It depends on the musical texture you are using, the 5 musical texture dictate how many parts and layers you can add. It also dictates the roles of said parts. A song with hundreds of channels is fine tbh but there needs to be a reason for everything it's a contextual matter. Less is more isn't the truth, more is more isn't the truth. If you want to get really esoteric "silence is God talking" air is as in important in music as the other three elements. 🙏🏿

Just found you :) your words and messages are really inspiring and definitely got me thinking since even after 7 years of making music I sometimes tend to fall into these thoughts of needing to add more and more stuff to a project and regretting it at the end because it’s nearly impossible to mix well

Dude, hearing this is like therapy. I can handle about 5-6 tracks no problem and get a decent sound. But then feel the pressure to add more and get completely overwhelmed. Choice paralysis and also feeling the sonic space already jam packed. Added to this you see all these youtube producer bros bragging about having 800 odd tracks in a session, and then feel really inadequate. Thank you!

I've found that because a VU meter reacts quite slowly to transient heavy material (particularly drums and percussion) it's a better idea to use a true peak meter set to infinite hold and get the loudest transients hitting at around -6db. That gives you plenty headroom without clipping the individual channel.. However for more consistent sounds like rhythm guitar, pads, bass etc which are less transient by nature you can set them to average around 0VU (-18db). This is how I typically like to gain stage in Studio One.

Cool video. Thanks. Those per-lane adjustments are very cool. Just note that your mic is very sibilant - might want to de-ess or EQ that bad boy and, like most UA-camrs, you're framed too low in the shot - people seem to naturally position their face in the middle of the shot, but the "correct" way is to have just a touch of space above your head. But, you know, maybe you like lots of headroom... ba-dum-tish!
