Carol Flavin’s Model Railway Scenics (LocoLadies)
Приєднався 28 лис 2020
I am a Railway Modeller with a passion for creating realistic scenes and dioramas for my layout the Edge Hey & Strines Railway
DECISION MADE - THE LAYOUT’S GOT TO GO! WHAT TO DO WITH MY MODEL RAILWAY LAYOUT?
I needed more space! My 6’ x 3’ 009 layout, The Harland Light Railway(the HLR), was neglected and unused after a house move. I decided what I was going to do with it, and this video talks you through the decision process. This was a difficult decision but I’m keeping most of the scenics I made to use as separate dioramas, and now the decision is made I’m feeling very comfortable and happy with it.
The HLR has appeared in Railway Modeller Magazine twice, first as Track Plan of the Month, and then as a featured articlesix months into the build. It is also appeared in British Railway Modelling with a number of individual aspects of the scenery.

This isn’t the first time I have had to make a decision about a layout. I write was an article in Railway Modeller about the options I considered and this is the video that accompanied it.

It’s ok thanks Craig. Just got lots of ideas on a smaller scale that I can work on. Will you be at Doncaster with any layouts or trade stands so I can locate you?

I know all about this lost mojo stuff. It’s really unsettling. It’s happened to me three and a half times. Each hobby lasting somewhere in the region of eleven years. Each time I was completely obsessed. One of them was model sailing boats.I knew everything about building hulls sails melting lead and so on….up to my eyeballs in mojo. Now I have no interest at all….it’s weird. Thank you for your episode .
@@johnmartin4650 it has been really helpful to hear from other people about this. I feel a bit lost without my railway modelling to focus on but also too busy with builders etc to have time to concentrate on anything. Currently having a new boiler fitted as the old one was too unreliable- and it snowed this morning!
Love you Carol, not knitting as usual or ecpected for female.

@@wolfrobots118 thank you 🙂
Carole, moving house can be a stressful time. Your mind and energy have been preoccupied with more important things. Don’t beat yourself up, your mojo will come back. If I were you when you are ready start with checking your wiring and getting trains running and then go from there.
Front and back doors being replaced at the moment so you are right - a lot going on! May well make a micro diorama to get my creative enthusiasm going!
Come on Carol unusual to see you sitting down we need another video asap
@@johnodonoghue7381 more info next week on my decisions in the next video.
Hello Carol! You have got lots of helpful comments so I don't know if I can add anything. It's horrible being in the doldrums, but they will pass. Don't try to force it. You've made a good start getting the room ready... the rest will come, when inspiration strikes.. I am certain. See you at Doncaster on the Sunday!?
Absolutely. See you in Doncaster. I am now more confident that the doldrums will pass as it seems to have happened to so many people as well!!!
Hi Carol, I'm pretty much in the same boat. After almost 19 months of constructing the work benches around a 10 x 8 shed, wiring up the tool station for repairs, etc, and then making the framework for the eye-level baseboards and then the track-laying (including a decline for underground trains), signals, shuttle line, loco depot, stations, town buildings, scenics, etc.. the shed shifted when the groundwork it is built on decided to re-settle. It created a decline so severe from the oo-gauge stance that nothing was redeemable - so the whole lot had to come up. I now have the work benches and the idea for the layout at waist level but that's as far it has got. Mojo is in hibernation....
@@MaboPete that is a really miserable place to be after all that effort. Sorry to hear it! I put this video on Facebook as well and have had such a lot of helpful responses. Having l read the comments I have decided to go to some more local exhibitions (there are quite a lot up here in Yorkshire) and make a micro layout / diorama to start getting my creative ideas going. Good luck. You probably need a bit of time away and some sunshine! (If you are in the uk that is!)
I have been there several times, its hard sometimes, my advice would be to pick a nice easy short simple project, maybe a diorama and get a quick easy buz from doing and completing something and then pick another project and it will come back I'm sure, all the best Andy
@@AndyHudson-ModelRailwayBuilds thanks Andy. Happy New year to you and yes. So many people have suggested building small and I am already thinking what I could start to do. It is interesting how often this happens to people!!!
Your greatest journey has possibly just begun and that’s possibly just to be for a while. A big energy shift and time of deep reflection as to what really, really matters after all that doing, creation and achieving. The modelling will still be there too, to serve in a new way, once you’ve grounded and as you begin to process it all, as you open up and unload the many boxes of memories and reasons locked within ❤
@modeloco thank you. You are right and I shouldn’t beat myself up and need to work out exactly what will suit me next. Thank you.
Hi Carol. As you know I'm a big fan of a diorama when I exhibit my micro layouts. They're great to get you going and satisfy a 'quick fix' with no faff! My latest one is helping me practice with snow ready for the next micro. How about a diorama? Best wishes.Jules 😁
@@smallworldlayouts thanks Jules. You are right. I have usually built big layouts apart from my Winter Magnorail Village and I am starting to change my thought processes. Micro layouts and dioramas look right for me for the way forward!!
@@CarolFlavinlocoladies Well you know a 'man who just about can' if I can help in any way! Best wishes.
@@smallworldlayouts thanks for the offer Jules. Just getting some new workbenches and shelves installed in about 10 days and then I will get my head round what I am gong to make. Are you doing any exhibitions this year?
Hi. I do enjoy watching your videos and how you make things. Hopefully you will get back into the swing of things. It's a great hobby
@@les-halestation thank you. I really do love the hobby probably just haven’t had enough energy left over after the builders and the actual move to get on with something. Beginning to realise planning a small micro layout or diorama is the way forward for the time being.!
We all go through this! Maybe aspects of some of the necessary tasks ahead are the problem. Set a timer to chip away at it. Vlogging this struggle would be helpful for others! Hang in there, Carol! 💪❤ (She says as she scrolls through videos, postponing the declutter in her own hobby room.)
@@Ye_Old_Bats_Craft_Cave i’ve had a lot of very helpful replies, specially on Facebook, and I’m beginning to think that a micro layout or diorama is the way forward. It’s helped me understand that it’s the creative process I like best so watch this space. I’ll put another video up next week of what I’m actually going to do! As for decluttering.- I’m heartily sick of that now!!
I find small but achievable goals. Little self-contained fireside projects that you can do without a big investment in time or resources. This can often get the fire lit again.
@@carlteacherman194 i’m beginning to realise this is the way forward. To complete a smaller microwave and diorama will be something that I could enjoy and we’ll get my creative processes going again. So thank you.
My best inspiration to go forward on modelling railways is to have a tiny community of different Friends of mine, where we often Post in a Chat various photos, discussing Problems with different engines and make a get together or a Driving Day every two or three months 😉
@@Aviarius that’s a really good idea, and I’m beginning to build up a small community that I regularly communicate with. I am beginning to realise though, that a smaller project or micro layout is the way forward for the time being.. Starts my creative off and it’s something I can finish.
It sounds like you just have a lot to do and its really overwhelming when we have a big list of things. I think the biggest thing is for you not to beat yourself up about it and go with the flow. We all go through different levels of enthusiasm and moving home may have made you emotionally exhausted. I think id get outside for some walks in nature or visit sone industrial places for some new inspiration. Best wishes and thanks for sharing 🙏
@@TXM thank you. You’re right - moving is an exhausting process! I’m beginning to feel more interested and inspired from all the nice comments I’ve had on UA-cam and also Facebook. Going to go to a couple of exhibitions soon and possibly make a micro layout or diorama to get the creative process is going again.
@CarolFlavinlocoladies I have a baseboard for a 009 layout, some track, a few points, two locos and one coach. I can't decide if to start with something simple and be frustrated that I should have done more or build something complicated and get frustrated building it 🤣
@@TXM I was ambitious - partly because I had a number of commissioned articles for magazines before I started it. They still want more articles but watch this space. They may end up being all about taking it to pieces. Good luck though as clearly I didn’t properly finish my ambitious layout!!
Hello Carol. There’s a video on UA-cam on a oo9 layout called Nettlecombe. Might give you some ideas. It mainly looks at village/ town buildings in the Edwardian period. Love your videos. Keep well.
@@Watermillfilms I’ll search out that video, thank you for that. Thank you for the comment about the videos. I think I may well do a micro layout or diorama to get me going again.
This happens to me on almost a bi weekly basis Carol, I feel your pain! The only thing I can offer up, is that sometimes just forcing yourself to do SOMETHING- ANYTHING can jump start your brain into 'modelling mode' - it can be something small like painting a van, or weathering a loco as I've done recently! Hope to see you soon, either at Settle Or Doncaster If you can make it ❤
@@IronHorseRailways I’ve had a lot of very positive replies from people, and I’m beginning to realise that exhibitions are the way forward as are micro layouts or dioramas. I’m planning on Doncaster although not sure which day at the moment. Certainly looking forward to settle. Someone’s also mentioned Narrow Gauge North which I think I shall try and go too. See you at Doncaster hopefully.
@CarolFlavinlocoladies you shall do, I'll be with Sawyer Models and mooching about :)
Dear Carol, yes this is a sad mood at first. So why not trying something "crasy"? Something like "building your railway along the wall" with longer "parade pieces" so it is no longer cramped together on a table in circulars - but driving through oppulently realistic countryside with realy length trains... EDIT: ...or building moduls by FREMO to meet with other modellers to "railwaying" together? By this you can "recycle" all your buildings, trees, and all the rails and creating something complety new! A good prorotype is Richard's Everard Junction Series or Tony's Northeastern Railway with a permanent rebuild of landscape and the step by step exchange of kit to scratch based building from real prototyps. There is a lot of fun and fanatism in this hobby! Due to my massiv libary in a small flat I had to step back from my 0-scaled and N-tracked - narrow gauged railway in a shelf along the wall (for now!). Without rails and chassis the rest is scratchbuild for a freelance company on an hypothatic Hybride's island in the very early Diesel-era. By this I'll get centuripide trains running along the coast on stone, concrete, and brick constructions I have to design. As it is an island I'll show the view from the sea into the island 😊... And with your N-gauge you have allways a plenty of room to play with. So, Carol, look on the possibilities you have infront of you - the blessed space you could fill to your own imagination (and a bit found somewhere else). Look at videos of other railway modelers there are a plenty of ideas still missing: Nobody shows molehills in his hyperhyper realistic landscape or a cat sleeping on a warm chimney. 😂 I am absolutely going to subscribe - looking foreward to your next steps tonhandle this great problen becoming your challange! Best wishes from Berlin, Christian
@@BerlinCardYard thank you. You are completely right. I am seriously thinking about starting again and I can take most of the scenery off and use it for other things. However, I may start with a small micro layout or diorama to get the creative processes going again. Good luck with your layouts it sounds like you’ve got lots of good ideas.
Possibly you may need a new project or an add on project? New Home, New Model? Something fresh to get excited about.. I wouldn't stress however, even someone who enjoys moving house and having a fresh start somewhere will admit, it can be stressful at times. So you may just need some time to get settled into your new home before your mind will allow you to think about hobbies etc. 😊

@@ReddwarfIV that’s a unique response! Pleased it made you smile!
@CarolFlavinlocoladies Thanks! Funny thing is, I'd considered using the ornament for my model railway (its what made me consider looking). But I chose to send it back for a refund, the resin cast had a lot of problems.
@ I haunted a couple of aquarium shops before jumping in and choosing an eBay one. I’ve used 4 now on different layouts.
I made a snow castle from another aquarium castle. Link here. ua-cam.com/video/_nKBHh4KeL8/v-deo.htmlsi=Q7bqQkaO6uYFFZpB
@CarolFlavinlocoladies Nice! Your snow castle is the same ornament I had. Yours is a better quality casting, it actually has crenellations instead of a melted mess. Mine also came badly painted, but red instead of yellow. On the plus side, a different ornament I bought was the same as the first you showed in this video, and I very much liked that one. @@Edlinghamjunction22 thank you. I made it for my grandchildren so it was a very enjoyable activity.
This is a great alternative to using resin. It seems quicker and much cheaper!
It really is a cheap alternative as the look is created underneath with acrylic paint and I like the control of brushing and applying with spatulas. I’ve had a bad experience with pouring before. And it can be very messy!

Your tips are very helpful for me. By the way, your work looks very nice🤩. Many greetings to Great Britain from Thomas 😀
@@Ethenheim thank you and I’m pleased you are finding the videos useful. The next one will be on making a harbour.and the one after that on making a white water river.
I really like the simplicity of this process!
@@Ye_Old_Bats_Craft_Cave thank you. So much less messy than pouring water which has the potential for leaking!
I really like the cosy steeing of the whole layout!
@@apathtrampledbydeer8446 thank you. It was made for my grandchildren which is different - meant to be more fun than serious. Probably why it has been in so many articles and even on the television!
Another fantastic tutorial, liked and bookmarked as an informative resource.
@@simplesimon2802 thank you. Modelling water can be fun so long as it looks real!!
I'm looking forward to using these techniques on a new Swiss narrow gauge layout. Is the fleece you used similar to soft toy stuffing/wadding?
@@attuslebeard5133 yes that sounds ideal. Cotton wool is just a bit too fluffy and isn’t quite robust enough.
@@CarolFlavinlocoladies That's great thanks for your reply - I'll keep that in mind
I get so excited when I see new posts from you!
@@Ye_Old_Bats_Craft_Cave thank you. You are very kind!
Fantastic Carle so realistic
@@mauraking7620 thank you. I really enjoy the scenery side of my railway modelling.
