Three Trumpeters from Okten Utah - Bugler's Holiday

Jim Jackson, Jim Watts, Dave Blackinton - Lawrence Welk February 3, 1958
Fabulous
Magnífica interpretación y muy valiente por parte de músicos tan jóvenes. La pianista bien empastada en su función de acompañar y llevar todo el peso de la pieza.
Damn. That was a BLISTERING pace
I love seeing them do this on cornets. It’s a shame that cornets became beginner instruments until kids “graduated” to a trumpet. Now I don’t think kids play them at all - pretty much just brass bands.

I'm pretty sure this should be Ogden Utah, not "Okten".
Wonerful, wonerful, wonerful. When I saw they were from Okten Utah I knew it must be the Lawrence Welk show.
Bravo
O---G---D---E---N, UT....Mr. Welk's inflection and accent provides the pronunciation.. there is NO "OKTEN, UT."
In the 50s and 60s i used to watch the Wonderful Lawrence Welk Show every week. I think he meant Ogden, Utah. This was one of many great miniatures composed by Leroy Anderson.
Best thing I ever saw on Lawrence Belch.
OGDEN UTAH --- You gotsta translate for LW 🤠
It is spelled Ogden , not Okten .
Guess you haven't read the whole thread. Everyone knows how it's spelled, but it's classic Lawrence Welk pronunciation that makes it Okten and Okten it shall remain.
@@wattski05 Because he doesn't speak English , it should be spelled correctly . Let's just say that it would be a very good idea .
I love this. My grandpa is David Blackinton. He’s still playing his horn. Great video
He's a treasure!
You should upload a video of him playing the song now.
Yes, in my youth TV was black and white and everyone made fun of Lawrence Welk. I wonder what ever happened to these fine young men.
Phenomenal
That would actually be Ogden Utah.
EVERYBODY knows that!!!
Excellent! The piano too!
WELL DONE!!! that deserved a standing ovation, wow 2 17 yr olds a 1 18 yr old, outstanding!
Thank you
Could this happen today, not sure, hope so...
Japanese high school bands are filled with trumpet players of this quality.
I prefer this to the orchestral versions
man, you guys flat out kicked *ss! Can people from Utah say *ss? Unbelievable job for three kids 18 and younger. Nowadays you'd be playing with the Blue Devils DCI Corps. I'm guessing at least 2 of you went on to careers in music?
I just noticed that the bass player was also playing during this song!
This was hands down the hardest song I've ever learned how to play in my life. Double and triple tonguing notes is HELL to learn. Learning this song has made me cry from frustration more than any other song I've played
i never even came close. was always my dream.
I knew I couldn't come near playing this. 😊
Out......standing!!
Even the pianist had world class timing.
Okay, I loved this. Amid the virtuosity of these 3 young men did anyone notice the pianist. I loved that part too.
Rob Carpenter, you are absolutely right. The pianist was incredible!
This is excellent! On par with the Rafael Mendez rendition.
Nice and clean double-tonguing, but I hate the way they played at piano volume at a the two double-tongue parts that should've been played at forte. BTW, Welk had major problems reading his TelePromTer--and I mean MAJOR! I mean, how hard can it be?
Tank you, Lemon sisters for dat a-wunnerful number.
Yeah. To be honest, he sounds drunk. Especially his comments at the end.
They played the parts exactly as written. WTF are you talking about? I am a professional symphony orchestra musician and we have played this many, many times on our Young Person Concert series over the last 25 years. Not only is the double tongued section NOT supposed to be loud, but it would sound like crap played loudly, like some egotistical trumpet player trying to impress what he thinks are his fans. Please.
Certainly the trumpet-playing Castlemain boys that went to Bonneville HS have to be related to the accompanist.
Wonderful Lawrence Welk had a very definite accent. I understand why it sounded like "Okten" but trust me, we merry band of locals call it Ogden. These three young men were students of the amazing Faye Hansen, I'm sure. Thanks for sharing this!
Such a shame. A Wrong note at 2:35 Not that I could play it though.
I can't hear it.
Sure it's "Ogden" .....but Lawrence pronounced it as Okten so Okten it shall remain.
excellent performance.
Thank you boyss.
Could someone correct this title to read Ogden, Utah (not Okten, Utah)
Your name of Okten gives you the ability to understand people and to merge conflicting viewpoints to create harmony in association. PS - I didn't make that up - www.kabalarians.com/m/Okten.htm
@@pedrojones8238 A national origin is not a "race".
Now this is what inspires me if anyone wants to know! And that lady playing piano is awesome!!!
David Blackinton was my trumpet prof at Univ of Delaware the late 70s. He went on from the time in the video to become the solo cornetist with the Univ of Michigan Symphony Band under William Revelli. He was hired at UD straight out of UM in 1965 and worked at UD until 1981 when he moved on to eventually become the Director of Bands at BYU and retired a few years ago. Besides being a gifted performer he was one of the best teachers with hundreds of competent students. This video is a hoot.
David was my colleague at the Univ. of Delaware Music Department in 1970-71. Although I was hired as a music history professor, David and I played the Concerto for Two Trumpets by Antonio Vivaldi in an arrangement for band accompaniment. Unforgettable!
Blackinton teaches private lessons at Snow college now and is the best teacher I've ever had
That gave Lawrence some kindling to light a fire under his own brass section... That was great!
Love them cornets, too!
Excellence! Thank you. THIS is how this piece is to be played! Great technical dazzle yet with great spirit. Now why doesn't PBS play clips like this??? Watch another fine performance of this piece; search Ted Mack Bugler's Holiday here on UA-cam.
You are absolutely right. The only reason 'Okten' is in the title is because Lawrence Welk's accent is so genuinely and uniquely him.
It is a very common Midwestern or Texas hill Country German accent. Everyone in my family speaks like this. it is not unusual at all.
Thatsa right now crank upa the bubble machine, Louie.
Ummm... He hasa pretty thick accent but I think he meant to say "Ogden". Weber Jr. College (now Weber State University) is in Ogden, Utah.
Can't you register an objection to something you don't like without getting nasty and name-calling?
