It's all in the mullet haircut
A deceptively difficult drum groove! Genius!
Buenisimooooo
Squeezing the stick on time with his left hand, what pocket and ghost notes even in 23 one of the hippest
This dude is a great studio drummer for any artist. His skills are unbelievable! He definitely has range and it doesn't matter what genre of music it is...Black Artist out there DO NOT let his color fool you. The man gets down for his crown....Period!
0:08 had to loop that haha
hero status
Have a look at this guys 9000 unit. He's a friend of mine. ua-cam.com/video/NGtlMmUu7og/v-deo.html
Wow
He's the drummer on this track?!! One of my favorite groove songs to practice to. The placement of the hi-hat barks is so sweet!!
Hello.. compliments.. were are you from ?
I hear bits of the drumbeat from Prince's "Kiss" when he's playing it without music. Wonder if this was an inspiration?
Amyzing drummer recording artist. Watch him playing on quincy jones. 75. Birthday
Wow never knew what a talent
great swing!
Nice edit thank you
He’s one of the greatest. And one of the most recorded drummers around.
Please fix, this would be very cool
I can't hear it...
JR Robinson and Jeff Porcaro are the soundtrack of my childhood!!... the best!
Agreed.
Better quote!? Impossible!
Lol
Jim Gordon and JR are my favorites
Jim Gordon was brilliant. Such a great drummer.
Groove master
Amazing
One of the greatest songs of modern history
He plays heel down on the kick drum. That's hard to do, very awkward for me.
The original drum track was made by a drum machine. Check it out
It was a sample of John's playing.
@@eddy71454 no.. it was a linn drum machine.
I can't believe that John Robinson is playing triple bassdrum heel down!
He was encouraged to play that heel down from Ed Soph and it took him awhile to master it.
@@geobaker6403 Do you know who else studied with Ed Soph? Keith Carlock. Who else?
And he plays the snare with right hand?
I just noticed that. It's the only way I've ever played and has taken a long time to develop power and speed the more I got into hitting more solidly. I like it though because I'm not off balance.
@@ididyermom3273 My heel down is terrible, partly because I am lefthanded (and footed) but I play completely righthanded. So my weak foot plays the bassdrum. I even have to use heel up when I play bossa, because I am missing a lot of control over my right foot. 🤕 I hope that I can ever develop a good heel down technique with my right foot. At least heel up is completely fine
Nice jamming ash and ash
Nice job Grant! Without knowing where the "1" is, it's nearly impossible to figure out what JR was doing on the intro. Great post. I read in an interview that JR was tapping this paradiddle rhythm during the session and Stevie Winwood heard it and asked him to record it at the intro. Classic
Ok, I'm not crazy then. Never manaqed to quite figure out this beat.
You see that 80s mullet! Lol.
Many thanks for posting this! I've looked for the "Master Session" video, can't see it anywhere...
Dat beat
Ayyyyyyyyyyy
Heel down playing too
Sweet kick drum pattern. His strength is...what he plays always fits, which is critical in the studio.
The thing about this track is that HE played the track in pieces not the whole kit He recorded the Snare And Kick Then the Hi Hat The Toms next The cymbals and finally the Timbale He did a similar thing on Steve Winwoods album Genius
A lot of drummers do that. I NEVER play full kit track takes. Kick/snare/hi-hat to get a groove with fills and other doubling on subsequent passes. Much more freedom and focus can be targeted that way...but hey, that's just me.
Yeah it’s called cheating - try doing that live...
@@241mrmark Here goes another hater. Why Can't you give the man his due? You talk trash because you can't do it
@@geobaker6403 Ok but JR did Snare and kick first then overdubbed the hi hats. . The pattern also has bass drum triplets .
@@jracerichards I didn't say anything did I ? And yes I can do it .
His left hand hi hat technique is so uncomfortable to watch, but I guess it works for him.
What grip is he using? He doesn’t even look like he’s hitting the center of the snare.
@@vincedelapena Oh....Just Match That!
Genial
YEAH, YEAH, YEAH! Great "JR"... Thanks for this post man.
Grant, concerning your vintage kit. If the wrap is original and you can see no indication whatsoever that badges were ever installed on that kit, it could be that the kit never came with badges. Back in the 60's department stores would order the MIJ drums as an inexpensive alternative to known American brands, in order to satiate the demand of young musicians to create music. Those drums could be ordered sans badges, so that they may be marketed as the store's "house kit" without the buyer noticing any indication of the drum's actual manufacturer (the idea being that buyer was to believe that the store actually made the drums they're buying. A common fallacy of the time). At the time those drums were made, there were actually only a couple of factories that made musical instruments for everyone in SE Asia. While some of the more prominent marketers could specify certain aspects of the instruments, they didn't actually start making instruments (with the possible exception of Pearl) until around the mid-late 1960's. Same with hardware.
Love the ease of the groove.
it's all about Groove thank you JR
Lohnt es sich noch ein Yamaha Recording 9000 serie zu holen ???
I still have this on VHS it's great!! Hope they bring it out on DVD. I have the recent DVD The Time Machine which is also excellent !! Of course with legendary groove like that it was always gonna be great :-)
What video is this pulled from @grantweinstein
Ryan Beydler Music JR's original Star Licks VHS instructional video. 1991, I think.
Famous, not infamous.
Thanks for sharing.. Somewhere, I have this VHS tape along with the accompanying transcription booklet. Would be outstanding if you could upload the rest of this - even for a short while. Thanks, again!
I've been looking for a transcription of higher love forever. There's a lot going on there.
I like the track and the way it was recorded using no other than the RC 9000'S
legend!!! Good on ya Teddy bear x x x
