How to turn a solid interior wall to a "window" wall - open feel living space
On this Warrior Woodshop field trip, we are taking a solid interior wall and opening up the space by framing in a "window" or opening to make the living space feel a little more open.
This happens to be an interior load bearing wall, so be sure to verify if the wall you are working on is load bearing or just a partition before doing any work. Consult a licensed contractor or your local codes department for verification if needed.

What voltage should you run your tool on? First it depends on what you have available at your shop/garage. If you can run 230v, it will help the tool last longer as it uses less amps and prolongs the life of the tool motor. In this video, we show you how to do the conversion on the G1183 as it come prewired for 115v from the factory.

Great Job gave me a lot of good ideas to tear up my old camper
How does the dot view these conversations. Are they subjective to get recertification.
It is only used for personal use, so they don't worry. Not sure if I would do this for a commercial or business trailer.
Did you screw the boards down? If so, what kind of fasteners did you use?
yes, Tek 2 3/4" self drilling screws. however we drill a 1/8" or 3/32" pre-drill to make it install easier
What type voltage indicator did you use?
Comimark 1Pcs XH-M609 DC6-60V Battery Low Voltage Disconnect Protect Undervoltage Module, I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. After 6 months, it is not working properly.
Man I have a 35+5 and I have a 18x18x48 and I don’t know what to do I don’t think I can put it under the trailer cause it might be to low
these boxes are only 15" deep I think, Try putting as close to wheels as you can, the ground clearance doesn't change as much the closer you get to the axles
Awesome video this is just what I want to do on a stake body truck
You can do it!
Very nice work here folks. We're getting ready to rebuild a 20' flatbed that was originally a camper frame. Capacity goal is around 4000 to 5000 total gvw. Did you all do anything yo reinforce the front of the frame triangle? I'm being told to add a long spine down the center. Seems like a decent idea.
I didn't feel the need since it was only hauling atvs. It wouldn't hurt, however just add more tongue weight, something to consider. Good luck and hope your's turns out just as good.
What size trailer are you using?
that was an 8x20 with a 4ft dovetail, so 24ft total
If it's not to much trouble, could you do a material list and cost?? I'd really Appreciate it and I understand if you can't. I'm almost down to the frame on tearing down one exactly like this and plan on doing the same. This is the best camper trailer conversion I've ever seen. I want mine to look like it was bought as a trailer just like you e done with yours. Great job, incredible job. 👏
I've actually thought about taking an old pop up camper I have, taking the axle out from under it, and putting it up on the top deck. Any ideas on attaching it or any concerns on why not to do it?
All I can recall is we spent about 2500 on materials, but we had to put new tires and brakes on it also. Some steel we had in stock. Lumber was close to $750. I had a lot of the conduit in supply as I buy in bulk. Sold the trailer for $3500, so figure time, it was only a $500 profit, but it was a fun build
@@timscon2001 do you have a shortbed or longbed truck? I plan on putting an upper deck on my current goosneck, I will be using 1 1/2" square 14 ga square tubing, then border it with the 1 1/4" angle as we did on this trailer. Not sure you will have enough connection points as popup decks don't have equal crossmembers, plus there isn't usually enough cross members to support real weight. Not sure if it's worth the hassle. To each his own.
Would this be suitable for a car/truck?
not the frame that came with this camper. some of the newer camper frames have larger box tubing. this one was only 6" rectangular tubing, so maybe a regular car, but definitely not a truck due to frame size
Good looking trailer👍. Looking to do the same to an old 5th wheel I have. Then put a slide-in truck camper up front to make a homemade “toy hauler”
that thought has crossed my mind, however we ended up converting a 32ft enclosed gooseneck into a toy hauler during covid. we can haul 3 atvs or 2 atvs and one utv this way. only downside is dirty bikes in the camper when done with weekend. but we can sleep 6 vs 2-4 in a cabover camper.
We added rails beefed the frame they make awesome homemade gooseneck trailers
I'm being offered for free an old 80s or 90s fifth wheel that is too far gone to be saved. I didn't have a tape measure to I walked it out with my size 13 footwear lol. The deck is 17 feet (with 13 size boots) by 7 ½ foot. It's an old coachmen camper with 4,000 lb tandem axles and a gooseneck adapter already on it. The frame is fully boxed tubing that looks to be 2 inches wide by 6 inches tall with dual framework (2 on each side of the frame) leading up to the neck, looking to be 2x8 channels. Half the camper is rotten and you can pull sheet metal off in certain places to see rotten wood and whatnot. I think I'll pull it over to my place and see what all works and then pull the appliances and list them up on Facebook marketplace to help fund my project. Along with separating all copper, aluminum, and iron for scrapping to fund putting a deck on it, lights, and tires. Any suggestions on where I should start on tearing down an old camper? I was thinking start with taking the AC off, pull appliances, bust out cabinets, pull the slide out, cut the roof into sections from the inside so I don't have a risk of falling through (tossing it outside of course), break walls into sections until it's just regular flooring. Then of course pull up the flooring until it's just the frame. This is on an old Coachmen 251 RL. If you look it up online look for the one with the entry door behind the axles, not infront.
Looks good. How has it been working for ya?
works good as a UTV/ATV trailer. hauled lumber a few times. A buddy has it now, still going strong
If it's not too personal, could I ask how much you paid for this frame? I have one I need to sell, my daughter's husband had it and he has passed away and we want to sell it but don't know how much to ask for it. Thanks so much Judy
This was before the metal prices went up. I paid $600 for the frame, he was asking a $1000. He countered with 800, I said 600 is best or I'm on my way home. He wanted it gone. However the big thing was is that it had a title. No title, most states are really skeptical due to stolen trailer getting called "homemade". IN missouri, you have to show receipts and sometimes photos to prove you built it. Finally, I expected to have $1500 in it, so a $2500 trailer, ended up with bad hubs, tires, etc, and it cost almost $3000 to fix it up with lumber prices. The deck alone was almost $1000. With all that being said, I still wouldn't offer or even look for more than $750. Yeah prices are higher, but so is everything else and I would rather buy an actual utility flatbed for $5k then do all the work to a converted camper for $3500 in costs.
@@WarriorWoodshop I think your input was really on point for your situation. My only input, in oregon, u can find 5thwheels for free. But if I were to purchase today, 600 is very fare
Would a f150 5.4 short box pull this well ? Have trans cooler etc etc .
To move it yes, unless you have the short short bed. It was reasonable to turn with the 6.75 superduty bed. With a couple of side by sides on it, yes. but take it easy. Short answer, yes, but only if you have to. There is an extra 1000 pounds in the gooseneck at least. Stick with a 20ft utility trailer, much lighter, then put one more atv in your back end.
@@WarriorWoodshop Kinda a bummer as it does indeed have the short box crew cab . It’s got electronic brake controller etc etc
@Warrior Woodshop would a 2022 f150 with a 6.5ft bed be able to pull this without having to narrow the front? Looking at a 5th camper to do the same thing to. Thanks
That is a gooseneck
technically it's a 5th wheel with a gooseneck adapter
Got one i want to turn into a car trailer
how did your trailer turn out?
Nice trailer, any updates? I have a similar trailer from a 69’ 5th wheel, looking to weld up some sturdy structure to beef it up.
how did your trailer turn out?
I am looking at an old 38 foot jayco it has 3 7k axles i will be pulling it with my international 4700 4 door truck got a bunch of good ideas from you video your trailer cam out really nice
you can build ramps and load razors sideways at put 4 on
Because of the rub rails and style of ramps you can with this trailer. And I would normally agree with you, however the person who started this trailer only framed out the rails to 7'6" which would make it tight for a UTV to sit crossways. Although it's done frequently, most UTVs are over 8'6" wide which is the max width on highway. Most are like 9' so no one really bothers, but a bored or grumpy DOT/highway patrol officer could make your weekend riding trip very frustrating.
Whats the empty weight on it?
sorry never got to weigh it. a buddy has it now out of town
Looks good
we will have a 6x16 camper frame to utility trailer video coming out in the next couple weeks, working on the build now!
How did you add the dovetail?
It wasn't added, it was a wedge cut in the frame then allowed to fall/bend and then it was welded back together. Finally a gusset plate over each side.

I have a fifth wheel camper that my step father and I plan to tear it apart and maybe use it as a trailer
That is honestly one of the best looking camper/trailer conversions that I have ever seen! Very well done!
thank you. We have a 16ft camper to flatbed on the slate for this spring or summer. One of the phrases I use in class with my students is "If you don't have time to do it right the first time, when are you going to have time to go back and fix it?"
Do you teach welding?
@@godspeedparadeteam technically I am a woodwork and construction teacher, but if a kid wants to do some welding, I don't stop them and show them the ropes. The kid in the video welding is one of my son's best friends, my son is the one cutting the wood, and his buddy is in the welding class.
@@godspeedparadeteam not officially. we send our students to the tech school. woodworking and construction are our official classes but if a kid wants to try, I show them a little bit
That came out great. Good job. I plan on doing the same with a junk camper.
Found a cheap camper might try my had at this for a toy hauler! Few questions for you! Was that frame have a v in the front from factory? Or was it added? And how long was that trailer? The one I found is a 26 footer end to end
The trailer in this video is 34ft long. The previous owner had cut the top back to 6ft wide and then angled the front corners also. I would have not made the slant so large, just a foot back on each corner. If that was the case, then a small utv could have gone up there not just an aTV. The other thing to consider is a lot of camper frames have the axles too far forward. This is to balance out all the liquid tank weights and keep the weight off the tow vehicle for a smoother ride. The problem with this is that if you have too much weight behind the axles, then you get the death wobble. Realistically the rear axle on is where the front axle should have been positioned. Look at your frame, how heavy duty is it. A lot of the frames now are 2x6 stacked to make 12" or a 2x8 box tubing. If its open C channel, I'd shy away. There was more give in the tongue than I care to admit. In the beginning I thought we could sell the heavy duty 20+5 GN trailer. There is no comparison.
I do like this tho
What’s the rough total cost? Not including what you spent on the trailer. Just parts. Nice build by the way!
We ended up putting new tires rims and springs on it. Estimated with wheels was about $2k in materials. Of course we had to start right when lumber prices went up. Before buying the frame, I priced out deck lumber, $400. When we bought it a month later after doing all the steel work, $650. All that adds up!
@@WarriorWoodshop would you be willing to do this on another trailer?
@@kristopherhowell8971 I have 2 in the waiting! They are both bumper pulls. Just waiting for lumber prices to go down. You don't get a cheaper trailer, you get a better built trailer. The only down side is the axles are usually less than 6ft wide, so it really can't be a car hauler. The other thing you have to worry about is the axles are usually further forward on a camper than a flatbed which can lead to swaying if loaded wrong
@@WarriorWoodshop I have a 28 ft I would like to have you do this on. I don't mind driving to wherever you are. Mines a fifth wheel.
You would be able to better place and replace axles, correct?
Is a camper frame like this strong enough to be used as an equipment trailer? I have a farm and need a trailer for hauling tractors and such.
Not this particular one. it only has a 6" frame. I wouldn't hesitate to load a car or utvs, or utility tractor. Equipment such as skid loaders, etc would need an 8-12" frame. Several of the 5th wheel frames are doubled up to make 12" thick which allows them to get over the axles. This trailer had to have riser blocks to get it above the axle.
I would be comfortable putting compact tractors, but not skid loaders. It will haul 10k gross, but not concentrated like a skid loader would be, but bails of hay spread out, that should be ok
It is if it has an I-beam frame. I built one from a 5th wheel camper that had a 10 inch I-beam frame. I've been hauling an 8,000lbs tractor and a couple pieces of equipment on it for about 18 years. Mine is the same dimensions as this one. 20ft flat deck plus a 4ft dove tail.
Good content sir! Shame they dont do metal shop, this would make a decent project for a class lol
This is a pre school year project for these boys since we can't do it during class due to lack of equipment. They like to work and I couldn't say no!
