PC Habig Austrian Homburg Restoration
I like a Homburg hat and whenever I see one of a larger size and a different maker that I have seen before I have to buy it and restore it as best I can to it's former glory. This is just one of those hats. I had never hear of PC Habig but through some research understand they were a respected maker in Austria. Join me on my journey to restore this one.

The process of making of a hat and the tools that are used
Переглядів 9121 день тому
I started by thinking I would make a video showing the tools used in making or renovating hats and infact when looking at the footage it tells most of the story about how to make a fedora or trilby felt hat. Its not all the details but an appreciation. When you realise it takes over an hour to pounce the felt and then all the other stages you can start to appreciate the labour of love a custom ...

Restoration of a 40 year old Lock & Co Felt Trilby hat
I just bought this hat from you on eBay! Looks great and fits a treat! I really appreciate the care and skill you've taken to clean it up and reshape it. This'll be worn for many years to come. I'll be keeping an eye on your website with a view to commissioning a hat when you're up and running. All the best!
Hi, thank you for taking the time to right and the review you gave on ebay. I am really pleased that you like the hat. Tonak are undervalued, in my opinion, as they make some great hats and this turned out to be one of them. Please stay in touch and check out my YT videos and website as I am now starting to prepare my own range of customer handmade hats. All the best Paul
The western weight fedora in red/burgundy is a work of art.
@@StuK323 thank you Stu, it was the first of this heavy weight that I made and it fits really well and just feels great on.
I enjoy your videos!
Hi, thank you for your words of encoragement there are more on the way so please continue to watch. Paul
Good luck on this journey !!! Do you have the sewing machine for the sweatband ? Or you do it by hand ???
Hi, thank you for your kind words of encouragement. I do have a hat sewing machine from the 1860's which works ok however, I am looking for a more modern industrial machine for the sweatband and brim trim. I currently sew by hand, I am sure that as the volume grows I will have a need for the machine.
@@Passion4Hats-ev9mu congratulation !!!
Best of luck with the venture Paul. Wishing you every success.
@@johnrodgelatenemusic7262 thank you John for your encouragement and kind words
I really liked your presentation. And I like your "Oppenheimer" hat, so I think that I will now try to find one to buy. Doctor George Whitehead
Good afternoon, thank you for your words of encouragement and feedback. Its great to know that you like the Oppenheimer as an alternative shape it's one for any collection. Enjoy your hat hunt!
Do you have a hat that is shaped like a homburg, but has a flat top, like a "top hat" but not as high? I saw one in a movie and it was beautiful, Victorian I think.
Hi I have something you may like, its a beige colour Oppenheimer hat in beaver fur felt made by Tomaz & Williamson of Canada, but I am unsure if its exactly what you describe. I'll create a review and post it shortly as I am unsure why I haven't made the video already as its such a lovely hat.
@@Passion4Hats-ev9mu Thank you. I'll check it out.
I love these videos on less known classic accessories, such as clothes brushes, shoe horns, hat brushes, etc. My eyes went wise at 30 pounds but with three hats that is like 10 pounds a hat. Both my dress hats (one from Christys' of London) cost me no more than $25 or about 13 pounds each, so it can be hard to pay $25 for a single hat box. What I need to look at is that nice hats are not easy to get around here, so the longer I can make them last, the more value is in them.
Hi Thanks for your message. It's always a dilema for me as to how best store my hats as i have 60 plus in my collection and now the new ones I am making. I have found the blue box in the video and am looking to have it made locally to me and to sell at a far affordable price. You did well with the Christy's hat as here in the UK secondhand hats still command good prices and a trilby in good shape would be upwards of £40. Hats seem to be enjoying a resurgence and now with wider use of the internet and better courier services I think over the next few years it will become easier to find what you want. I am starting to make more of the retro look styles and look forward to see what interest I manage to create. Keep watching as I have more videos on the way. Regards Paul
What hat are you wearing in this video? Looks good
Hi it’s a hat made by Laird hatters called the Alfred, they do another called the American which is a bit stiffer and I also have that. They are my daily go to hats at the moment.
Great video Paul
@@shanewilson4270 thank you Shane, I hope my videos encourage more enthusiasts to enjoy their classic hats and we can keep more of the older ones alive for more to enjoy for years to come
@@Passion4Hats-ev9mu I couldn’t agree more enjoyed the video you don’t see to many videos on the hat boxes themselves
Very nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
so you reblock the hat with the sweatband on it ? I guess that the block is tiner than the normal hat size no? keep doing this video man it's so cool !
Hi yes I re block with sweatband on unless it really needs to be taken off ie it’s damaged or worn and yes I use a smaller block than the original. In fact most old hats have shrunk so in addition I stretch them and leave on the stretcher overnight which helps. Thanks for your support and yes I’ll keep posting.
@@Passion4Hats-ev9muokay !!! It’s an interesting process !!! Thank you !
We call it silver belly due to it being the belly fur from the beaver which is that natural tone of the felt. Resistol makes some amazingly tough hats for work. I highly suggest them. You can spend upwards of 3k on one if your pockets are deep enough
And we also wear them to work in as well. Real cowboys still exist lol
Nice video man, just dicovered your channel and it's so cool ! can't wait to see more videos !
@@EndeisRoux thank you for your encouragement and lovely to hear that you like it and yes there are more videos on the way
Amazing hat. I have one in bran
I have to agree, nice colour selection.
Thank you for the tutorial. Here in Canada we have vintage Biltmore fur hats (that my dad would wear). I just purchased one, brushed it, but will do a proper clean.
That is awesome! I am pleased you find this useful. Enjoy your hats
Hi I believe they call it Loden
What colour is that?
Good luck with this channel!
Thank you I will keep going and also share when I start making hats which should be fun
Do you have any Joseph Wilson & Son homburg hat ? it ‘s rare hat to find. Could you review it for me please
Hi, thanks for your message. No i don't have any Joseph Wilson & Son hats however I buy two or three sometimes more a week to restore and video so I will keep looking. Many thanks - Keep watching!
I have three, two of which are vintage. One of the vintage OR’s is “ranch worn” meaning it is well worn with a patina of sweat and grime. It’s actually very cool and a coveted look as it is often a look seen in westerns. I’ve always called the OR a LBJ hat because he was often seen in one. There is a photograph of Winston Churchill wearing an OR while painting. Enjoyed your video.
@@bk52355 thank you for taking the time to share your message. I love the idea of a ranch worn hat especially when hatters like Nick Fouquet are making hats look distressed from new. It really makes a difference when I hear that you enjoyed the video as there are more to come. Thanks
I’ve got the same hat! Had mine for about a year or two. Great quality from Stetson.
Hi, thanks for commenting, good to hear that you have great taste and are enjoying your stetson. Keep watching my channel as i have more to come. Thanks Paul
I've got my first Akubra in the mail. A grey Snowy River.
@@jonathanwhiteacre7046 hi that was my first Akubra style and I have to say it is a great hat, the problem will be there are some other great styles that you will then want and there you go you have started a collection.
So far I have a 34 year old silverbelly Stetson with a 5" crown, a sunbody palm leaf hat, and a twister wool cowboy hat. I'm a 2 meter tall, 89 kg bald American. I want the hat big, I'm just looking for the perfect style to get more of. The akubra is the one I'm most excited about and wouldn't be sad if it convinced me to get more.
Orvis has always produced quality gear. You get what you pay for.
I agree and enjoy the few bits I own, they have a great classical look about them, I would say investment pieces of clothing
Want to share the thrift shops you use?
Hi yes I am happy to share, I am based in the UK and use Ebay and the charity websites that have shops
I need water resistant and a broader brim, but it is beautiful
Beautiful Hat 🤗including the one you’re wearing 💕love those old Republic Serial (those hats) my grandfather wore Fedoras 😬
Thank you, ah you like the Laird hat I wear as my daily, it has a soft material sweatband and is so comfortable 👍
Good for you!
Thanks Cory
Great hat, quite a find!
Must admit it was a stroke of luck thanks
nice beaver
Thank you for this! Great video. Now I know what I REALLY need to buy.
@@nightshift2780 you are very welcome and I am pleased that the information has been useful. More videos to come!
Really loving these videos brother! Thank you! I've collected quite a few vintage Dobbs fedoras and I enjoy seeing other types. Cheers!
Hi, good to hear that you are enjoying the videos and great that you have a few Dobbs hats as they can be difficult to get in the larger sizes I've not owned one as yet. I am reviewing and restoring as many hats as I can sp keep a look out for a few interesting ones along the way. Thanks
@Passion4Hats-ev9mu You are so right. It is hard to find a good fit. I'm between hat sizes; 7 1/4 to 7 3/8 (about a 58 to 59), but usually anything above 7 1/4 is tough to find. Always happy in the end. There's nothing like a vintage fedora. Looking forward to more videos!
Thanks for your following and enthusiasm. Enjoy your hats.
Great video. Subscribed!
Thank you, I hope you enjoy watching my reviews
Hello, Great Channel, I also love hats. Just one thing, your filming seems to be a bit over exposedwith all te white around you, maybe you could use a filter on your lens.
Hi thanks for watching the video, I am filming using my computers camera so no real adjustment available. My whole house is white and so a bit of a challenge I will try to block light from the windows maybe that will help. If people view and want my content then I’ll buy and learn to use a better camera. All the best Paul
