Moon-forming Rocky Ring Around Earth ( With 7 Minerals! ) | SpaceSim
A ring of 250k particles made of different minerals collapses into moons which collide and interact with each other, eventually only leaving a few moons left.
This is not my first attempt at a moon-forming / circumplanetary disk. It is the second major project of this type for me, I'm doing much more with the first project and hence I am still working on it, while this one I feel comfortable posting as-is. Check my community post that I put up around the release time of this video for more info on the first project. One major difference is the materials, this project has more materials, although the older one included water while this one does not.
Each mineral is represented by a different color. The different minerals have different densities, so denser ones tend to sink toward the center of the moons that form, this is why although the minerals are represented by vastly different colors, the majority of them are denser and thus locked up inside the moons, resulting in the overall yellowish color of the moons' exteriors, owing to a majority presence of basalt (yellow) on the surface, with less common but similar colors green and cyan (representing quartz and enstatite respectively) also often being on the surface, giving the yellowish color a greensish tint as well. I've included below a table of which colors represent each mineral and the densities they got in the simulation, getting the densities right is tricky so while I've tried to give them close to real life densities, they are not perfect. In the table I also include how much mass each material got, the mass numbers are very arbitrary since I wasn't such how much of each there should realistically be. If you know of resources on this subject please let me know. After the setup of this sim I did find that the ratio of iron to nickel should have 5-7% nickel, so I can use the going forward, but I'm not sure what the others should be.
Minerals table, ordered by density:
Mineral | Color | Density | Total Mass
Quartz | Green | 2.65251 g/cm^3 | 0.0005 M_Earth
Basalt | Yellow | 2.95857 g/cm^3 | 0.005 M_Earth
Enstatite | Cyan | 3.23886 g/cm^3 | 0.002 M_Earth
Olivine | Pink | 3.77072 g/cm^3 | 0.005 M_Earth
Perovskite | Dark Green | 3.91465 g/cm^3 | 0.005 M_Earth
Iron | Blue | 7.84927 g/cm^3 | 0.001 M_Earth
Nickel | Purple | 8.91343 g/cm^3 | 0.0005 M_Earth
The time elapsed in-simulation during this video is 14 days, 13 hours, 18 minutes. 250k particles were used, and by the end of the simulation there were 32766 bodies left, most particles had become incorporated into the moons.

A cube of particles orbits a supermassive black hole (modeled after Sgr A*). The cube is torn apart by tidal forces and forms a disk orbiting the black hole. The colors come from the temperature of the particles. This simulation of 30,000 particles ran with the IISPH solver. Let me know if you'd like to see a version with more particles or a longer/slower recording.

In this simulation, a smaller galaxy orbits a larger galaxy in such a way that it orbits a bit around the larger galaxy, disrupting it, and the small galaxy then merges into the larger galaxy. This forms large tails extending out from the galaxies. This scenario is mainly a what-if, as this configuration is unlikely at best. 250k particles.

    How did you do this? Is this your sim that you made? Edit: Sorry, couldn't read the title, SpaceSim. I'm currently making my own physics sim so I wanted to ask how you managed to get the line patterns to emerge as the galaxy spun. My sim is not emergent like that.

    • @physics_hacker
      @physics_hacker 4 дні тому

      Yeah, it's just changing the colors of a regular galaxy in SpaceSim. It's really cool that you're developing your own physics sim. If you release it at some point lmk, I'd love to test it! As for the line patterns, they should emerge naturally as a consequence of gravitational attraction. Because the particles aren't placed perfectly, slight over-densities should collapse under gravity, which as the particles move in a circular motion in their orbits, form those linear/spiral shapes. Not sure why that wouldn't be happening in your sim. What does happen in yours?

    • @theuntitledgoose4193
      @theuntitledgoose4193 4 дні тому

      @physics_hacker well, I haven't yet implemented the barnes-hut optimization so my number of particles is limited to around 1k, thus they can't really be pulled into a pattern like that.

    • @physics_hacker
      @physics_hacker Місяць тому

      I suppose. Spaghettification is really just an extreme result of tidal forces, which this also is also a result of, but to a less extreme degree. It's still resulting in the breakup of the smaller object but in this case the smaller object forms a disk, which isn't really a feature of spaghettification by definition.

      I mean realistically Earth would be long gone. Collided into something or, more likely, ejected out of the solar system. Even assuming that it's fine though, it wouldn't look nearly as interesting since all the action would be on roughly the same plane as Earth's orbit, so it would mostly just look like a line across the sun. Thanks for the suggestion though, I appreciate it
