The Good Portion (Lesson)
Jay Mijares gave our lesson on Sunday about “The Good Portion”, based on Luke 10:38-42, where Jesus stopped at the home of Martha and Mary. Martha concentrated on being a good hostess, while Mary sat at Jesus’ feet listening to him.
An initial reading might lead us to take sides and compare our perceptions of each sister’s level of devotion. There is more to the story. For example, we know historically that both women had heard Jesus teach before. This is one reason Martha decided to focus on hospitality, making their home comfortable and preparing the food. We learn four lessons from the story:
1) Mary was devoted while Martha made her duties a priority. Martha’s gift was her hospitality.
2) Martha wanted Mary to serve Jesus her (Martha's) way. There is more than one way to serve God.
3) Martha chose to work for Jesus instead of communing with Jesus.
4) Martha chose the good portion, the word of God. In the story of the death of Lazarus, John 11:27, Martha says, “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.” She was one of the very few in the Bible who actually testified that Jesus is the Son of God.
Jay encouraged us to consider 3 questions about our service to God:
Are you distracted by many things today? Keep Jesus in the forefront of your life to reduce anxiety.
Does God have your full attention? Keep focused. We need fellowship with others and time to commune with God
Will you choose the good portion? Listen to God’s Word to know His heart.
Life is too short not to sit at God’s feet and take the good portion. His strength will make your service to Him even more powerful.

Different Gifts (Lesson)
Переглядів 8День тому
Our lesson on Sunday was by Michael Rankins who spoke to us about “Different Gifts” - Understanding the responsibility of giving as we have been given. The scripture is Romans 12:6-8: “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is...
The Beauty of Our Future (Lesson)

John Mulligan gave us part 5 of “A Beautiful Life” on Sunday morning. His lesson included three main points on the beauty of “future.” 1) You Know Where Life is Headed. God’s Word is our GPS, guiding us in the right direction. Our faith tells us our future is with God for eternity. I Thessalonians 4:16-17 says, “For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voic...
A Beautiful Life: Decisions (Lesson)

John Mulligan’s lesson on Sunday was part 4 of “A Beautiful Life” - the beauty of choice. God gave us free will and with that comes the reality of hard choices. Fortunately, we can make those choices with God’s direction. John gave us two guidelines to follow. (1) Your Life is Defined by Decisions. You know the deeper meaning of these choices. The best choices aren’t always the sweetest ones. W...
The Beautiful Life of Service (Lesson)

On Sunday, John Mulligan gave us part 3 of “A Beautiful Life”, when he talked about the beauty of service. People search for fulfillment, but often settle for entertainment. These kinds of pleasures are short-lived and keep us sidetracked from service that matters. John gave us three points to think about. (1) To serve is to do what you were created to do. As it says in Ephesians 2:10, “For we ...

John Mulligan’s lesson on Sunday was part 2 of “A Beautiful Life” - The Beauty of Identity. What do you see when you look in the mirror? Do you only see the flaws? That’s only the surface level of who we are. God looks at our heart. In Christ, you always know who you are. 1 Peter 1:3 reads, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth i...

Sunday’s lesson by John Mulligan was “A Beautiful Life, part 1: The Beauty of ‘Meaning’.” He started by playing the lovely hymn “A Beautiful Life”. The first lines are: “Each day I’ll do a golden deed by helping those who are in need. My life on earth is but a span and so I’ll do the best I can.” Many people search for meaning in their lives. As John told us, You Have the Explanation for Your G...

Please pray that the Lord would restore my health. Thank you so much.
Turn, turn, turn ..... (^__^) Nice homily, Jay. Also, I appreciate your explanations of etymology.
A very nice homily, Jay. I really appreciate how you explain the etymologies of words used in your sermons. Agapao and phileo better clarify the levels of love spoken -- and what the speakers/writers meant. Unfortunately when we hear the word "love today it more or less implies physical/emotional love: eros. Agapao: unqualified love Storje: familial love Phileo: love of fellow man Eros: sensual love “To teach is to learn twice over.” - Joseph Joubert (1754-1824) "Homines dum docent discunt" [Men learn while they teach]. Seneca the Younger (c. 65 AD) "By learning you will teach; by teaching you will understand." ~Latin Proverb -- Guy

Jay, your sermons are always well thought out and you present well. I find these sermons very interesting, especially with the background information that you weave when you preach the Gospel.
Nice sermon, Jay, and I like your use of maps. FYI, we Catholics know that Mary Magdelene was the woman with seven demons whom Jesus cured. I have no idea why Pope Gregory I in 591 got her confused with Mary of Bethany and mis-cast her as a "sinful woman;" from what I read he interpreted the seven demons as the "Seven Sins," and the rest is history and the damage was done. Until the 1960s; however, the taint still lingers somewhat. St. Mary Magdelene's feast day on 22 July.

I have a question. Is gluttony still a sin? Or did they take that off the list?

Thank you Brother in Christ for an excellent lesson. You've piked my curiosity to read and study God's word with the premise of his love for us thru our mother's sacrificial love. I'm a Senior Baptized (78) widow worshipping at home and am glad to have found you. God bless & protect all your endeavors for him. Sincerely in Christ love & fellowship...mrs. Thank you so much for leaving us a comment. We are so glad to have you worshiping with us from Eureka! If there is any way we can bless or be of assistance to you, please let us know! We'd love to help!
You have confidence based on your nonsense superstition garbage and argument. We can demonstrate you are wrong at every turn, but that doesn't shake you, because you are convinced of a delusion.
Hi frosted1030. Thanks for taking the time to stop and comment. The Bible calls us to give a reason for the hope that we have. We believe the God of the Bible gives us hope, something atheism can never provide. We believe God has set eternity on the human heart and that's why you are even on UA-cam debating these issues with people. If we are deluded as you claim, we lose nothing. If you are deluded, as we'd claim, you lose everything. Everything. Everything. Think about the weight of that word. We are committed to a posture of gentleness and respect. If you are local to San Francisco and want to engage more on matters of faith, we'd love to connect with you. Blessings to you!
@@LakeMercedChurch "The Bible calls us to give a reason for the hope that we have." Not reason. You just go along with it. Also.. have you even read your fables? They are filled with very poor morality. If you haven't, read it again, and you will find your deity is the villain. " We believe the God of the Bible gives us hope" Superman is a better choice, he doesn't demand that you ignore his mistakes, make excuses for him, or obey him. "We believe God has set eternity on the human heart and that's why you are even on UA-cam debating these issues with people." Do specifically explain why you think anything is "eternal" and do specifically define what you mean by that. Here's a clue: that's a colorful concept, not a real measurement. "If you are deluded, as we'd claim, you lose everything." Isn't that just argumentum ad baculum? Also, we have heard of Pascal's wager, and know that it's nonsense, do you get that employing these tactics weakens your position substantially?
