Watch me as i try to make the ultimate campervan for my family from a 20 year old VW Transporter T5 costing £1500. What i'm lacking in time and money ill try to make up in hard work and determination.
How to fit a T6 facelift tailgate on my VW T5 Transporter build.
The next part of my budget transporter camper conversion is done. In this video iv'e completed the facelift with a T5 to T6 tailgate conversion. Not that hard a job to do and ive managed to do it at a reasonable cost. My maths was off in the video I added it up to £500 but it's actually closer to £600.
Hope you enjoy the video and it helps with your transporter build project.

T5 to T6.1 Facelift and a Vinyl Wrap on my £1500 transporter T5 campervan project
Переглядів 9 тис.Місяць тому
Big change for my T5 diy campervan conversion. I have facelifted the front end from a T5 to a T6.1, i've put the pop top in place, fitted the windows and vinyl wrapped the van. I've done a timelapse and also will go into details on the costs and some specifics on how to wrap a transporter. I will also show all of the imperfections. Wrap i've used is KPMF matt iced blue titanium.
DIY VW T5 campervan electrics including solar.

In this video I will be getting my campervan electrics into my transporter. I am right at the beginning of the conversion so this is just a basic first fix and will need tidying up. Its enough for me to run some temporary lighting and the diesel heater when its fitted. This is a budget van so it is budget electrics. That being said it includes everything, battery, solar, hook up, split charge a...
The £1500 Volkswagen transporter DIY campervan conversion intro.

Welcome to my first video. Reluctantly sold my Volkswagen T5 campervan due to having to buy a house. I'm now starting again with a 20 year old £1500 transporter van. It will be a tight budget diy campervan self build but I have big plans for it. This video is just an introduction to give you an idea of what I'm starting with and what plans I have. My future plans include. Full campervan self bu...
First time watching one of your videos and I am very impressed. The van looks brilliant, well done. Subscribed!
Thankyou very much Dave.
Amazing work, really changes the look of the van would love to do it to my 2004 van at some point.
Appreciate the comment. Hope you go for it with yours.
Excellent. Didn't realise the tailgate was so different on the facelift. It definitely doesn't look like a 20 year old van anymore.
Just got to get the inside to match the outside now.
Great finish again👌👍
Thankyou Martin, I was dreading wrapping the tailgate but I'm happy how it came out.
wrap looks brilliant !! great job
Thankyou. I have enjoyed wrapping but I'm glad I'm done now and can get on with the inside.
Are you selling the old tailgate mate?
My dad is after it, but if he changes his mind I'll let you know.
Your making a cracking job of the ole van. Can I ask about the rear bumper. I've got a t5.1 barn door model and was thinking of changing the rear bumper. I know there different but did the newer one fit straight on your van or did you need to change any of the bits it screws into. Look forward to seeing how your van looks at the end 👍
Mine just went straight on. Top edge clips in, 2 screws in each wheel arch lined up and 3 plastic screws underneath. There are clips on the side that didn't line up but it seems fine without them. I'm guessing the 5.1s would be ok too. I do know barn door and tailgate bumpers are different.
Such a huge job!
It was a huge job, looks quick on UA-cam but each panel probably took an hour to do and then the prep before that was very time consuming. Thanks for watching.
Great job. Also busy with a T5 upgrade. Could you pleased share the headlight wiring diagram . I would also like to use the same wiring but correct the pin position. Would greatly appreciate the advice.
Thankyou Andrew. Good luck with your upgrade. I will be back tomorrow and will get a diagram up and a better idea of how I did the wiring.
Great job. Now I have another option instead of repaint. Could you please give me some advice on the headlight wiring or share any diagram you may have. I also want to swap the pins around and include daytime running lights (will take a switched live from fuse box). And that relay sounds good too. Please advise. Will appreciate the info. 🙏
Thankyou Colin. I've been away for Christmas but will be back tomorrow and will get a diagram and some pictures up. I ran the wiring through the bulkhead to the light switch, there is an ignition feed there for the DRLs and a place to put the relay.
@mattybrawn 🙏Thank you kindly. Will await your reply.
Hi Matty. Trust you well Just checking if you managed to find those wiring diagram for the headlight that we chatted about. Getting a bit desperate now and can't seem to get any help. 🙏🙏🙏
So sorry Colin I've had a mega flu with double ear infection. I will get pictures done but for now the pins should get you started. 1-1 2-x 3-5 4-x 5-2 6-9 7-6 8-3 9-8 10-4 So first pull out purple clip, it just slides out. Leave pin 1 as it is, pin 2 is empty but remove rubber grommet, remove pin 5 and put in the empty space in 2. Then remove pin 3 and put in 5 and so on following above diagram. When you're finished you should have 2 empty slots 7 and 10 and 1 loose connector with a brown wire you can just put the connector in one of the spare slots and put the rubber grommet in the other spare slot. Take a picture before you start incase you get mixed up. This will get everything working.
Sorry pins are wrong. 1-1 2-x 3-10 4-5 5-2 6-9 7-6 8-3 9-8 10-4. It's the same both left and right headlights. I will get a close up picture of my plug done so you can double check.
Not a bad effort mate, looks good. I have been debating doing the facelift on mine but undecided. Your channel is getting a good amount of views for a new channel, hopefully you do better than mine, I don’t think the algorithm likes my channel 😂
I'm a subscriber of yours. Your front end looks great as it is. Algorithm doesn't make sense to me, I've seen such great channels not get views.
@ Thanks mate, yeah I know exactly what you mean about the channel and algorithms!! Van needs to go into paint shop soon 🫣
Amazing job! Would you do a T5 bonnet and if so how much would you charge?
I would be far too nervous working on someone else's car. Bonnet is one of the easier panels to do so I can't see a pro charging huge amounts.
What a fantastic job - love that colour! Mate you have a real talent! I have a T5.1 Caravelle Exec and it’s my pride and joy - I didn’t have much choice re colour as I needed the side wheelchair lift it had but if I had the choice this would be the colour I’d go for 👌🏼 Can’t wait to see what else you do, if you have any plans for a reversing camera then I’ll look out for that footage as I’m a bit unsure about tapping into the rear light for power/reversing signal etc. Seriously though, I’ve really enjoyed all your vids and look forward to the rest!
Thankyou Lizzy. Ive just been doing my camera. Hard part is feeding the wires into the tailgate. Connections were easy enough the reverse power is green with a black line and the earth is brown. Might be different on a t5.1 though.
Great job all round 👍 You are far too tough on yourself. The facelift makes a massive difference to the look of the van so well worth doing.
Well done, brilliant result.
Thank you! Cheers!
You did such a great job, please let me know if your camper needs a diesel heater.
"Hello, my friend! We really enjoy your videos and wonder if you are interested in car radios. We are willing to provide you with our product for free. Merry Christmas!
Prep before the wrap is extremely important and I haven't really mentioned it in the video. When i do the tailgate I will go over all the prep including wrapping on primer
Great job
Thankyou. 👍
Excellent. Great you showed the flaws too. You could of hid them and made us think you did a perfect job.
Thankyou Mark. I think any beginner trying to wrap should expect some bad bits. I recon it takes years of practice to be flawless.
You’re very hard on yourself. I think you’ve done a fantastic job!
Thankyou. I am happy with it just annoyed by the simple mistakes.
brilliant idea for using the fuse box, where did you get the fuse box crimps from and what are they called, if you don't mind me asking as it would really tidy up my audio electrics install and put all the fuses in one place.. thanx for your video's and love the way your giving a t5 new life.. love the wrap and may try it.. cheers fran.
Thank you. If you search for "VW fuse box terminals". They are 6.3mm for the large fuses and 4.8mm for the smaller mini fuses. I think they are only a few quid for 10.
@@mattybrawn many thanx
Coming on nicely
Thankyou Simon.
Nice job done.👌👍
Thanks for the comment Martin.
Thats fantastic, well done for doing it yourself. nice work.
Thankyou very much Billy.
@@mattybrawn You have inspired me to get an old T5 and look beyond the surface and make something beautiful, I just have to convince the wife.
That's the hardest part. I bought first and asked her afterwards. Definitely don't recommend doing it that way.
Where did you buy the face lift kit from please ? Were you happy with the quality?
Bobby's facelifts on Facebook marketplace. He's North Wales though and don't think he delivers. The bumpers and lights are genuine think they are off brand new vans, bonnet and wings are aftermarket but I was very happy with them. They lined up well and had no defects.
I’ve done similar with my fuse box, I ran a single 16mm2 cable from the battery with a crimp on the end upto the fuse box, I then stripped the extra cable to go into the fuse box by twisting them all together and using another 16mm2 crimp, this acts as a busbar. I bolted it together then heatshrunk over it. Not really a fan of them cheap relays I’ve used a voltage sensing one for about £40, they work in both directions so ideal for when the leisure battery is full off the solar, it tops up the start battery. I’ve got 110ah battery. When I fitted by battery I bent some 2mm steel sheet around where the battery sits, this gave me somewhere to mount the fuses and the solar controller in the rear opening of the seat base for better access to replace them. I then covered the back of the seat bases with furniture board. It frees up space in the front of the seat base, I mounted a smaller consumer unit on the side of the seat base infront of the battery. There is still loads of useful storage space
I like the sound of the solar charging the starter battery. I will definitely look into that.
Genius fusebox idea. Battery would be underpowered for me but will be interesting to see how you get on when it's done and you are using it.
Thank you Mark.
Another great video from you Matt, keep them coming.
Thanyou Billy.
Looking forward to this as doing the same soon
Keep watching, even if mine's a disaster you might learn something from my mistakes.
mint van , mine was a mess, dirty mostly but they really do clean up nice.. be good to see what you do, those rails and the seat looks good.. will be interesting to see you fit that and if you can drop any details about where from please.. cheers
Seat was from a damaged reimo converted T5. Rails were bonded into van and were impossible to get out I had to order direct from Reimo in Germany. I've seen them in t4s too.
Good first video, keep them coming.
Thanks for the comment Billy. Should have a video up by early next week.
just subbed ,,looking 4ward to this you know ur stuff bout transporters 😊
Thanks 👍. Still learning all the time. Today I learned not to leave the keys in it. It self locked on me. Luckily Ive got a spare.
Have just subbed👍👍
Appreciated. Thanks for the sub and my first comment.
