I'm not even on social media like that - no IG or Tiktok, or Snap, but I'm going to honest. I'm going to be honest. It's hard to move on when you find a man who you think is a good match. My dad wasn't present and left me to be raised by my mom who I think did the best she could as a single mother. While I think I have decent standards when it comes to men, I fold easily without in-depth considerations for my needs and my fulfillment in a relationship. It's so sad. There's only one man in this world who I've given this energy, and moving past it is hard. It's so embarrassing because I'm doing the work and have no tolerance for this behavior with any other men, but here I am. I hope this is the year I successfully move past it. The women who speak here about their experiences and offer their wisdom are SO CORRECT! We women are taught as girls to be submissive to men, to be desperate to have a relationship and marriage. We attract all the wrong types of men out of stupid desperation instilled in us from a young age. Meanwhile, boys are taught to be self-sufficient, independent and to treat women like their property and their slaves. I should know. It was like that in my family. It was like that in my friend's families. It was like that in my community. It was like that in my church. TO HELL WITH ALL THAT BS! Thanks to the women's liberation movement of the 60s and 70s, I didn't by into all that BS but because I came from a very abusive family where all the men were jerks toward women, I still attracted the wrong men. My saving grace was that my mother secretly taught me to be self-sufficient, to get an education, a job, my own money and bank account. THAT did not bring into my life a good man who loved me and worked with me toward common goals but it did bring me independence. And I'm so thankful for that because, had I been a Trad woman, I would be living in abject poverty at this point in my life. Thankfully, because of my mother, I am now retired on a good pension for having worked for myself all my adult life.

It hurts to see a fellow Filipina crying. My mother was raised in a convent as an orphan. Even though her father was still alive, the Catholic church told him it was not proper for him to raise his own children nor to have a helper in the house to help raise those children (my mother's aunt had offered to move into the home and take care of the children). So my grandfather sent my mother to a convent where she stayed from the age of 6 to 17 when the nuns took her out of school and sent her to work as a maid in a private home. It turned out that the woman in that private home had a son who became my father. My mother was a virgin when she married him. She knew nothing about the world outside the convent and had been raised by the nuns to become a wife and mother. The night she married, when my father tried to have sex with her, she was horrified and ran out of the bedroom into the arms of her mother-in-law. She was scared out of her wits. Her mother-in-law had to sit her down and explain to her that now, this was part of what she had to submit to as a wife. My mother was not supposed to have children because there was an obstruction in her vaginal passage that prevented the sperm from reaching the ovum. My father dragged her to the doctor who then sent her to the hospital to 'fix that little problem'. My mother DID NOT want to have any children either. She had no desire to become a mother. All she had ever wanted in life was to finish school (she loved learning), become a secretary (one of the few jobs available to women at the time) be independent, and learn how to play the piano (she loved music). But she was never allowed to do any of that. Instead, she was forced to have one baby after another. After my mother's 5th child, she went to the priest of her parish and explained that she was 'tired' and didn't want to have anymore children. The priest told her that if her husband (my father) wanted more children, it was her duty to continue to reproduce as her 'husband's will was God's will.' She ended up having 11 children (two died within the first year of life) and 5 miscarriages. She never left the home, was abused in every way, beaten and raped constantly by her husband when he got drunk,... AND us children were terrified of him. When he came home from work, us children would scatter, make ourselves invisible because we were so afraid of him. There is so much more I could say here but you get the picture. I ended up with severe anxiety as a child and teenager and then later in life was diagnosed with PTSD due to the horrors I witnessed and experienced firsthand at the hands of my father and brothers (brothers who were brought up to hate women as much as my father did). It is only now that I'm in my 60s, after fighting my way to independence as a young woman growing up in the 70s (thank you women's lib) and making a life for myself. But don't get me wrong, I attracted all the wrong men because, as an abused girl I had poor judgement as to what kind of man was a decent and good man. But there is one thing I did know, and that was that I should get an education, make my own money, and NEVER EVER depend on a man for survival. That is one thing my mother instilled in me as her youngest daughter. And that knowledge became my saving grace.

I met my husband on a dating app and many of my happily married friends met their spouse on an app in their 30s. I don’t know where that commenter received their dating app stats but they sound inaccurate.
