The Untold Story of the Hand of God - Maradona’s Iconic World Cup Moment
On June 22, 1986, Diego Maradona created one of football’s most unforgettable moments-The Hand of God. But this wasn’t just a handball or a controversial goal; it was a war cry. Playing at the Estadio Azteca, under the fierce Mexican sun, Argentina faced off against England in a match that was more than just about football. With tensions rooted in history, Maradona’s infamous handball in the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup became a defiant symbol of Argentina’s resilience and pride.
The match took place just four years after the Falklands War, and for many Argentines, it was a chance to reclaim a sense of national honor. When Maradona scored the “Hand of God” goal, he wasn’t just deceiving the English goalkeeper or bending the rules-he was sending a powerful message. This goal, followed by Maradona’s other stunning solo effort, wasn’t simply about winning; it was about justice, identity, and reclaiming dignity for Argentina.
Join us as we dive deep into the layers of history, emotion, and political context behind Maradona’s legendary goal, exploring why it still resonates as a symbol of defiance for millions. Watch as we recount how this controversial goal became more than a mere act of gamesmanship-it became a cultural icon. Money as killed the beauty of football, before the old Champions Lague format, intrutuced in 1993, only the champion of each coutry was allowed to compete, and the best, or the luckiest was the winner, after the Champions Lague was created only the biggest team won the trorphy, with the exceptions of Dormund in ´96 and Porto in ´04

Good vid about the most scandalous WC ever. It doesnt matter who fixed the game, it might as well have been even triple fixed (bribing the refs, bribing some Peru players, and sending 35 K dollars to Peru Govt, as said by a former senator)... Common sense, the schedule making, the events within the game, show one crystal clear fact: The whole game was rigged to the core. There is no tiny doubt about it.

I dont know about the politics influencing too much, but I do remember Argentina were a very good side, Kempes was scintillating and at his peak, and the atmosphere generated by the home fans for the Argentina games was absolutely electric, the 6 - 0 against Peru was a bit iffy, they just collapsed, maybe in these islands we were brainwashed into thinking they were better than they actually were because they spanked Scotland 3 - 1 earlier in the tournament, but no doubt, Argentina were an excellent side, they still had to beat a superb Holland team in the final.

Generally true but in this case it was the ideological beginnings that were different. One was started by the united alliance of the anti facist youth while the other was started by the Yugoslav people’s army.

Partizan was army club and Yugoslav club, made so that all Yugoslavs support that club, to be No.1 club in the country, they even had players from all republics, my club Red Star started as local Belgrade club and then become serbian club, in times of communism we couldnt express against the communism so supporting red star was like reaction to commie rule, we also became best club not just in yugoslavia/serbia we are best club from south/eastern europe while partizan is behind and didnt achive what they planned, my father was at that 1st derby you mentioned 4-3 and i was at 100th derby

Hahahahah what nonsense you are talking as a Red Star fan. Partizan was founded by the army and Zvezda by the police. In that Yugoslavia, Zvezda had the most titles, so how come Partizan is a Yugoslav club and you are not? You have always had the support of politicians, you have won 7 titles because you are supported by the president of the state (former Red Star ultras), everyone knows that.

very well researched and unbiased summary of the events, a lot of people nowadays just assume that this world cup was fixed without looking much into it was the military junta capable of rigging the tournament? sure. did they benefit from Argentina winning it? absolutely. did they actually do it? it's hard to tell... Regarding the scheduling of the games, it was common at the time for games to not happen at the same time so people could watch both games, giving FIFA more revenue, England, Mexico and West Germany all played their games later than their opponents too when they hosted the tournament before, and it wasn't until the scandal of the Peru game and specially the disgrace of Gijon in Spain 1982 when Germany and Austria collided against Algeria that FIFA decided to play all final group games at the same time starting in 1986 I watched all 7 games Argentina played to make my own video around 9 months ago, and I found nothing specially wrong with the refereeing, bad calls were the norm but it often affected both teams, the game against Hungary featured many inexisting offsides and 2 Hungary players were rightfully sent off after comitting hard fouls while being already booked, and the game against France I didn't see what the clear penalty this "annonymous" french player talked about, emphasis on that, we are saying a game was fixed over a quote from an annonymous source on an event that didn't even happen About the game against Peru, like you highlighted Argentina had a great record against Peru so beating them by a big margin at home wasn't impossible, and Peru even had 2 clear chances while the game was still 0-0 for the people that wanna claim matchfixing, and in the final Rensenbrik hit the post in the 90th minute which would have given the Dutch a World Cup and we would have never talked about a scandal

I kindly feel free to rebut your theories: 1. The PER - ARG game indeed was fixed. Too many smoking guns, plus there are tons of witnesses who later spoke out too. It might have been the most fixed game ever, including all cricked scandals. The stats speak also for itself: 6-0, another three shots hitting the crossbars, thus even a 9-0 was within range. 30-14 fouls disadvantage Peru. This was not a premier league vs 5th league game, where the lesser opponent goes on hacking opposing players to "death" to have a chance to survive. It was a game between two very good teams. Hell broke loose within 57 mins only, when all six goals were scored. Lance Armstrong (who knows a thing ot two about cheating and fixing) would have said "not normal at all". The game stinks from head to toe. There is no tiny doubt about the fix, unless one lives in La La land. 2. Scheduling: Yes, it happened in 74, and 82 too. But who said it wasnt meant to give the home team a chance to actually bribe, and thus prolonging the host vibes (including tons of extra revenue)? 1974 Germany losing to East Germany was kinda "God given" to get a easy 2nd round schedule, preventing opponents of NL, BRA, and ARG. 3. GER and AUS 1982 actually was NOT fixed. Even after the 1-0 in the 11th or so minute, the game was interesting and fully played out (with 14 shots on goal tries in circa 60 mins of play, which was pretty average back in those times, pro-rating to about 21 shots on goal tries over 90 minutes). Only around midway of the 2nd half, as Paul Breitner later stated, the game kind of "stopped", both teams played it out to get it over with, being happy to have qualified. He also stated many games ended like this. The only difference being this normally to happen in the final 5 mins, not the final 30. 4. Rensenbrink 90th minute. Who knows, if the goal was ineed scored, if it would have also counted? And even if it had counted, who knows if there was extra time played until ARG scores the 2-2? Rhetorical. One final say: "Its the economy (speak all about money), stupid". Bill Clinton.
