Ik this was made 2 years ago, but if anyone is looking for more resources, Id like to share my own personal process for writing books or fsnfiction. I find it tiring when I have to write out the plot or ideas by hand, simply cuz my brain is moving too fast and my hand, too slowly, so I get impatient. I began using obsidian md to combat this, and its very easy to use, you can create a canvas inside your vault which is kinda like a mental map, which is soo useful for organizing your thoughts. For me, mental maps are the best tools for writing book outlines, since in a google document, it can get kinda hard to juggle a bunch of ideas, but if I have a big space where I can put notes and images, and also link them, it's much, much better. Besides writing, I like drawing, so when I sketch a new story idea, I can just take a photo of that drawing and insert it right into the canvas, and maybe create a new note explaining the drawing, etc... its so fast and interactive, so It's very good for writing for fun. Once I get the basic idea and hows and whys and characters out of the way, I start a veeery rough draft which is comprised mostly of scenes, explaining what the characyers woll do and why, the scenarios I have in mind and the feelings or emotions they will feel in that moment. I think writing scenes is much easier for me, I can just imagine them as I go, instead of trying to write neatly with neat dialogue, beautiful prose, etc. If I like a scene and I know it will be included in the book, I can flesh it out and start writing the prose, but it can happent hat I write a scene but change my mind about it. This avoids having to rewrite your book a lot because you change your mind; its easier to rewrite a scene than it is a whole fleshed out chapter. For now this is what I can think of, beside that I draw a lot about my characters and their interactions. I also make moodboards on pinterest with the characters appearance, and the vibes and mood cuz it also helps me visualize.

I'm an 'actual writer' so to speak (not big! but I hope!) but I still clicked! I think it's very cool to listen to the perspective of people at different stages, or with different processes, or simply to hear another person talk about their way of doing things! Even if I don't absorb the advice into my own habits verbatim, it's still enjoyable. For example, when you talked about how you open and added, 'to be a little mysterious' that made me laugh and nod a little - sometimes I get too wrapped up in trying to break things down structurally and analytically to plan, and drown out the simpler, more fun ways of expressing a writer's instincts. 'Why? Well, because it sets the tone, establishes an atmosphere and hints at the world - and because it IS fun to be mysterious!' Reminds me to bring the joy back into the structure :)

for me, I use microsoft word. It does basically everything you described and, when I put my editing cap on, I can leave comments on whatever I wrote that is redundant or might not make sence to the reader, etc. I can share with others too so they can put in their two cents if they have anything to say about a specific passage or line of dialoge. I also do a ton of research. For me, I am writing a historical fantasy (my first real full length book - so no idea if I will get it published or not) that takes place in 1800s china. Trust me, google is your best freind but make sure your sources are credible. For me, that means making sure the person listed as the main contributor to whatever I'm looking at for my research actually knows what they are talking about. For example, I read a translated copy of the Qing dynasty penal code I found online for part of what is now my MC backstory. The author had lived in China for a bit and became aquainted with prominent english (ESL) teachers and those who taught mandarin to forginers as a result. When he came back to the US, he started teaching Law. He noticed that a lot of those involved in forgin law (lawers who (for example) have a client who commits a crime in france but is from australia or the US) were having a lot of trouble when it came to China. He thought making historical records of law (like the penal code) more accessible to foringers might be benificial for those studing that kind of law. I'm an author, not a law student, but I've done enough research to know a guy with that kind of a backround writing something utilizing it that I can access is a plus. Is the part I need it for a small detail? Yes, but my own history education wise had me writing a lot of research papers, so I like finding good credible sources wherever I can and being as accurate as possible about things. I don't do a lot of planning with my stories mostly because I'm the type to box myself in too much just to make sure I'm writing points A B and C in the correct order, and nothing else. But, around the time I finished writing chapter 3, I did make a character outline on a separet document describing the personalities and traits of the main cast and a few important side characters as well as what they do at various points in the story. I use it as a referance when I start to wonder if the way I'm describing a character is off the mark from what I originally had in mind. I'm also writing a historical fantasy, so the map is pretty much just an irl map with place names changed to fit my story. I'm also basing the look and vibe of places largely off of places I've been irl or have seen a lot in media like anime that's of a similar genera. The palace in my book, for example, visually loosely resembles that seen in the Apothecary Diaries and a few other stories I've read that take place in ancient China. The main difference being everything is mostly white when I picture it in my head. Since my stories map is going to be more or less like our irl maps and/or places will look like and be in a similar orientation to places any future readers have probably seen elsewhere already, I'm not going to include a distinctive map in my book. Not only that, but my characters don't travel around a whole lot (thats actually kind of a plot point) so knowing what a place looks like visually and would be like to be in is far more important than understanding where it's located. Imagine if you had to live inside of the church you go to (or another place of worship) and you could never leave. Would you describe where it was in relation to the school you went to or the house you grew up in? Or would you describe things you can see, like what the church looks like or what's on the other side of the parking lot? Sorry for the wall of text. I think your video was awesome and your out here giving really good advice. A lot of this would have been useful if I saw it at the end of last year, when I started my story. I just wanted to add on to that the fact that every author is going to find what works for them only after a fair ammount of trial and error, but that they shouldn't be afraid to try new things and take new approaches, especially if your not yet published in any way. One of my favorite quotes I think that falls in line with is "If you can't find anything you want to read, then just write what it is you want to read." I wanted to read something that kinda said "see this great thing? What are the downsides?" and "See this group of characters who all get along great? What if they weren't also in love?" So that's what I'm writing. There is 1 female character in my story, but it isn't a reverse harem, she develops feelings for one of the characters, but they don't stick together because that isn't the point, and sometimes great couples break up in real life too, otherwise everyone would just stay happily married to their first boyfreind.

I am an actual writer. Coming up with stories is fun. It's like imagining a dream house. Writing a novel is like building the damn thing, all the way from digging out the foundation with just a shovel, building the thing piece by piece, then trying to decide what color paint to use. It's a long, slow, grueling physical and emotional slog even when the work is going well. "Fun" is not how I would describe writing a novel...

I also found out how to use the heading font feature, which u basically can make links for all your chapters in a sidebar so you can easily switch if you need to check something. You just change the font to Heading 1 and you can edit the colour and stuff after if you don’t like it, and you can change the default heading 1 font too which I think is really helpful.

this is so real. something I’ve been trying lately is writing down any scene/paragraph/sentence that I really like or feel would add to the story at the bottom of my document and then creating an outline out of that. so I then put those excerpts in order from the first one I want to appear in the story to the last one and fill in any blanks in the story! I haven’t finished the book yet because I’ve had so little time, but I definitely recommend this method if you’re struggling to make a full story with your excerpts, because it’s almost easier to fill in the gaps when you have this sort of outline 🫶🏻

I read Throne of Glass first since ACOTAR wasn’t around yet when I started. For years I thought I liked ACOTAR better, mainly because of ACOMAF. As I’ve gotten older I have started to realize that Throne of Glass has grown on me with every reread while ACOTAR has been less enjoyable with every reread. For that reason I would say that I now love Throne of Glass more than ACOTAR. The characters have really taken a spot in my heart and I think about them a lot.
