Diving the Kelp Forest of Catalina (4K)
Santa Catalina Island holds a breathtaking underwater jungle; pillars of kelp that grow from the sea floor all the way to the surface. Weaving through the forest you might find the biggest bony fish you've ever seen...500+ lb giant black sea bass!

Super quality video! I love it!
Thank you!
Stay weird, Lembeh strait!
Beautiful photography! Thank you for sharing
Beautiful!
Amazing work! love many of the shots!
Thanks so much! 🙏
I grew up on catalina. Ive had giant black sea bass try to steal many a yellowtale while out spearfishing. Great shot man.
That would be quite a sight! They’re usually so mellow, but they can definitely get moving when they want to. Thanks!
Love!!!
Nice! Looks like a beautiful place to dive. Using the white balance card again? The natural color was awesome!
Thanks! Yeah I did my best to manually white balance throughout. The lighting in the kelp felt so dramatic I didn’t opt for the video lights this time around 👍
@BronsonFE yes it looks excellent. What ISO and aperture were you at? If you don't mind sharing? Headed to Port Hardy next week and want to get some epic kelp shots.
@@scubabc6701 I varied the Fstop quite a bit shot to shot, most starting in the F8-11 range. I closed things down to F20+ range at times for sunbeam shots. ISO I kept consistent at 12800. Hope that helps! Port Hardy will be a blast, excited to see what you get 🤙
That was so good! I really love the segment with the coconut octopi. Very fun to watch.
wow , sunflower star fish !!! healthy ALIVE and making a come back .... would love to see them again at Edmonds and Mukilteo , And dont forget our San Juan Islands
Amazing video! Do you do underwater photography as well?
Hey thank you! I’ll take stills here and there but mostly like to spend time on video
Blue water! ❤️❤️❤️ Looks like another great trip!
It was! Once we got out of the snow and into the water 😂
Fricken awesome video man. How may dives to take all these clips?
Thanks! I did about 24 dives over the course of my stay. There’s amazing creatures and moments on every dive.
This should inspire all divers to be come coldwater drysuit divers. Great video!
Good stuff Bronson! Nice edit!
That male sea lion at 0:50 is huge. Great video, but it's missing the snowstorm :)
He was a monster. Hah I know, I wish I took some above-shots, but in the moment my only focus was cocooning from the elements
STUNNING!
Wow this is excellent! Really great shooting! I’d love to hear what lens you are using for these wide shots 🤩
Thanks man, much appreciated! I use Sony’s 28-60 kit lens behind Nauticam WWL-1B optic for wide angle. It gives some nice flexibility for sure!
Really nice! Loved that speed ramp with the sea lions and the beat drop at like :50, so good! I shoot an A7Siii too, would be interested in comparing some notes! What are you using for a lens? It looks like you're doing a lot of manual white balancing. What are you using to white balance on some of the wide angle shots? Are you shooting in SLOG3? Manual ISO? Sorry for all the questions, not many of us shooting this camera underwater! Shoot me a message next time you're up in Nanoose!
Thank you! I shoot manual white balance with a WhiBal G7 card, and attempt to stay on top of updating with depth changes the best I can. I’ll tweak in post as needed. SLOG3, so far manual ISO at 12800 almost exclusively in the dimmer local water. Your videos are fantastic, I’d love to compare more notes. I’m still relatively new to the setup. I’ll reach out on IG to chat more 👌
Beautiful
very nice shots
great shots
Nice video ❤
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Top Aufnahmen. Schönes Video👌 Gefällt mir sehr 👍
Great video! We are planning a dive trip there in July. Did you use a macro lens to capture these smaller critters?
Thanks! You’ll have a great time. I used an Olympus TG6 for the majority of the shots, which is a compact that takes nice macro without an extra lens. If you have a mirrorless or dslr camera you’ll definitely want a dedicated macro lens for the trip 👍.
Thank you
Fantastic videos! May I ask which settings you used? One or two video lights? Again beautiful video!
@@moolo1061 thanks! I use 2 video lights for the vast majority of shots. Backscatter has a great resource for TG6 camera settings, I’d recommend giving it look 👌 www.backscatter.com/reviews/post/Olympus-TG-6-Best-Underwater-Camera-Settings
Amazing macro and action sequences...looks like you got all the grails 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻
Kereeeeen.. Thank you for the upload
Wow, impressive work and cool critters. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you!
How many dives did you do to capture this footage?
@@czele123 24 dives during our stay. And certainly saw much more than what’s cut into the video 🤙
@@BronsonFE Great to hear so much to see there. Just can’t decide on muck in Lembeh without the beauty of reefs. But it looks like great experience.
Hello. Wich camera did you use, wich settings, wich lights? Thanks
Hi, I used an Olympus TG6 for macro and GoPro 10 for wide angle shots. Two Sola 1200s for lighting. For settings, I recommend checking out @backscatteruw or backscatter.com - they put together some great settings videos and guides.
Some very special macro finds...two thumbs up 👍👍
Impressive work! I would not think it would be so colourful and lively.
Thanks! Vancouver Island has some of our all-time favorite diving 🤙
@@BronsonFE Thanks. What is the water temperature? What suit is required?
@@czele123 The water temp ranges from mid 40s to low 50s Fahrenheit. You can get by in a thick 2-piece wetsuit, but a drysuit is really the way to go for regular or repetitive diving.
@@BronsonFE Huh, very cold. Tempted to try but my old bones would appreciate warm water like in your Anilao video 🙂.
So far this is the best among the videos in Anilaol
Thanks so much! Amazing place to dive.
Watched this video today from Jon's phone in UWS Seattle, it is awesome!
Hey thanks for the nice words!
So Awesome! Great job editing.
Great shots!
Great video!! Such a beautiful place to dive! 🎉
This is a masterclass on underwater videography. Amazing!
Thanks for the kind words! Much appreciated.
The footage of the sand falling on the grunt sculpin is kinda neat. Was it a clay wall of sorts?
The little fella was in a nook at the base of a piling. I believe a crab was getting rambunctious above, making the sand rain ha
Superb!!
Fantastic video, amazing quality and details in the macro. What camera you using? Will be in Buceo in apr '23, can't wait!
Hey thank you so much! This was shot with an Olympus TG6 for macro and GoPro 10 for wide angle. You’ll absolutely love Buceo 🤙
@@BronsonFE That's amazing! So well done. Yeah will post updates after Buceo visit. ;-)
Great stuff, how many dives did u do there?
Thanks! We dove 4x per day for a week 👌
What an amazing video! Thanks
That little octopus!! What a cutie!
Fantastic dive video! Looking forward to more
Cool Video! Ive always wanted to see Browning Pass a little extra motivation to make it happen one day, thanks for sharing!
Excellent video!! Love the red Irish lords and the little mossy!
Abos-fricken-lutely amazing! Loved the shots of the octo! So good.
Awesome vdo Bronson! Love it!! 👏🏻👍🏼💙
This footage! I feel like I’m in the ocean with you and Brianna!
