"Corn King" is a retelling of the John Barleycorn myth in which an effigy of John Barleycorn must be ritually burned every year to ensure a bountiful harvest. In this version, two doomed lovers take a roadtrip across the American midwest through the seasons, until the harvest when the narrator must be ritually sacrificed so that his lover can become her highest self.

what, so good
Beautiful ❤
I've been listening to you guys for years. I love you!
That is so great to hear! Thanks so much for coming back!
Gee that lady got some baggage
The internet lives for stuff like this. This is Gold!
I'm so glad! We had so much fun making it. We were itching to play with other people when live music was paused for the pandemic.

It’s close enough to fall 🙂
Certainly is! Happy spooky season!
The lyrics, the harmony, everything about this song feels like it is the embodiment of the love that the composer has for art and everything it represents. I have no words, congratulations!
Wow thank you! Laura here - I will pass that lovely compliment on to Taylor.
I love that he changed his tie for each voice lol
His fashion genre is classic yet playful.
This is so next level. Unbound by key and we delightfully follow these strange places you lead us!
Thank you Hana! That means so much coming from you!
This is incredible
Nicely done. 🎉
Thank you! This one was the fastest of all of them to put together, as you can imagine.
This was all deeply moving to me. Thank you so much for making it.
Thank you so much for finding it and watching it! So happy you were moved
This video needs way more views.
Is thiiiiiiiiiiis what I've been paying for?!
This video fit the song so well!👏👏👏
Thanks so much! The poppiest song needed the nicest cameras and also the smoke bombs in the forest.
Amazing cover! ❤
Thanks! So glad you found it!
i can just imagine beatrice and wirt singing greg to sleep 🥹🥹🥹
That is the sweetest!
The only problem I have with this, is that I wish it was damned longer. A beautiful rendition, and that's an understatement.
Oh man, us too. We played this at our friends' wedding once and added a bunch of instrumental stuff and sang it twice through! It's just too short. Thanks for listening!
Feels like one of my adhd moments walking around town in a sorrowful haze. Lol. And i adore it!!!
A sorrowful haze! Thanks for listening
Cricket Green... Cricket Blue.
darn tootin
❤❤❤❤❤❤
So sweet and so sad
ugh I knowwww. What a song.
Amen. This makes me feel a little closer to HOME ❤ thank you.
aw yes, we love to hear it! Nostalgia is the most powerful ingredient.
Profound question incoming…Who taught women how to be sad?
I think Anaïs Mitchell said it best when she spoke for sad women everywhere: "And no one taught me how to cry / who am I? / how to cry for what I wanted in the night"
@@cricketblue whooo yeah, she’s always saying stuff the best
Anais our secret shared language like Parseltongue
@@extraHERO So true.
My favorite quality of Cricket Blue’’s music is Laura’s vocals but right behind that is the fact that it’s Chandler safe and always has been.
Bahaha always the first thing I check
@@cricketblue because you’re a professional
woww
Feast for the ears. Congratulations on ten years as a band!
Thanks so much! And thanks for listening!
Incredible work, all of you! it's very exciting to see all of this effort you're putting out come out in such a spectacular way! I can't wait to see whats next <3
Thanks so much! Delighted you think it's spectacular. It was so fun to close our first decade with this, and we've got lots more cooking.
Oh damn, that was beautiful! That was like Cricket Blue, except even more more blaukricketlich! Do we get an epic song from Laura next, I hope??
Hahahaaaa you always make me laugh. You might end up with multiple entries on the unofficial quotes page. I haven't written anything quite this sweeping (or long) but I'll see what I can do.
one of my favourite song, congrats on the 10 years. I'm having chills
That means so much to hear! We know Corn King isn't for everyone and the fact that it's found some of it's people feels amazing. Thank you for finding us.
Wow! I would love to see a full concert!
Oh man, we would LOVE to play a full concert with this setup! Thanks for watching!
extraordinary! Gorgeous. love love love. Mwah!! congratulations!
Thank you thank you thank you! So glad you like it!
Everything you put out sounds so effortlessly whimsical. Love to see it.
Hahaaaa I am delighted it comes off as effortless instead of TURBO. You are so nice. Thanks so much for watching!
I love the wine glass at the beginning
Really sets the scene, right? Harrison Hsiang was so generous to drive up from Boston to play all the weird little instruments for this shoot.
this is beautiful start to finish. amazing work.
Thank you, my friend! That means a lot!
Absolute brilliance!
You are too kind!
This is so incredibly epic and chilling and beautiful 💜 Amazing work! 🌽👑
Thank you! That means a lot coming from the Honey Badgers!
I Still, after countless iterations, get chills …. Just haunting. Love!!!
Thanks, babe. Your playing is an inspiration to us all!
All I could really say is, this beautiful crescendo called the "Corn King", in such perfect surroundings, is what my tattered insufferable heart needed. Always filled with surprises, starting with the sound of the glass harp. Even there's a glimpse of an accordion. You guys keep knocking on the door, which brings me much joy. Here's to another 10...crafted with love, straight from the heart. 💙💙
Thank you so much! We feel so seen when you reference the lyrics like that! Thanks so much for coming along on the ride!
This is stunning. Your voices soar and the orchestration is gorgeous. Congratulations on 10 years, Laura and Taylor!
Thanks so much, Tom! Aiming for another 10+!
brilliant!
Thank you, Ben!
Always amazed by your timeless music!
Thank you! "written in the 21st century, but ye olde"
absolutely stunning! I have goosebumps from this orchestration. I hope you have more pieces from this performance! Incredible work Taylor and Laura 💜💜💜
thank you so much! Taylor arranged this one - it was so epic to be able to play the whole thing with the orchestra for the first time.
Simply amazing. Your voices blend so well together. The song is wonderful and the arrangement simply delicious. If this is a testament to the majesty of your first decade, then one can only shutter to imagine what the next decade holds in store.
Ah thank you! That's so nice! We're working on the next chapter.
The intimate interwoven through epic is made a palpable grandeur in endeavors of such craft & care, and this performance of Corn King is a lovely sensation of this calibre. Well done Laura, Taylor, and everyone who contributed their talents to this project; this was a truly remarkable way to celebrate Cricket Blue's 10-year anniversary! The poetic (qua Aristotle's Poetics) sensibilities which permeate Cricket Blue's musical narratives and meditations shape their discography into (what I find to be) the beautiful paradox of artistic excellence: timelessly classic in the roots of Laura & Taylor's artisanal geniuses, yet particularly unique by living-moment-unfolding & developing for & with listener-experience-within the song's internal & album-contextualized intricacies. May Cricket Blue journey forth as many more years as fits the fancy of its creative brilliance, which always elicits delight! P.S. The end credit framing made the Wes Anderson fan in me giddy 😊
Oh my gosh, the way the tone of this comment matches the tone of the song. Thank you for all of these incredible things you've said! Your comments are always some of my favorites.
Incredible guys! My congratuations!
gracias!
It's so cool seeing the orchestra! Being a trumpet player, I love all the little moments the trumpet gets in this piece
ah, yeah! Trumpet is one of my favorite instruments, that's awesome you play. This was our first time working with the amazing Chris Rivers on trumpet and he did not disappoint!
Corn King is not only my favourite Cricket Blue song but one of my favourite songs ever, so I can barely put into words how incredible this video is to me.
🤝
😭thanks so much! We know Corn King isn't for everyone and we're so glad you found it!
Omg I'm the first one here
#1 🤘😆🤘
hahaha no surprises there. Thanks for coming early!
