@@richardpaul9760 I’m a 7 and my buddy I start the round with is a 2. I had never played the course before and my short game is sketchy. The two guys that joined us were low single digit as well but were just trying to hit it a hard/far as possible since they showed up late. Thanks for watching and thanks for your input.
Playing here tomorrow morning; thanks for the footage man:)
@@PNW_Sportbike_Life you’re welcome. enjoy! It’s one of my favorites in the area. Thanks for watching.
@@MichaelWogamanGolf we had some nice 20-25 MPH winds that made it tough, but it was a really fun course!
@@PNW_Sportbike_Life #8 is probably the hardest hole in a strong wind, but the challenge is fun. I’ve gotten to play it a few times with Santa Ana winds so all of the usual harder holes are easier and vise versa.

Just sayin... Ventura isn't LA. (thank goodness)
@@wsfarnie and that’s a very good thing. I play out there a lot during the hot months.
One of my favorite courses Mike
@@antwanjtyler8798 I enjoyed it. Definitely need some course knowledge of where to hit some shots though.
Just played it couple weeks ago , theirs a train buried underground (fun fact)
@@antwanjtyler8798 did not know that. It’s was a fun playable course.
I won my flight twice in the LA City Championships at Griffith Park...loved playing there
That’s impressive. Some good competition in LA and neither of those courses is easy. I just played Wilson last week and two birdies wasn’t enough to combat the fact that I couldn’t keep my driver on the planet. Lol. Thanks for watching.
@@MichaelWogamanGolf Course looked kind of scruffy in your video. Playing in tournaments at GP I struggled to get the ball to the hole a lot. Greens had different speeds a lot.
@@JohnDoe-xu2vx looks like I posted it in August so might have been right before aeration. I think the only time it’s close to perfect is for LA City. They were three weeks after a punch and still bumpy and sandy last week.
@@MichaelWogamanGolf I always hated playing any course after it was punched and sanded
@@JohnDoe-xu2vx it’s the worst. Especially if you only find out when you get there. LA City does have an aeration schedule on the website but you can’t predict how long the greens will take to heal.
what's your method of tracing the ball?
I use Shot Tracer for MacOS
I used to play Penmar all the time from the late '70ds through the early '00s with my dad after my folks retired from Chicago to Santa Monica. I/we would come out to visit and I'd play Penmar at least once or twice every trip for years and years. I'll always have a special place in my heart for the course. My dad was one of the regulars there and loved the place. It reminded him so much of the muni courses he grew up playing here in the Chicago area. When I first started visiting them, there used to be a lovely little par 3 in Venice right off the water that has long been sold off and developed. Thanks for posting this video! Since my folks passed away, I don't get to visit LA anymore, so this is a nice little trip down memory lane. Great to see it hasn't changed since I last would've played it probably 10 or more years ago. Oh, and I almost forgot, my dad and I played a round with Charles Bronson and his sons one time back in the early '80s! Very nice guy.
You’re very welcome. Thanks for watching. It was a fun course. Actually the first and only time I’ve played it. I have a couple of friends that live close to there but I’m in the valley so I don’t go over there much. They completely redid the restaurant and have music on the weekends so it’s actually quite a popular place now.
Good vid my friend. Do you mind me ask what app you use for the ball tracer.
Thank you! I use Shot Tracer Pro for Mac. Thanks for watching.
What is a false front?
Here’s a good definition. The term describes a green with a sharp drop-off or ledge at the very front, where the green meets the fairway. The slope is technically part of the green and mowed to the same height as the rest of the surface, but it's too steep for a ball to come to rest there. That's what makes it “false.” Thanks for watching.
It's ok fellas. We were all 28 handicappers too once.
And some still are…thanks for watching.
It was a fun course. I didn’t play very well but it was a good day out with the guys. Sometimes it’s better to just get out and play with buddies than it is to worry about score. Thanks for watching!
I like Rio Hondo, my son lives not too far away from it and since I’m retired now I meet him there about every other week for a twilight round after he gets off work when the days are long enough, It’s not a bad course.
Nice vlog but the lefty was hell of annoying! 🤦🏽♂️ Funny how the worst player in your group talked the most 💩! Should’ve edited him out!
Lol. He is definitely an interesting character. I’ve only played with him a couple of times and I think he was hungover for both. I have yet to see it but apparently he’s really good. Who knows. Sorry he ruined the video for you. Thanks for watching though.
'promosm' 😡
On #18 tee, to the left you can see what is left of Los Angeles original water system. This pipeline once carried water from the LA river near Travel Town to Elysian Park Reservoir. Once Mullholland built the Aqueduct this pipeline was no longer necessary.
Thanks for the history lesson. That’s cool. I don’t think I’ve ever paid attention. I’ll go look the next time I play. Thanks for watching. 👍🏻
@@MichaelWogamanGolf You can catch the remnants of this pipe through out the park including on 17 tee on Wilson. Ive been fortunate to not only grow up and live most my life only a mile from the park, I also work for the city and have spent over 20 years being in the park on a daily basis. Your video was a great find for me, seeing I started working on the Golf course about 3 months ago. So not only by watching your video help my golf game, I am also able to check the course out from an unique perspective. Thanks again and keep these videos coming
@@Imtheverdant1 thanks so much, I appreciate it. I wish I could have flown the drone over the park to get that great view. I haven’t noticed the one on 17 either. I usually have just gotten beaten up by the 16th hole so am only thinking about golf. Lol. Something I will definitely look for. I have to venture out and find some new courses. I’ve vlogged all of the LA City ones and many others around town. Have a great day!
Nice Job Michael. Love the 90 yard putts!
Thanks Avery. I was thrilled to par that hole from way back there.
Most underrated part of a witb: snacks and boo boo pouches.
Absolutely. Everyone carries something. The only thing I forgot to mention was the fingernail kit. Odd I know, but I hit a finger on the cart in a tournament once and cracked the nail in half. I fiddled with it for the entire round taking my focus off golf. If I had clippers or something I could have minimized it so it wasn’t so distracting. So now I keep one in the bag.
Need to relax more in your swing. You can hear yourself holding your breath.
That’s funny. I’ve never noticed. I do know that I need to relax more. I’ve been working on it. It might just be old man grunts too. Lol. Thanks for watching.
Can you recommend me some public courses near you?
Lots of LA City courses around. Encino/Balboa, two courses at Griffith Park, Hansen Dam. Not far away you have Angeles National, Rustic Canyon, Rancho Park. Depends on how far you’re willing to travel and how much you’ll pay.
Let’s get a round in sometime, I am in Burbank.
Absolutely. Where do you usually play?
love that you played the course and enjoyed it! and esp that you posted the whole video of all the holes. Overall, this video gives you a good idea of what it's like playing Rosie on a weekend... surprisingly tough (especially for a muni 9 hole)- and should probably take a little less time than it does (esp for a muni 9).
Thanks Abe. It’s a fun course and was actually the first time I’ve ever played it. I need another crack at it though because as you saw I didn’t play all that well. The price is right and it’s a good walk with amazing views. It was pretty busy that day but I think it only took an hour and a half to play. Thanks for watching!
great video
Thanks Jonathan. Glad you liked it. Appreciate the watch. 👍🏻
They let you take dogs on the course ?
Some courses will. Olivas does. River ridge used to and may again. Ojai Valley Inn yes. LA City courses will as well. You just have to call ahead.
Looks fun can’t wait to try it out
It was fun. Unfortunately I haven’t made it back there but I will soon. Thanks for watching.
Santa Monica is proposing to remove it’s small private airport to build housing with no parking for cars. (As far as we know. It will drive up the cost for the Penmar Golf Course and their customers.
It’s not closing until 2028 so we’ll have to see what happens then.
Not a lot of things get me angry, in life or golf, but I am ready to run thru a wall when I duff chips like on #15 😂😂
It is possibly the most frustrating thing in my life. Lol. Sadly I am so used to it I just move on to the next shot at this point. That’s one of the reasons I started the other channel is to force myself to work on short game more to hopefully improve. It has actually helped a little but I still duff a chip or two every round. Thanks for watching! 👍🏻
Great example of shaft position when addressing a bunker shot. Impeccable form with the desired result!
Thx Corey. It was certainly fun to attempt.
very very very cool!
Thanks Avery.
Good luck getting to scratch. It is a fun grind to get there. I think you can get there. And yes the short game is key to getting you to Scratch in my opinion.
Thanks Steve. It’s going to take some work for sure. Like you I’m doing this on the side with a full time job. So I get it in while I can. Short game is a big piece. Arccos tells me that after every round. Lol.
Good Video Michael. I feel you should have more subs for sure.

Good luck brother. My handicap floats around 18, but it always improves with more play. Scratch party when you finally achieve it!
There will definitely be a party. Maybe we’ll do a TopGolf party and check out the new one. Thanks Corey.
I haven't played Machrahanish, but it's on my list. I think the first at Sheep Ranch at Bandon Dunes, the first at the Old Course, and the first at Doonbeg are contenders for best starting holes among the courses I've played. The first at Chambers Bay is also a nice way to start a round and deserving of mention. I love the Cape design of the hole featured here but a 424 yd par 4 into the wind is a little more than I like to bite off on the first hole. I would imagine it's much more palatable if the wind reversed direction though. If you make it to The Machrie, please post a video there too! Looks like you had great weather, thanks for posting!
I have a couple of friends that have gone to Islay twice but I didn’t go with them. Maybe next time. They rave about the Machrie. I’ve only gotten The Old Course of your list. The first is easy in the sense of the flattest and widest fairway, but the vibe and people always watching make it a tough tee shot every time. I would play The Old Course as many times as you will let me. Bandon Dunes is on the Bucket List for sure. Guys from this Scotland trip are already talking about planning a trip up there. We have a friend that went up for five days and played 36 a day for four of them. Surprisingly no one ended up on the beach at Machrahanish but there were a few that just barely carried it. Lol. Thanks for watching. 👍🏻
@@MichaelWogamanGolf Being in Oregon, I can't help but to admit that I may have some bias, however Bandon Dunes is the real deal. When I finally was able to make the pilgrimage to St. Andrews in 2015, I couldn't believe how Scottish Links courses played exactly the same as Bandon. Same turf, same shot types, everything. True links golf and with 6 unique courses to play there's no lack of variety. My group has been going there at least once every year since 2001, a tradition that I plan to carry on until I run out of days. If you guys are planning a trip, beware that they book up FAST (read "immediately"). Most recently, on 12/3/21 (the day they opened the books for the latter half of 2023) I made reservations for our July & November 2023 trips. The very next day I called back to confirm a question I had on our confirmation email and learned that the entirety of 2022 & 2023 was now booked up. So, I would contact them at least 2 years ahead of time and find out when they're going to open their books for your desired date. Put that date on your calendar and call first thing in the morning when that day comes. In over 30 trips to Bandon I've never seen it so difficult to get tee times, the place is just exploding. Pent-up COVID demand probably accounts for some of it, but I don't know many people who have only gone once. You get hooked. The problem with going to Islay for me will be where to draw the line between playing golf and visiting distilleries. Tough choices! I really enjoy your golf videos, looking forward to seeing more. Thanks for posting!
@@osubeaver9976 you might be a little biased. Lol. But from what I’ve heard it absolutely lives up to the hype. Wow. That sounds like what our trip to Scotland was this year. We were supposed to go in 2020 but couldn’t for obvious reasons but the guy that booked our trip had a hard deadline on changes because so many people were going this year. Especially to St. Andrews because of The Open. I’ll let them know. I’m don’t think they were trying to go 2023. It might be a 2024 trip. But good to know we’d better get on it if we want to go. I’m not a whisky drinker so I’d probably just spend every minute at the course. Lol. I might actually get bored on Islay. Thank you. I try appreciate it. I’m trying to keep up with it weekly but failing miserably. I’m actually in the process of starting a second channel about my very uphill journey to playing scratch golf. Lol. I have a couple of videos shot but not the intro which I will post on here with a link and as the first video on the new channel. Hopefully it’s interesting enough for people to watch.
@@osubeaver9976 if you do make it down to Machrahanish make sure you play the Dunes as well. When we first booked it I wasn’t keen on it. But after playing it I’m glad we did. It is very similar in style to Machrahanish but I found it more playable.
@@MichaelWogamanGolf Funny you mention that your trip was delayed due to COVID. My buddies and I had a 2 week Irish golf trip planned for September 2020 and we were finally able to go this last May. Rescheduling everything was a major pain, but totally worth it. And, much like you discovered, we weren't the only ones trying to catch up on missed travel! Sometimes those lesser-known courses that you only learn about as you research an upcoming trip end up being the most memorable. We played a couple little 9-holers in Ireland that were just a great break from the big name courses that everybody has heard of. Often we had the courses to ourselves while the big boy courses were packed.
Why is this course in the top 10 looks really ugly
It’s actually quite a pretty course that is always well maintained. And on top of that it’s a really good golf course. I would agree that the prime rate is a little high. Thanks for watching.
Nice video and nice swing. Looks like your uploading may have gone wrong. My guess is that you didn't export this in 360p.
Thank you. The swing is always a work in progress. Lol. That certainly wasn’t the intention. I’ll have to look. I could have sworn it was in HD. Thanks and thanks for watching.
Never golfed there but looks lovely
It was pretty spectacular. It was a challenging golf course though. Made more challenging by the wind we had that day. Thanks for watching. 👍🏻
Played with a guy the other week who waited from 8.30 the night before. Imagine waiting that long to play such an ordinary course
The guy that was first in our line was somewhere around that time. Have you played it? I would say it is anything but ordinary. Links golf is definitely a different animal and not everyone likes it. Thanks for watching.
@@MichaelWogamanGolf I'm a member, probably played it over 200 times. It's just a bit straight forward and lacks the challenge a major course should have. It's without doubt the most boring and easy course on the rota. Good for visitors, not up to a major every five years, perhaps every ten at a push.
Ok. I can see that. It is interesting that your a member but not fond of it. Lol. Which course do you prefer in the area?
@@michaelwogaman7857 No, you have me wrong. I am fond of it, but as a club golfer standard. My issue with it is it isn't up to scratch to hold a major. It's not capable of producing enough drama, it's too easy, it's dependent on wind to make it interesting, the greens are too big, the fairways too wide. It isn't photogenic and it isn't a good course for watching. I play it a lot because it's a great place to get a handicap slash as it's rated high for course rating but in actual difficulty it is low. A lot of tourists I have taken on are underwhelmed and come off thinking "is that it?" They often play Kingsbarns, Dumbarnie, Carnoustie, Muirfield etc on same trip and are more impressed with those.
It must be opportunity. I’ve been able to play it twice and like it enough to play again and again but that would be with years in between. Im sure most of the guys that get there the night before might only get the one chance in their life to play it.
So jealous. Awesome video
