Follycast Episode 1 Rivers Of London
Sorry to hear the sad news guys. Best wishes
I just wanted to add to the comments on this book - which is one of my favorites - that I absolutely loved the scene where Peter helps clear the confused WWII airmen out of the Glossop area. Rather than seeing as irrelevant, I thought it was a lovely look at the use and relevance of the talents that he has learned from Nightingale. It always makes me a little weepy when the plane takes off. I find the scene tender and a big step in Peter's maturity.
I disagree. I learned about some interesting books from their comments!
I find it interesting that there aren't any comments on this UA-cam thread, but I am hoping there was more discussion on this book via the other comment options. I just want to note a couple of things. First of all (and I was really surprised no one else mentioned this in the podcast) was the short but powerful portrayal of London's reaction to the death of David Bowie, to the point that there was a citywide "atmosphere" of loss. I thought that was really well done. He didn't dwell, but definitely drew attention to the feeling. The other thing about this book is that it nearly put me off of ROL, but I am glad I hung on because the series shook off the bit that bothered me. I am deeply lodged in the fandom of Douglas Adams' books, and the sheer volume of references to his work in False Value dragged me down from the weight of them. I realize that it was calling attention to the lack of imagination of Tech billionaires and the overuse of references was making fun of Skinner as much as an homage to Adams, but it made me crazy. I felt that it would have been a better and more original book without the heavy reliance on H2G2. I agree that it is a good thing that at least he didn't try to imitate Adams' prose style (something I have never heard adequately executed). Nevertheless, my copy of False Value found itself being thrown across the room several times in protest to the saturation of the cute trope. I am speaking about this on the threshold of reading the new Nightingale novella, which I hear is written in homage to one of my other favorite writers, P.G. Wodehouse (whom, to close a circle, was a huge influence on the writing of Douglas Adams). Frankly I am terrified that Masquerades in Spring is going to lay on the Wodehouse as thickly as the Adams is laid on to False Value. Wish me luck, I'm going in.
We are spread across various platforms like Apple Podcasts and Spotify where we started we put back episodes up on UA-cam quite late in the day, so it's not our 'main' platform in terms of feedback. We tend to get the most comments from Facebook when I post each episode in the three separate Facebook groups dedicated to RoL. I do get emails when we have a comment on UA-cam though and they are always much appreciated! I tend to agree about the HGTTG references being overdone, but as you can tell from the podcast, I enjoyed False Value more than my fellow presenters, mainly because having done work for tech companies like the one portrayed in the book, I found Peter going underground in such a corporate environment very engaging. If you do have any feedback on Masquerades do let us know, so we can feature it in the next pod, which will also be reviewing Winter's Gifts. Just add it in the comments for episode 15 if you are able. I will be reading Masquerades just as soon as I have finished the latest Slow Horses.
By page 2 of book 1 i was texting the person who gave me the book saying "oh my word this reads soooo douglas adamsy". I loved all the books until FV and stuck it out because of how much i love the series. It was hard going. I do miss the smaller scale of the first 5 or 6 books but the development of the folly and the world building is a strength of the structure and plotting of the books.
I realize I am coming in woefully late on this, but I am a serious ROL fan and just can't stay out of the fray, having just discovered the podcast. I am surprised that no one has mentioned the rather explicit sex that seems to drop into the series via this book, as if it was decided "this will be the sexy one". Although there are some sexy scenes in other ROL books, I have seen nothing quite like the Moon Over Soho sex elsewhere. I wonder if people (publishers? Fans? Teachers?) came to Ben and asked that he lighten up a bit on the, well, naughty bits. I would be interested in what others think.
We have just published an interview we did with Ben (Follycast 15) in which he references that he does go further in Moon Over Soho than subsequent books. I can't remember his exact words, but something along the lines of being shocked himself where the story led him. My guess would be that he reigned himself back. I was also shocked by the baby scene in book one.
You all may address this later, but I would suggest that your sound balance could be improved a lot: when the between-commentary music occurs, it is much louder than the voices, so much so that I have to yank my earbuds out of my ears when it starts.
Hi Janette - Yes you are right! We became aware of this across the first few podcasts and hopefully it does get better as I got the hang of the editing software. I edit the podcast in a quiet room, but we have to be aware that some people may listen with noise in the background - on a train or in a car and so turn the volume up to hear and then the music is a shock. It's always a challenge as if the voices are too loud they distort. Sorry!
I'm on the Foxglove podcast now (binge-listening), and I do think it's getting more evenly balanced. Thanks! I am really enjoying the podcast and confusing my husband, because I reply and comment as if I was there, and he wonders who I am talking to.
More Indigo! More Indigo! More Indigo! 😊
Welcome back
Ben: "I wasn't expecting Bev to get pregnant." Yeah, neither was Peter. :)
😆
Nice to have you back folks! Sorry for your loss though. Also I'm a huge Radio Free Skaro fan, although in working through the back catalogue, I seem to be stuck in 2017! 😆😆
I thought I might be the only one in the ROL/RFS overlap. You should reach the Ben episode in a few years time!
Don’t do other book recommendations- it’s filler.
I just revisited this podcast after reading the Winter's Gift novella (which is excellent). A very entertaining discussion as ever - please do keep the reviews/discussions coming. The only thing I would add as a discussion point going forward (and really the only negative of this book, as far as I was concerned) is the lack of an overarching plot in the most recent entries. For me, the very best series (be it fantasy, sci-fi or crime fiction) all benefit from such a mechanism, and as you noted, the potential new "big-bad" hinted at in False Value wasn't addressed here. The series as a whole was, in my view, at its best when the Faceless Man storyline was being developed/played out (even if it was in addition to the main plot). I had hoped that the more recent books were developing a new, second arc, but this does not appear to be the case (particularly if your read/listen to BA's pronouncements on how he approaches plotting each book). The Winter's Gift novella does mention, once again, the recent unexplained increase in abnormal activity. I hope this is a hint at a wider narrative, with a satisfying pay-off but fear this may not be the case. On an unrelated topic, given how well you all complement each other, have you considered covering other popular series? If so, I for one would certainly listen!
Hi! Thanks for the positive feedback, aways good to get, as we know we operate in something of a 'niche'! Yes we are about to read Winter's Gifts and are planning a new episode in a month or so. The original run of episodes were recorded on a monthly basis, but then we ran out of books and novellas, and whilst I like the graphic novels the others weren't as keen ( as you may have heard if you listened to that episode), so it will be good to do another episode. On your point about an ongoing story arc I do agree. Given Ben's background in TV, I had seen the first seven books as like the first season, resolving the big bad and was expecting the next few to have a similar shape. I guess you could argue that the continuity is now more around character development (the twins, the return of Leslie etc), but I do like a good story arc. We attended the Winter's Gift launch at Waterstone's Piccadilly and he did reveal (spoilers) that the next two main novels will be about Aberdeen and the Pandemic respectively, so it sounds like they may be more self-contained as well. With regard to doing another book series, I think we would be up for that, if we could find a series - we did think of either Vinyl Detective or the Bryant & May books, but toy your earlier point about ongoing arcs, they don't have any through continuity, so we would miss the fun of speculating what would happen next. I love the Expanse books, but there are tons of podcasts about that due to the recent TV series. Any suggestions gratefully received!
Finally got to read this latest and then to thoroughly enjoy your discussion as always.
Thanks - what did you make of the book yourself?
@@thefollycast-ariversoflond5979 Thoroughly enjoyed it! I agree that the character development of the regulars is good. I did disagree with some of you in that I really liked the ghost soldier segment and found it refreshing structurally as well to have a little short-story-within-the-story.
Excellent book, one would hope the Danni Dog incident would lead to the Black Dog of Newgate joining the Folly, a pony sized spirit dog capable of putting the fear of god into the evildoer. I also wonder whether as both Peter and Peter’s dad were bitten by the Jazz Vampires and survived whether Peters daughters are not Genius Loci or mortal but instead the twin Muses of Jazz, the Rivers do love their Jazz, and as such it gets round Beverley outliving them. In Monday, Monday Peter notes that they will not take separation. Monday Monday also foreshadows Peter’s Dad’s death in series. Corrupt cop in Monday, Monday..
I understand the observation that some of the flourishes are fan service-y, but not sure why that (and this is true for any content described as "fan service") is seen as a bad thing. I have to admit this was my favourite novella so far, and Abigail is my favourite character. I feel like her family circumstances have forced her to grow up a lot faster, and her inner monologue reflects that, while her speech is modulated by herself to confirm to what her peers would expect.
As someone who has spent scary amounts with Big Finish over the years,, I certainly have nothing against fan service!
I find it really interesting that Richard keeps comparing elements in all the books to TV shows. I never compared any of the books to TV, maybe because I was listening on Audible. Generally I feel that the different media require different storytelling techniques
Richard here - Yes - sorry about that! I guess I have tended to do that because I first came across Ben Aaronovitch as a TV writer and then when he wrote Doctor Who tie-in novels in the Nineties, so am probably more likely to do that than for other authors who don't have those origins. We are about to record an episode looking at the graphic novels - I will try to steer clear of TV references this time as I do think I have over-used them in the pod so far. It will be a struggle though, given that Ben writes them with Andrew Cartmel who used to be his boss on Doctor Who!
@@thefollycast-ariversoflond5979 Richard please don't change your presentation style because some bloke on the internet remarked upon it. It wasn't even a criticism to be honest! I think that TV show lens will be extremely interesting to use on the graphic novels, as that is a much more visual medium. So hope you do bring some of that insight.
@@mansoormurad5400 It's not just you, some people have suggested a drinking game every time I mention 'TV series' or 'Doctor Who'!
The way I read it was that Peter engineered the face off with his mum because he already suspected at that point, and he's trying to figure out exactly what's going on. Will need to re read this now!
I like that interpretation as it at least shows that Peter isn't as gullible as he initially appears.
Can't wait for next ep
I enjoy listening to these podcasts. Sometimes I agree with you all and sometimes I really don't! But that's all about opinion so either way it's interesting and makes me think. My only thought is that your perspectives do all seem quite similar. I do wonder whether having a more diverse panel/bringing more diversity to the existing panel would bring a different dimension to the discussions?
Thanks - yes this is a really good point. The podcast was conceived quite quickly as a project for us to keep in touch during lockdown and we are still around a year later amazingly and actually do have listeners, which is a shock. We checked with Ben A that he was Ok with us doing it, but at that time we did not know if there was a 'fandom' as such and I only stumbled upon a couple of facebook groups after we started. We are recording False Value (book eight) tonight which will bring us up to date so need to think about where we go from here. Perhaps that could involve looking at different themes each episode and inviting guests to give us a wider and more diverse perspective? I'd also hope that in time there might be other RoL podcasts launched as I would be worried if our views are the only ones out there!
Me thinks mayhap Our Albion Island heritage denies to the average British reader the understanding of living in a society that Drove The Jute's Angle's and then the Saxion's To our shore Read it again with the understanding of the BEAST to the EAST and add it to The river of London's Russian villainess love of Killing Also that the river Spirit Nurtured Nightingale for (Three days) to protect Someone who had fought the evil And then try to understand How you might feel if you woke everyday Living in a land that has not experienced Peace for more than 30 years before the next War for a Thousand years And then find fault
It's weird for me that Neil gaiman was mentionned so late in the podcast because to me the worldbuilding pholosophy is very similar to Neil gaiman's, particularly Neverwhere and American gods... but mixed in with a police procedural and a bit of pratchettian love of getting sidetracked.
I do see huge similarities with Neverwhere and indeed that is what first attracted me to descriptions of the book. I have American Gods on my shelf but haven't got around to it - perhaps I should!
@@thefollycast-ariversoflond5979 for my money, american gods is more successful as a novel, in large part because the protagonist is far more active, while in neverwhere he felt a bit too passive for my taste.
It's the Humour and the British understated Emotion Underneath A Cracking good story well told
I wonder, although I havent read the novellas, if he is ret-conning or back filling something that he will later need following the storyline past False Value?
Yes - I think you are spot on. I was conscious in the recording that we haven't covered False Value on the pod yet, so could not be too specific about False Value, but the novellas do indeed lend themselves to retconning as they are set earlier in the Rivers timeline.
i agree that Peter is under a glamour until his Mum attacks Simone and then he contrives for her to give him the information about her past dufing the scene in the coach house. and realises that she is unaware of who and what she is.
Yes it is my take that it is the argument with his mother outside the gig in Camden that breaks the spell with Simone and from that point he realises that he needs to get her away from his parents so they are not in danger and 'plays along' from that point.
Hello, where can I find your recommendations? Thank you

Nevermind, you mention it literally 30 seconds after I posted the comment!
Ha! Actually I talk way too much about Who-related topics, but edit much of it out ( yes we do edit!). Perhaps I should cut them together into a "Rivers and Who' extra episode!
Just wait until we get full bore into the Douglas Adams references.. that's my field.
Sorry commenting as I binge listen. Dont forget the Author's connection to Doctor Who and especially the Daleks.
I wonder if down the line that Lady Ty will end up being somewhat of an End Boss and her plans for London will end up clashing with the Isaacs. I also have a suspicion that Oberon could have a bigger role.
Given the use of long range character evil planning and authors use of long range story telling, any thoughts on maybe Lesley has been in the pocket of the faceless Man since before Punch? Maybe he has put her through training in an effort to get to the folly? It could also account to some of her disappointment in Peter who is flippant towards this work (in the beggining) whilst she is walking a tightrope and having to work so hard because she needs to get to a certain level to be comfortable opted into the folly as Faceless starts to be noticed, only for Peter to run into Punch? Or am I overthinking, it's been a while since I read the books!
I always thought Peter's reaction to Lesleys face is one of guilt, that he feels responsible for her injuries.
I think you are right. On reflection Richard might have been a bit hard on Peter in this episode. As you say his revulsion is as much about his sense of guilt.
Having read the books I would be interested in your take on the audible version....because to me it enhances them?
Funnily enough we had another listener suggest this. None of us listen to audiobooks, so it would be an interesting experiment to listen to (as opposed to read) one of the upcoming books we have yet to review and do an episode about audiobooks per se. Personally whenever I have tried an audiobook in the past I nodded off within minutes, but I have heard good things about the guy who does the Rivers one. Thanks, Richard.
Referring to short stories...dedicated followers bev states in earlier books that she was found floating down it. In a basket...no just floating
I had forgotten about that - so it is indeed similar to the River Lugg baby. I guess we will be hearing a lot more about that in the next book Ben is working on, given the big event that is imminent (trying to avoid obvious spoilers!)
