Combat Jo Staff Kata Practice for Ryu Te

I had a few minutes to work on some Ryu Te kobudo concepts I recently discussed with one of Taika Seiyu Oyata's senior students that I don't want to forget. The kata I'm using as a platform is Jo Jissen (combat jo). This is not the Jo Jissen kata.

That's a good drill
Some similarities to Chinese Traditional Wing Chun. Effective short strike . Fighting off your opponents center line . 👍
Interesting. I am from Shito Ryu (3rd Dan) (also Goju Ryu) I like your style. hugs from Spain ♥ Edit: The version in the End was amazing.
Thank you!
Awesome video and very well taught. I miss Taika. I remember how personable he was. And how amazing he was. Great video my brother
Thank you. Grateful we all had the opportunity to learn from him!
Awesome. Great front-to-back, Maestro!
شكرا جزيلا ايها الاخوة
Awesome. Miss you guys. Keep training-
You are blessed to have that one to one with a martial arts treasure
I remember Sensei Seikichi Odo teaching this KATA . He was very particular on technique and application.
Where are you located? What is your website? I’m interested in learning more.
This is crazy , but very interesting at the same time
Tekki shodan!!! (in shotokan style)
I am impressed. Good video and presentation.
Thank you!
I find it interesting and practical, even pragmatic. Very energetic, no extra spinning, hands always in close contact with jo. Side blocks are something I like very much. This is real combat jo, no doubt. Thank you for sharing this short but valuable film.
Appreciate your comment.
That timing version of that kata was absolutely impressive. Well done!
Thank you! 🙏
Hah! I made the gate on the wall behind!
It still lives in our dojo today!
Good technique. Ich ni san would be helpfull in slower speed, to realize how the technique works.
Whats the idea with these? Is it to keep tension and apply force while doing this or do we have to try and relax while doing it
That’s a great question that has an infuriating answer which is, yes.
Learn
Thanks for uploading! Excellent resource for training
Great to see this, kihon is underestimated
It’s easy to overlook. This drill executes 220 blocks/strikes and takes about 5 minutes to complete. Doing it 5 times takes nearly half an hour and if you are doing it right will give you a great workout and is one of the best ways to strengthen your ukes and tsukis.
Amazing stuff and never before seen. Thanks for sharing your exploration.
I hope it inspires your own discoveries.
good.Please next exercise?
Very good video. Great points. 🙏
Thank you 🙌
never heard of this style
taika oyatas who taught us hw kickboxing champ joe lewis karate
Any advice for those of us that aren't so good at woodwork etc for finding suitable weighted bo/tanbo?
For bo, just find a length of iron or steel at a hardware or auto supply. Tanbo hojo undo can also be performed with a good heavy pair of sai or youth baseball bats.
@@HiddenTeachings Ooh thanks for the info. Luckily I have Sai, just never used them as a stand in for Tanbo
I do my tanbo kata with the heavy tanbo. You just can't do the switching from end to end
Can you please do a video of the heavy tanbo kata(exercises)?
Very nice!
Thanks!
Thank you very much for sharing this nice combat Bo Kata! 👍🏾 I can feel the combat flow and energy in this kata! I love ❤️ it.
Thank you!
Outstanding Kata
Thank you!
Slightly different. We were Shorinkan until Sid Campbell broke away. But it's fundamentally the same. And we call it Naihanchi ichi-dan or number one
At least this shows more of the versatility of nunchaku than the spinning strike! I know a kata that comes from Fumio Demura nunchaku that shows a lot of blocks and traps that you want see in the movies!
Nice - I’ll have to look into more of Demura sensei’s nunchaku trapping. Thanks!
Thanks for keeping the Ryute teachings alive. Jed Oyasato's student here.
Kyoshi Oyasato gone too soon. I didn’t know him well but he was well respected. Thanks for the comment.
This is a nice kata, I'm not too familiar with Jo kata but this was interesting and thank you for sharing this
sexy time. getting me all psyched up now. Kyoshi Cline and I plan on getting together this summer and working on this one. Great working with you at the seminar!
Oh yeah! He teaches it very well. Great seeing you and I enjoyed meeting your guys at the seminar.
Is this a kata taught by Taika??
Jo Jissen is one of the Jo katas Taika taught.
If Taika Oyata believed in it then you should always use it.
Howdy! I am pushing 70 years old and lived in Asia almost 50 years. I lived on Okinawa and studied with the so-called high Masters of Shorin Ryu. One Master particularly disliked Chinese martial artists and had a rabid racial dislike of them! JUMP! After figuring it out I went to TAIWAN FREE CHINA 1978. With Chinese letters of Introduction from my Teachers in California. Then I learned that these Okinawans sneaked off to Taiwan and paid huge sums of cash money to explain to them the kata bunkai that they never learned about and lacked the foundation. Yeah! Watching big shot 6-7-8-9 degree Black Belt Red belt “ masters” getting their asses kicked in GM HUNG’s old Di Wha Jieh dojo was shit loads of fun! Especially because I was a white American who was despite my eagerness to learn in Okinawa, was disappointed and dismissed by the arrogant Okinawan who pretended to know great “ secrets” but got slapped around silly by 2yr green belts in the Old Quarter
In Pa Kua and Hsing I the Open hand training is the highest level of all Ancient Chinese Kong Fu
Fascinating, my own analysis of this kata gives almost identical principles to those in this drill.
Very cool. Keep going and you’re sure to find more!
I trained in boxing for a few years not competing but to Amatur competitive level I agree with you hitting open hand is safer and Arguably faster I regularly practice open hand on my heavy bag ive also done hand conditioning exercises over the past several years just incase i decided to go the punching my opponent route I just always loved punching which is why I personally cross trained in boxing aswel as Okinawan karate 👊
I can see the white crane influence 👍👍
Nice, I like this kata. We don't have it our style, and I've wanted to learn it. Yours is the best teaching video I've seen for it. Thankyou Osu!
Appreciate that, thank you. I’m glad you found it useful
I can't ever imagen how a looser fist could be safer on the wrists/knuckles... Much rather stick to open hand which many don't know how to fully utilize.. Observe different mma hand striking & experiment on various surfaces & it'll start making sense.. Only fist striking I feel good about are back fists
Backlists can be very effective. Also, loose doesn’t mean weak or limp - but I understand the concept is counterintuitive.
Hammer fists can be very effective in they land clean
@@joeblogs-vx4ep Hammer fists aka girl punches XD
Very cool stuff man I really wish I could be a part!!
Whoever is doing the makiwara needs more training. Too extended, lower body and arms not lined up, elbows protruding out, shoulders up, etc. Not being negative just making observations.
I don't know man , it seems like you'll get your hand & wrist hurt, if you actually use that punching technique in the streets
It’s good to be skeptical and I understand you have no reason to trust me. I had trust in my instructors. If you don’t trust the technique then take away one thing: every bare knuckle punch you throw in the gym or on the street has a significant risk for injury. When you train, it’s easy for your larger muscles to develop faster than your wrists putting your wrists and hands at risk. Balance wrapped/gloved bag work with bare knuckle work. Hit both hard objects and soft objects and study the differences in your body mechanics. Be technical as well as physical but never one more than the other.
Nice to learn, thanks!
Truthfully Awesome 🔥 I can see so many grappling with strikes bunkai in this style of nihanshi kata Motobu choki considered Nihanshi to be not just a kata within a style of karate but a style of karate all of its own In general terms we karate people do tend to underestimate the importance of Nihanshi ..
Years ago I began studying karate. We were taught by a 3rd degree head instructor and first degree black belt. When the head instructor demonstrated sparing against the first dan, he started bouncing on his feet, throwing jabs and crosses. No karate thrust punches or back fists. The first Dan tried defending with his karate style inside and outside blocks. He was getting tagged all the time. So when it came down to fighting, our head instructor abandoned all of his karate training and used western boxing techniques instead. After that class, I quit karate, bought a book on kickboxing, and started working on a heavy bag. I never regretted it!
I believe you because experienced this too. When I received my shodan (1st degree) I was told by my instructor : Congratulations, you’re ready to begin learning (karate). If you are learning more from a book than from an instructor, you are probably right to leave that instructor.
Koei-Kan does this also. but our bogu men are starting to get a little worn out.
Ours too! Let me know if you find a good alternative. I have a hard time trusting anything but a steel cage.
@@HiddenTeachings Haven't found any yet. Oh, have you heard about a new style founded by Sensei Eizo Onishi called "Kendo Kaku"? It's allegedly a style that has bogu with no contact.
без практики это напрасная трата времени
I agree - practice is everything.

I wish people would pronounce Nunchaku properly.
A wish is a terrible thing to waste.
