The Spectral Phase is a review channel talking all about the intersection of visuals and music. I plan to cover graphic designers, gig posters, music videos, and the behind-the-scenes of your favorite album artwork!
Might not always have the same opinions on these things, but I'd still love to hear your thoughts!

Reacting to Matty Healy (Doomscroll Podcast)
Love him or hate him, Matty Healy always has something to say. I'm going to react to a brief segment of Joshua Citarella's Doomscroll Podcast where they talk about the future (or lack thereof) of music, looking at it particularly through the lens of Mark Fisher's philosophy.

Top 10 Indie Sleaze Album Artwork

Ahh, indie sleaze. The genre people can't agree on what it's defined by (or if it's even a genre at all). While I can't say that I'm a huge fan of the new indie sleaze revival music, I do love a lot of the old stuff (Interpol, LCD Soundsystem, Daft Punk, The Strokes)... So much so that I decided to rank the 10 best indie sleaze album covers! Most of these records I actually enjoy musically, but...

This was really interesting. I knew the work, but didn't know any background or the photographer behind it. Thanks for putting this together!
Glad you enjoyed it! Definitely a favorite photographer of mine.
brat- great album cover because it looks like an old aim buddy icon imo 'Sable' refers to an artist that deliberately keeps themselves depressed so they have feelings to pull from. It's also referred to as 'staying in the dark'. We know that the album cover is a not-quite-pink, possibly flesh-toned square, surrounded by black. I think that's the idea. The most basic, naked representation of a person, flesh skin, surrounded by darkness. Compositionally, I think it echoes the 22, A Million cover, which was absolutely loaded with graphics and imagery. So if 22AM represented the maximalist Bon Iver/Justin Vernon, then this is what you get when you take all of that away; just a man, and his darkness. This album is also fairly stripped down, so I think the minimalist contrast to 22AM is reflective of the music too.
I will say from my experience, that Radiohead during Kid A session, actually they did three music videos. The first is Idioteque, where there is just a ModBear walking round and around, the second is Morning Bell, where Bears are playing on instruments, and the last one, the weirdest is with HTDC, where Thom's head is floating over Kid A landscapes and other oddities, then he gets shoot down by an another Bear. Also there was a MTV latin contest for "The National Anthem" unofficial MV, which is obscure and interesting. I also recommend to see "Test Specimens" comic, cause it adds more worldbuilding into this cruel universe, where these creatured are living in...
Did not know this! I'll check them out.
I didn't have a clue about these short clips , Really interesting !
I know!
Certainly deserves a like and subscribe :)
Appreciate it!
Nice video! I think good minimalist album art implies a lot of confidence that the music will speak for itself, or cannot be reduced to images. Which is why landmarks like the White Album and Brat pull it off so well, but if it’s just another typical album for that artist it comes off as a gimmick or lazy. Sable will kind of have to justify having a cover like that.
