A very short extract from 'V' (for MBN and RJ)
On a March morning I walked up to Holbeck Cemetery in Beeston (a route involving a decided gradient for the last mile!) to follow in the footsteps of Tony Harrison and to dedicate a reading of a short section of his poem 'V' to two of my inspirational sixth-form English teachers. The hour being an early one, I found the cemetery not yet open and the gates locked against me but one day I will return in search of the Harrison family plot and meanwhile, here is my thank you note to two of the finest teachers who introduced me to TH's poem nearly forty years ago.
Extract from 'V' is copyright Tony Harrison (1985).

The Collyer's school song, recorded to mark the centenary of the Old Collyerian's Assocation - the alumni society of Collyer's School/The College of Richard Collyer. In Collyer’s School it is our rule To sing our worthy founder’s praise, Who, faring forth from Horsham Town, In London City won renown, An honest Mercer all his days. Toad's Place

'Toad's Place' - an original song by Roger Dalrymple commemorating (among other things) Bob Dylan's legendary four-hour surprise concert at the small New Haven Connecticut club, Toad's Place in early January 1990. Taken from the EP 'When the Crisis Comes' (2010) recorded in Oxford Shonk Studios in Jan/Feb 2010. Adam Bates - double bass Roger Dalrymple - guitars and vocals Quentin Drury - pedal ...
The MPhil Cycle
Переглядів 865 років тому
MPhil Cycle performed in LMH Oxford gardens on 17 June 1993. 'The medieval monastic pupil (and in later times the university student) ridiculed with a clear conscience during the festival everything that had been the subject of reverent studies during the course of the year - everything from Sacred Writ to his school grammar.' (Bakhtin, trans M. Holquist, 1981, The Dialogic Imagination, pp.72-3).
Ah, that pagan land… beautiful.
Delightful stuff.
Please tell me you are in this!
Slouching rather than marching past around 0:39 but this footage really needs some restoration and hi-deffing!
Brilliant tune.
I know how they feel. I can’t let go of it either. Very very nice xx
Sign me up for Toad’s Place Across the street and down the avenue somewhere. It’s got to be the best place They play the old songs and the band is something rare. And when Smith plays slide it carries me To the night we cried in harmony. Pack me off to Fairvale Girl on the mountain there wants saving form herself. She’s fallen for an old tale. The book she’s reading’s better left up on the shelf. She has faith in my recovery From the night we cried in harmony. The night before the questions and the doubts The night that we could never figure out. Put me on the last train Going underground and rolling out of sight. Nudge me with the old pain. Falling out of bounds and crawling to the light. They played the old time songs for free On that night we cried in harmony. So sign me up for Toad’s Place Put me back to first base Take me down to Toad’s Place again.
'They speak of threshing and of winnowing Of digging and of harrowing. But these silly pastimes I spurn. Aye, for the life that e'er doth me please Is the life of ease. With good rich food and fine champagne And with good company always so blithe and vain Singing, fooling and amorous. And to have, when we seek solace, The fair of face, those ladies exceeding kind And all this in Oxford you find.'
Roger Dalrymple What were the original French lyrics? Believe it or not, I’ve been trying to remember them in the last couple of months!
Kathryn Taylor I just found them here: not a resource we had available when deciphering the notation in 1993! ua-cam.com/video/GWyXXnWPAT4/v-deo.html

You pay no mind to warning signs That flicker through the years You've run to ground the doubtful sound Of solitude and fear So shut your eyes on me tonight There's nothing doing here Shut your eyes on me tonight I'll keep you in the clear An airport drive - a man alive Who questions every turn. Recites his lines and marks his time And wonders when he'll learn So shut your eyes on me tonight There's nothing doing here Shut your eyes on me tonight I'll keep you in the clear One last stand, an open hand I long to see your smile And reach the sun and be as one And go that extra mile So shut your eyes on me tonight There's nothing doing here Shut your eyes on me tonight I'll keep you in the clear

He's the lord; the lord of the long run Trying to follow you down He's trying to live out the tale that you once spun Trying to capture the sound You might find you need faith in someone But he's already devout And he's of the mind - if you'll be so kind - To stay here and wait this one out
A pleasure Mark Synth - these modern classics must be preserved ya know. Not since the Wilburys assembled in the LA suburbs was there such a convocation of the greats I swear... The spoken word section is the clincher moment of course... And is there not a further version to be found on your own site?... All best, R

Guess I'm the lord, the lord of the long run Who's trying to follow you down Who's trying to live out the tale that you once spun Who's trying to capture the sound You might find you need faith in someone Well I'm already devout And I'm of the mind, if you'll be so kind, To stay here and wait this one out Yes I'm the lord, the lord of the long run, It took me all of this time All the toil, time-payments and rainchecks They're not worth the climb Until you find a reverberation A foundation that's stout You'll be consigned, time out of mind, To stay here and wait this one out They sent me down to trade at the old fayre I had to talk a man down He's in the crowd, a face and a sad stare A memory's dark frown Someone called for greater conviction Said, 'Take up arms for a bout!' But I never signed so I've been confined To stay here and wait this one out Guess I'm the lord, the lord of the long run Who's trying to figure it out Who's trying to find the keys to the kingdom But who's shadowed by doubt So if you find the headline, the run-down Well, maybe give me a shout Till then I'm inclined, sweetly resigned To stay here and wait this one out Yeah, rest me a while - lord it in style Stay here and wait this one out
