Virginia Needs A Second Chance: Paulettra James
“Everybody’s just ready for him to come home, and it’s time for him to come home, because he’s just serving no purpose sitting in prison.” - Paulettra James, loved one of an incarcerated person
Paulettra James is a storyteller in the ACLU-VA's Virginia Needs A Second Chance, a multimedia storytelling project that seeks to change the narrative about people who are or have been incarcerated.
From Hampton to Richmond, from South Boston to Christiansburg, the exhibit features eight storytellers who’ve been touched by the Virginia prison system. No one should be defined by their worst mistake -- and everyone deserves a second chance.

I was eligible for parole at 12 yrs, statistics show release at 14/15, but Governor Allen's swipe of the pen kept me there for 27 yrs. I was old law. Only got parole AFTER the standing parole board was fired and replaced.

The problem is that democrats and their pals in the ACLU don 't have any values. Whatever gets them political power is all they care about. Time to clean house at these school boards and bring in some people that have the good of the students as their main concern.

If you want racism to truly be over, then that word should mean nothing woman of COLOR, you should just say as a woman get rid of the COLOR part, then your vote will mean the same thing as the rest of the people, if being a person of COLOR means more than someone that’s not, then that is flipping racism around it’s still racism.

I would like to know who fights for the VICTIM'S RIGHTS in Virginia? Criminals seem to be in and out of jail so quickly that there is NO deterrant to the criminal lifestyle. We have SO MANY repeat offenders and the worst thing that happens is that they get a slap on the wrist.

Aren't all lands in the world indigenous lands? Weren't all civilizations fighting for land and resources? Didn't the Roman's enslave Germanic tribes and called them barbarians? Europe itself is a mixture of different barbarian tribes that took over Roman land. The Vandals, Goths and Visigoths that later became countries. The Natives of the America's sadly did not have the military technology or antibodies to fight the migration of so many Europeans, first conquering for riches then fleeing kingdoms with absurd religious and political systems. Human migration happens. Don't judge people in the past for things they did not know about at all. These people had a complete different mindset and were trying to survive like all humans. If the Natives would have had the better technology and antibodies they would have probably conquered Europe. Not 1 person alive today is responsible for what happened in the past and we have all been hurt by it but also benefited from it. Get over the past and make the future a great peaceful loving place. White wokies love to remind minorities of the struggle. We know our struggles ya'll ain't helping by constantly bringing it up trying to give us a handicap. We can compete with out the sympathy. It's getting offensive at this point.

If you want to end the school to prison pipeline, I think you should add a mandatory criminal justice course to the high school curriculum just as you have sex Ed or drivers classes, there is nothing to tell students what happens due to contact with the criminal justice system. Life in Virginia and all the USA or any capitalism is a high risk situation, but nobody is warned of that when they are entering it. Relying on parents to teach this information to kids is not working, especially if the parents and community members are modeling the criminal behavior at home and already have an altered future because of it.

    • @XtineJohnes

Predators like police, courts, judges, scared straight programs, prison industries etc rely on a steady stream of uninformed or underinformed victims coming in and out of the system that gives them a paycheck. If the victims are tipped off beforehand, there would be a drastic reduction in their numbers, leading to less “professionals” preying on this population for their livelihood.
