Via de la Plata: Aljucén to Casas de Don Antonio- Day 9

Today's 33 km walk from Aljucen to Aldea del Cano was particularly cold. A line of cold air passed through the region, keeping temperatures around 40 degrees Fahrenheit. The influence of the Romans is evident everywhere, with remnants of their past civilization, like the cities of Emerita Augusta (Merida) and Astruica Augusta (Astorga), scattered around. We are still in a remote section of Spai...

Via de la Plata: Day 5 and our 45 km from Monsterio to Zafra

Today's walk was very remote. The 45 km route from Monesterio to Zafra only goes through one village. At the halfway point in Fuente de Cantos, we had to decide between stopping too early or walking another 25 km to reach Zafra. The scenery was amazing, with an unexpected encounter with highly toxic caterpillars.

Appalachian Trail Day 33. Walking into Damascus!
Tammy, Tammy, not me following in love with you after one video. *Clicks follow
I’ll start my Camino next January but it’s Salamanca that I plan to start. I plan to stay in public albergue since I’ll walk alone. I wonder if you bring your own sleeping bags. I noticed that you stayed a couple of nights at the albergue too. Thanks.
Your videos are very interesting and I’m envious that you get to travel with your dear friend. Buen camino 😊
Buen Camino to you too!
Ranulph Fiennes said, “Never travel with someone who wears glasses or a Yorkshireman. The person with glasses will lose them, and the Yorkshireman will always bear a grudge!”
americans should tip, us europeans are tight and we dont tip for lunch
😂Agreed!
Hello Tammy! My name is Jurandyr. I have been walking the Camino de Santiago (French, English, Primitive, Portuguese Coastal, Finisterri-Muxia). Next year I will be walking the Central Portuguese Way, starting in the city of Porto. I want to do the first stage along the coast to Vila do Conde and the second stage to Barcelos. I am subscribed to your UA-cam channel. I want to avoid doing the first stage along the original route to avoid the heavy traffic all the way to Vilarinho. If possible, could you send me the map of the route between Vila do Conde and São Pedro de Rates, as I have not been able to find it in any manual. I thank you in advance for your attention. Hugs, pilgrim.
Hi Jurandyr, I left Vila do Conde and just made my way out of the town and to the interior route on a small road N202. I think I also took another small road to angle up to the designated trail. I relied on the app to help navigate. Hope that helps. Enjoy your walk. I plan on walking from Lisbon to Porto next Feb/March.
Will do next june.solo with my one man tent and gear
Im starting from vigo but not sure how to get to beginning of Camino from the bus stop in vigo
I’m not sure; however the buen camino app has a GPS feature and a map of the city that may be helpful. Plus people were very helpful when I asked.
It was the hostel de Sao Pedro de Rates.
Hello Tammy. Thank you for your posting of your videos. If possible, could you give us the name of the albergue in this segment of your camino? I am leaving next month for my first camino and would like to have as many possibilities as possible. Thank you in advance for any useful advices.
It was the hostel de Sao Pedro de Rates. I will be walking the Camino Primitivo next month. Will walk into Santiago on Sept 21! Buen Camino
Where did you stay in Porto?
I stayed at the Albergue de peregrinos Porto. Very close to the metro and city center. Excellent albergue.
@TammyKraft thanks Tammy. I enjoyed your videos. Where are you off to next?
@@kateg2841 Since I only have a few weeks, I am going to do the Camino Primitivo in September.
@TammyKraft Fabulous, it looks a good camino too. I hope you have a great time
Good travel vlog! Still, I must say…I’ve never understood the purpose of “Journals” except as an exercise in vanity. The minutia of your life is largely uninteresting to others and even less interesting to yourself since most of us would rather LIVE the experience rather than analyze it.
Harsh, but true.
I have kept a journal for 53 years. I use it as a manual of what to do. For example how do I handle depression. I look in my journal to see how I handled it in the past. Oh I had 3 strokes in 2014.
What were the temperatures like in the fall? What kind of sleeping bag did you use? Thanks :)
The weather was very nice. The only chilly day was the first day when I walked in the rain; however, the rest of the trip was pretty warm (upper 70s F). At night, I just used a sleep sack and my quilt. (www.rei.com/product/147651/therm-a-rest-vesper-down-quilt-32) Most nights I didn't really need the quilt. A you will see from some of the videos, some days were hot. However, when I went to Finnesterre it was rainy and cool, but still nice. So excited for your trip. Enjoy and be sure to post pictures!
Most of the servers you meet in Western Europe are on minimum wage and usually on seasonal work permits. So yes you should time.
I agree! Like Donna said, if we have it we should bless others. Thanks for the comment!
Great video, lovely to see lush recommended. We bring the shampoo bars to every holiday. Cannot wait to start our walk!
I’m so excited for you. Please post pictures!
Good times.
What shoes are you wearing?
I believe I was wearing Altra Lonepeak on this walk. I have done several hikes (AT, Via Francigena, and Via de la Plata, Puerto Rico ) wearing various models of this brand. They are very comfortable hiking shoe from day 1 and have a wide toe box.
Hi what shoes did you use?
I generally wear Altra hiking shoes. They are extremely comfortable with a wide toe box.
@@TammyKraft thank you!!
You are so sporty⭐🌟🔥
Nice! The scenery is beautiful. Thanks.
I hate hiking poles. They cause many people to have injuries. Mostly I see people carrying them as I walk passed them.
Hi Tammy, I would like to do the boat ride but am a bad sailor. Was the boat trip rough and approx how long did it take?
I found the boat ride was very calm as we were in the bay which was very quiet and then River. Beautiful scenery of the estuary.
Was it difficult to find your way out of Porto to the coastal route? I’m doing this in May and that’s my only concern is that I read it’s confusing on day 1! Did you find it OK to find the route from cathedral?
I did not have difficulty finding my way on the coastal route. It is well marked and once I reached the river from the cathedral, I just followed it to the coast. I use the "Buen Camino" app for all my hikes because it does have a GPS tracker, so you know where you are and the the trail is at all times. easy to find my way when I got of course. Enjoy your trip. You will have such a wonderful time. Be sure to post lots of pictures on the Camino Portuguese Facebook page.
I just want to thank you for sharing the journey both of you undertook .. I plan to start in the fall when the weather is cooler , as with limited resources available I do not want to get caught out in the heat of the day which can climb to 40c in the summer months .. thank you once more and God Bless
I’m so excited for your journey. That will be a great time to walk. Be sure to post lots of pictures!
Hi! Thanks for a nice ’teaser’ video 😊 How would you compare the road and albergues (opening and quality) before and after Salamanca? I started walking there some years ago and my camino was amazing ☺️ I’m planning to walk from Cadiz this time or choose Camino Portugal.
That’s a great question. I do not know because we only had 2 weeks and stopped in Salamanca. My goal is to pick it back up next year. I think I am going to tackle Le Puy this summer.
Hello Tammy, enjoying your vids, I will be doing the vdlp starting 18 April, wondering when you started last year. Noticed your friend was wearing an orange Patagonia jacket, thinking if I need to bring a collapsible down jacket😊. Many thanks🙏
We started Feb 15. Taking a jacket that time of year is probably a good idea. Enjoy the trail!! Post pictures.
@@TammyKraftmany thanks, will do, as always getting very excited to start and will certainly take lots of photos😊.
Thank you so much for this video Tammy you’ve inspired me! Im leaving for my first Portuguese Camino in April!!!
I am so excited for you! You will have an amazing time. Be sure to take pictures and post them.
@Tammy- you can be alone for several days if you walk the Portugese trail from Lisbon. There aren’t many pilgrims who choose that route.
Such an amazing overview of the Camino Portugués! Really helpful tips for first time pilgrims, and plenty of helpful information spread throughout. Thanks for sharing Tammy!
THX, for the coole Videos.
Can a Muslim walk the Camino?
Absolutely! But be careful because the solitude and peace are addictive. You’ll meet wonderful people from around the globe of all religions and ethnicities.
Anyone can walk Camino, enjoy.
Thank you for doing this video. I especially appreciate your encouragement to have an attitude of gratitude while on the Camino. I like your journaling idea as well. May God bless you! 😃🌷

This was really good. Very thoughtfully presented. Thanks so much!
I’m so glad I found your videos. I’ve walked the Frances twice and the Via Plata is going to be my next Camino. Looking forward to watching them all
Very nice summary of what to expect. I agree with the smart wool brand of socks. I wear them with work boots, and they are truly worth the extra money.
The oranges on the trees in cites are Spain are ornamental and not for eating
Yes. We found that out. lol. 😹 too bad because they are so beautiful.
Thank you for this video-very helpful! 💖
How developed is the infrastructure on the La plata compared to Frances and what is the difficulty ratio?
As you will see from my other videos, the Via is less populated than the Frances. However, we did not have trouble ever finding accommodations. Our biggest issue was the inconsistent distances between towns making it necessary on some days to to either have short day or long days. We followed the Camino app and always had water, food and shelter. It is a beautiful route with lovely people and not very difficult. I'd avoid walking in the hot months as there is very little shade. I only had two weeks for the hike and will return next year! Enjoy!
Very nice documentation of this Camino. I wonder how you did the long stretches without any feet problems. What shoes you wear ? To you plan to continue to Santiago?
I wear Altra or Merrill shoes. That is the most important thing I focus on plus I stop every few hours and take my shoes and socks off. Yes want to finish this. Possibly in 2024.
Thanks Tammy, I'd decided on this 'hybrid' route and so far, it looks great. Still on the fence about Spiritual Variant, so I'll continue to watch!
very nice route magic
Darn, Now I have to walk the Via La Plata!
You will love the walk. So different from other walks. Buen Camino. Let me know what you think when you finish.
Fantastic videos ❤
Thank you so much for sharing your journey. You are amazing with the distances you walked every day. I thought I might take 2 weeks 😂.
Thank you Tammy this proved useful
I wondered if that crocus was a saffron crocus. Then I realized “Zafron” is probably the Spanish word for “saffron”!
Not sure but it was such a pleasant slight.
Where did you switch route? Thanks
My first day out of Porto I walked to Vila do Conde and spent the night. Then, I cut over to Vilarinho using the Buen Camino app and my GPS.
Well done! Buen Camino!
I would love to do this journey. The only thing stopping me are the bedbugs. I don't mind people and I enjoy groups, but those bedbugs are a came changer for me. My only alternative is to book at more expensive accommodations, and I truly wanted to get the pilgrimage feel of this journey.
To encourage you to do it, I’ve done the Camino Frances, Portuguese, via de la plata , and via Francigena and have never had an issue. Most places are very conscientious about bed bugs. But there is also a spray for your sleep sack called Permethrin that works excellent. I used it when I walked the Appalachian trail to keep ticks and bug away. Worked great.
Expensive hotels can have bedbugs just as often as cheaper accomodations. I have walked 5 Caminos and have yet to see a single bedbug. Book at albergues that have bedbug proof mattresses, spray you sleeping bag and pack with Permythrin and check other mattresses and frames.
I’ve travelled it twice and going again next week, bed bugs have never been an issue.
I heard on another UA-cam video the best was to avoid BBs is going at the start of the season when they just open up as they will have cleaned throughout, and bring your own sheet, hope this helps 😊
I’ve walked two full Camino’s, including the Camino Portuguese from Lisbon and Camino Francés. None of these have experienced any bedbugs. I think this is way overhyped externally.
