So I come from a past of...lets just call them "less savory dealings", and I'm here to tell you that the first tip will only stop people that are very new to the concept of shoplifting and are easily spooked because of the affiliated nervousness that commiting a crime for the first time can bring. Once someone has a taste for the craft and has become comfortable doing what they do, they're much less likely to care if you stop them to talk, and will likely even smile to your face and chat you up as though they were your best of friends. This stands doubly true of a person that is gifted with charisma. They may be wearing stolen items and you would never know the difference because of their seemingly relaxed demeanor.

Thanks for watching! Grocery stores requires a different inventory management than other type of retail stores because of the fast turn. You have to be very clear on the type of store/merchandise you'd like to be, and who your ideal customer is, and make sure you're ordering inventory and advertise accordingly. Try to find merchandise with higher markup to incorporate to bring up your margins. If you stick to lower margin goods you'll need to rely on volume and fast turn in order to be profitable.

Thanks! This is great. But now tell me HOW to track my markdowns. When the sale is made and I credit Sales and debit cash what account do I debit for the markdown?
By taking your markdowns on the line item, it will automatically be tracked to the item. So when you run a sales report by class, your POS should total up the sales and markdowns for each class. This is how you'll be able to see which classes are more profitable and which ones are costing you money.

I know this is an old video, but I would like to start a bakery supplies wholesaling company but where/how do I find suppliers?
This is definitely outside of my area of retail expertise, but you'll be looking for manufacturers/growers, so start locally by reaching out to suppliers, then connect with any industry associations (American Bakers Association (ABA), Retail Bakers of America (RBA), or International Baking Industry Exposition (IBIE)) might be a good place to start. I took over my mums business 3 years ago which she had let go because of the crisis we had. I live in the Canary Islands, Lanzarote. I have been doing the business online and have a warehouse set up as a shop with appointments only as I cant open it to the public as a shop.. I also work full time in the evening in a bar to pay my personal expenses (rent, food, petrol etc). I want to be able to open a physical shop later in this year but the thought of trying to figure out what money I should put towards it and inventory, what I need to know before opening the shop etc scares me quite a bit. As leaving my job to open the shop, worries me if it fails and if I should just stick to what im doing now. But I would love to leave my job and do this full time. Is there any advice you could give me? Also thank you for all your videos, they are amazing and have so much information. Much appreciated! Xx

She is right.
At an Old Navy store a few years ago, a clerk went overboard with that forced small talk nonsense. He wouldn’t accept “just looking “ for an answer and proceeded to follow me around the store. I had a few sweaters in my hands but it got so creepy I had to drop them and walk out. Never going back.
Sales people are there to mainstream your needs, purchases to show you possibilities for what you said you wanted. We are really not interested in your personal life, but just being polite. Never say "can I help you?" as they may just say no, so that's why the sales person comes over and just talks pleasantries. Also, we come over to make sure you don't steal anything. I would give customers discounts if they hemmed & hawed and offer gift wrapping for free.
Scripted people do not LISTEN when the customer asks the retail sales assistant a question...respond accordingly
Absolutely hate store greeters, as I come in the door I am mentally going through my shopping list__ then comes the mental wrecking ball! Your not my friend, I don't want you digging into my weekend past or future, If I want help I appreciate you answering my questions, but wait till I ask.

Her example of an open ended question was not an open ended question
I've been in retail for 30+ years. I had a customer tell me he was offended because I told him how much his screens would be to get repaired then he asked if I was telling him because I thought he couldn't afford it. I was so shocked he said that, that I forgot to laugh LOL. He went on a rant that I don't even remember then I thanked him very nicely for his "lesson".. BTW.. He paid over $600 for the screens to get resereened and getting them made new would have been cheaper but he didn't want to save money I guess.
Not good for me either....
I do not want a conversation in the store or domeone lingering around me straightening stuff. All i want is, "let me know if you need some help". If i get badgered i will leave the store.
I hate walking into a store and hearing an unseen, uncaring voice sing out the generic phrase "Welcome in!"
There are retail businesses who don't need the sale and you cannot give them the money and you cannot leave soon enough for them; I could name a few.
Open ended questions - You're creepy as fuck - just stay away & I'll contact you IF I need assistance.
I have to say, I am huge on customer service, I’ve worked all kinds of fields of it, the CSRs that follow and straighten shelves ALWAYS make me feel like they are watching for loss prevention and makes me want to immediately leave.
I dont like overly eager and intrusive sales people...i would walk out being approached by her. People know what they like or want & dont need 'help'...really over the top here.
I am not looking for a relationship with a sales person. Just chill.
You should go have a talk with my youngest sister, seriously. 👍 She's been running a business quite happily and successfully but she seems to have gotten stuck, lately. The store shows no evolution in terms of products - zero attention to sustainability - and she's been getting really negative reviews about how she is treating customers lately, in one case even from a client who loved to shop there. Don't worry. I'll save her the embarrassment and won't "out" her. 😊

Honestly, when someone tries to loudly greet me in a store, it makes me feel uncomfortable and less likely to buy anything. I feel like they think I'm a thief or something. 🤔
Not applicable to German. We LOVE to be left alone. We do NOT WANT small talk when shopping. "Let me know if you need assistance" is a perfectly good sentence over here.
