame, either. I ride the recumbent everywhere! It's great!
thanks for share。have a good life
Thank you
It's nice that the orientation of the controls keeps the cables away from the riders legs. I love my terratrike, but the brake and shifter cables face in and brush my legs sometimes.
I'm glad that mine don't brush my legs. That would have put my off from buying it
@@lauriedevere4920 the cables are not too bad, but the hydraulic lines on my second one are right in there, one has actually kinked from hitting a leg, not sure who's.
*What an adorable couple! And so many informative recumbent videos! Subscribed!* 🚲🌎🚲🌈
I really like your trike walk around videos. I wish more people would do them to show their particular set up / customization. To me that is more interesting than the ride videos.
Thank you
That was very useful, thank you 😊
Thanks. I'm glad it was useful
that was a great video, it even gave me a bit of a laugh today as well. I really do not like Triking in the rain but it gave me some ideas what to do for shade in the hot sun with that canopy. thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
when you go to get groceries do you lock up your trike or does one of you stay with the trikes while the other one shops. I want to take my trike to get groceries but am afraid someone will steal the trike.
I always lock up the trikes. I use a ABUS chain lock for the trikes if we are both shopping we use a car parking space and simply lock the bikes together.
When I go by myself I have a huge chain that I wrap around something that they can't lift it off. I always lock the trike.
I am glad Trikes are not fast because I do not want to race I just want to enjoy the ride and the days fun. loved the video.😀
No, they are not fast, but they are comfortable, and get us around. I don't want to race, either. I just want to get the groceries :)
Thanks Laurie and Dave that was an excellant Q&A my questions are answered and I have gotten what you have helped me with. Have fun and happy trails ahead. I am from Cambridge Ontario Canada.
Oh, good! I'm glad it answered your questions.
do you have a video on how you made your bins? Thanks this was a great video and really like those bins.
Dave will do a video on making the new bins for his bike. At the moment all we have is the Q&A video
This was a great scenic ride! Thanks for sharing 😊
Glad you enjoyed it. Do you like the overlay ?
@@OldFogeyLife Yes, I enjoy the overlay with the narration of the ride ☺️
