Turning 38: The Life-Changing Lessons I’ve Learned So Far
I love the $20 rule and the 20/20 one, I am really guilty of looking for 'best' deals for items that cost $1-2, I won't even remember how much I spent on in a couple of days. The funny thing is, where I live, you can sell more things than donate (donation rules are strict while you can sell mostly whatever another person is willing to buy as long as it's not under controlled traffic) and I don't want to toss perfectly fine things, so I still have a pile to deal with...
Right?! The $20 rule and 20/20 rule seriously make life so much easier! And omg, I totally get the struggle of hunting for the ‘best’ deal on tiny purchases-I do that too and then completely forget about it a few days later. 😂 That’s so interesting about selling vs. donating where you live! I feel you on not wanting to toss perfectly good stuff. Does selling make it easier to let go, or do you end up holding onto things longer while waiting for the right buyer?
@EmilyFangYuanyuan I'd say I am not holding onto things in an emotional way once I've decided to part ways with them, but technically I still own them. I have a drawer for the things listed for sale that haven't been bought yet, but I must say it's a completely random process. Some things get sold in a day, while others stay up for months and can be gone very unexpectedly (I once sold snowboarding gear in the middle of summer), and of course many are still waiting for their turn 🙄 that's a bit frustrating but on the other hand, when something does find a new owner, they are usually very pleased to have found it cheaper and/or just available if the thing is no longer sold in stores. I am otherwise a lone wolf but I've had wonderful conversations with very random people around these purchases :)
This is the most needed advice ❤thank you
That means so much to me! 😊 Wishing you all the best on your frugal living journey!

@@EmilyFangYuanyuan Can I share some tips about your channel?
Hi Emily! On January 1 I cleaned out my closet & donated quite a bit. I was hanging on to things, “just in case clothing”, but decided to keep only what I know I will wear. I really went down the pathway of nostalgia but once I realized I was not making any progress I regrouped & accomplished so much. I’ve decided to tackle my kitchen tomorrow & am looking forward to decluttering. Thank you so much for your positive advice. You are right, Time is priceless.
Wow, this is amazing! 🎉👏 You made such a huge step, and I love how you pushed through the nostalgia and took action! Letting go of those “just in case” items is no easy task, but you did it-and that’s so inspiring! 💪✨ Your future self is going to thank you for creating a space that truly serves you. And now onto the kitchen? You’re on a roll! 🚀 Wishing you all the energy and motivation for the next round of decluttering-can’t wait to hear how it goes! 💖 Thank YOU for sharing your journey! 💕
Loved the 20/20 rule Very smart! I always struggle with those items I don't want to let go but really don't need, so this one is perfect to sort stuff out. Thank you Emily 🥰
I’m so glad you found the 20/20 rule helpful! 🥰 It’s honestly a game-changer for those “but what if I need it?” items. Once I started using it, letting go became so much easier! You’ve got this-decluttering is a journey, and every small step counts! 💪✨ Thanks for watching! 💖
Emily!😃 you have two pillows on your couch!!! You only need ONE!!😂 Awesome channel, beautiful host❤
😂 Haha, you got me! But plot twist-it’s actually my roommate’s pillow! 🛋 She’s also a super minimalist, so having two pillows is basically her version of living on the edge. 🤣 Thanks for watching and for the love! ❤

I really appreciate your concern! Every country has its own way of doing things, and while it can feel frustrating at times, I think talking about it openly (but respectfully!) is a good way to understand each other better.
I probably thinking, that if you speak suddenly like you're scared to leak someone's bad works. This probably ccp's attack or something if you mistaken word suddenly anti ccp or censored by ccp, you're life must be at risk
It's a little bit too far😂
If tiktok accused as ccp's data spy. The reason why they banned it. Then they didn't care about Xiaohongshu (sorry for innacurate spelling) which i think Chinese government completely owed media platform
Chinese government win easily but do nothing😂
😊
I had to laugh when you got to the part about how so many English speakers get the answers wrong. Our education system here is absolutely awful. I think this is a really cool moment in history, however, I hope that the foreigners showing up, show respect and don't ruin it for everyone else.
Haha, right? It’s wild how education systems differ so much! But I think moments like this-where we can laugh and learn together-are what make it all so special.
@EmilyFangYuanyuan 🤣! Yes, and I definitely got a good laugh from that! We lived in Germany for about 7 years in total when I was younger and I was a military kid. The regular school system is so different from the one for military kids and in Germany!
@@alb91878 Oh, really? That's very interesting. Could you tell me The differences between The regular school system and the one for military kids?
@@EmilyFangYuanyuan I don't know if I'll be able to explain all of the differences, but I can explain some. In the military schools for kids it's not where we actually learn about the military or anything like that, it's a school for children whose parents are in the military. It has better funding and when I went to school at least when my dad was in the military in Germany we didn't have a middle school. We just had the elementary school and then we had the high school. I believe in most places in North America have Elementary School that goes up until 8th grade and then sometimes they have a middle school that has two or three years in there and then you have the high school. In the military school we started high School in 7th grade not, 9th grade. The class schedule, curriculum, and the education is much better and much more structured. The teachers are held to a much higher standard. We also had a lot more access to side programs and after school activities in different sports and better field trips. Another thing, I absolutely really loved about going to schools for military children is the fact that you had different people from all walks of life at that school. It wasn't a school where people had known each other since kindergarten all the way through 9th or 10th grade and then you're the new person. Also, because you never knew when someone's parents were going to get stationed somewhere else, you tended to bond closely and in a quicker fashion because you never know how long that person was going to be at the school before their parents were transferred to another state or even another country and then you would never see that friend again. For me, we all got along and we didn't have as many issues that normal people in a normal school would because we had to value the time we had with the friends we had as much as possible because it could be very limited. When we went to a regular civilian school and the states everyone was white out of 800 students except for me, a young Mexican guy, two half Korean boys, and this one really sweet black guy on the football team. It was quite a culture shock for the five of us because of over 800 people we were the only non-white people there and also we were kind of out in a way because everyone else had known each other since birth or sense of very young age and we were the new people. It was also the first time that I dealt with racism firsthand and had a lot of issues with people being nasty towards me and having to come to terms with the ugliness I saw on TV being a reality for my daily life. The civilian school I went to was not very well funded and the education was very lacking and I had a lot more lazy or awful teachers in the civilian School than I did in the military schools. There's a lot more, but I've already talked to long enough.
@@alb91878 Your story is so interesting-thanks for sharing it! Let me give you a fun and casual peek into how things work in China when it comes to schools related to the military. In China, we don’t exactly have schools specifically for military kids like the ones you mentioned, but there are “military-affiliated schools” (we call them “军队子弟学校”). These schools are usually well-funded and offer high-quality education, kind of like what you described. They’re often near military bases or in bigger cities, so they provide a stable environment for kids whose parents might be moving around for work. But nope, they don’t teach you how to march or do push-ups-it's just a regular school vibe with some extra perks! Now about school structures: in China, kids go through primary school (grades 1-6), then middle school (grades 7-9), and finally high school (grades 10-12). It’s pretty structured, with a heavy focus on academics (and let’s not forget the famous gaokao-our super intense college entrance exam). Military-affiliated schools might throw in some cool extracurriculars, but trust me, it’s nowhere near the variety of after-school activities you had. You’re lucky! When it comes to diversity, though, it’s a different story. Most schools in China are very homogenous-basically, everyone’s Chinese. The only exceptions might be schools in regions with larger ethnic minority populations or international schools in big cities. So, while it’s culturally cohesive, it might lack the rich mix of people from different backgrounds that you experienced in military schools. Your story about bonding quickly because friends might move away? That’s a big “yep” here too. Military kids in China also move a lot, so they get really good at making fast friendships. It’s like an unspoken superpower for kids who grow up this way! The part about your culture shock and experiencing racism in civilian schools? That really hit me. In China, we don’t face that same level of diversity, so those experiences are less common. But kids returning from abroad or ethnic minorities might sometimes feel a bit “different” or struggle to fit in, so there’s a little overlap there. Overall, I think military kids everywhere learn some of the same life lessons: adaptability, quick bonding, and valuing the time you have with the people around you. It’s like your own little global club of resilient, awesome humans! Thanks again for sharing-it’s so cool to hear your perspective! 😊
Thank you Emily ❤

China haters hates China because the ccp is ruled by asians, if the ccp is ruled by white people then people will stop accusing because everyone is racist not asian
That’s an interesting perspective, but I think the reasons behind criticism of any government are often more complex than race alone. It’s important to separate a government’s policies from the people and culture of a country, and addressing issues with fairness and without bias helps promote understanding.

Who would've thought downloading Chinese has made sooo many Americans learnt more of the truth about the real color of china and also the real truth of their own government's lies😂
Exactly, I think that’s the most interesting part. Initially, the goal was to build an even bigger wall of information control, but no one could have predicted it would evolve this way.😆 In any case, this is a positive thing. Honestly, 99% of misunderstandings are resolved when the truth becomes visible to both sides.

Thank you so much for saying that. Some might have been misinterpretations, while others could be deliberate distortions for certain purposes. But regardless of what the government or media says, it’s ordinary people who tell the truth in situations like this.
Some native English speakers are just not trained teachers or don’t have what it takes to be a teacher. Meanwhile, my mom and dad usually have me as the family proofreader even though I am Chinese American and speak with a slight foreign accent. 😅
I heard that Americans made some Chinese students fail,
I think your explanation is spot on.
Meanwhile I literally downloaded Instagram onto my phone 📱 because it had more functionality than the desktop version. 😅
I’ve downloaded Instagram too, but I mainly enjoy watching cute dog videos for 10 minutes after a long day, haha. May I know what do you mean by "functionality"?
@@EmilyFangYuanyuan I use Instagram primarily for showcasing artwork. That's it. And I have heard that the Instagram app has the ability to add Stories, and I am so jealous. I mainly created the Instagram account on Desktop for uploading my comic that I had collaborated on with a script-writer, and I now use the same account to make art posts. Now that I find out about the whole Stories feature, I decide to download Instagram app and take full advantage of Instagram. Instagram will be my Art Portfolio for all kinds of pictures and animations. And I am going to keep on making art posts until I get hired for real as an illustrator or animation artist.
if Tik Tok survives .. Tik Tok and Red Note will be like two regions in a landscape. I like the Chinese fantasy game, Genshin Impact. Two of the regions there are Mondstadt and Liyue. Mondstadt is idealised European in character. Liyue is idealised Chinese in character. Mondstadt is lazy, relaxed, unwinding .. Liyue is thriving, busy and commercial. The regions suit different moods. I think, maybe Tik Tok and Red Note will have a two-homes complementarity. Though, i'm not sure what the complementarity will be. /just random thinking PS: re the quality of the visitor posts in Red Note .. the issue of cultural interchange itself gives the personal direct posts a high quality of their own. The quality is beyond the technical and into the interpersonal and intercultural. It's a visceral quality and it benefits from it.
Although I have not played the fantasy game you said, but I think you have expressed your meaning, I can understand that indeed this is a need for a long, maybe it will be relatively long. You are right about the quality of the posts, but it has also caused some complaints from Rednote natives, because many Rednote content creators are full-time, which has a greater impact on them
Rednote becoming an international platform is a HUGE win for China, in terms of promoting cultural understanding and improving tourism.
I hope so, but it all happened so absurdly and so quickly. Rednote had a long history of trying to go international without much success, but this time, everything was so magical 😂
And as a travel video creator, I invite you to travel to China😆
Great video, Emily! 😃 Insightful and informative! Thanks for sharing helpful examples of Chinese culture! Happy Spring Festival! 🎇
Thank you for your kind reply and for mentioning Chinese New Year.🎉 I'm making a video about learning to celebrate minimalism during Chinese New Year, and I think that would be challenging. You don't look Chinese😊, but I want to bring you the joy of Chinese New Year❤
I explore Red Note for its art and painting contents
Yes, there are some independent Chinese artists on Rednote who share their artwork. They might even gain more opportunities or monetize their creations through their work. Either way, social platforms are a great way to showcase yourself. On Rednote, I focus on creating travel videos, and it’s also a fantastic way to meet new friends!😊
So, how do like it so far??
@@EmilyFangYuanyuan😢😢😢😢I saw some Chinese person saying they hate it because Americans brought their brainrot to xhs
@@lenziany a lot of good artists, but lately a lot of AI generated works, at least they hashtagged them as AI.
@ Yes, AI-generated content is a niche interest in China that a small but passionate group enjoys. Although we haven’t seen major commercial success in this field yet, people love creating and sharing AI works.
Hey Emily, are you a red note refugee in UA-cam, Instagram etc? Who gave you the name Emily? I'm curious.
Hi there! Your question is really interesting. I’m not a refugee from anywhere-I just genuinely love being a content creator. I enjoy making videos and sharing fun moments, thoughts, and perspectives. In China, though, we don’t have access to UA-cam. It wasn’t until last year, when I moved to Canada for work, that I was finally able to upload videos on UA-cam and keep sharing consistently. As for my name, Emily, I remember my foreign teacher in middle school gave it to me. I thought it was simple and friendly, so I’ve stuck with it ever since. Thanks for your question! 😊
@ Thank you for answering my questions. I’m from New York City and I also live in Shenzhen China 🇨🇳 (I’m American and not Chinese) but I love China. I have access to UA-cam and Google in mainland China through VPN with no problem. I don’t like the word refugee either 🤭 so I don’t consider myself a tik tok refugee 🤣 needless to say I will subscribe to your channel because you answered my questions.
@@ACLinks. Of course, I’m happy to answer all your questions!😊 When I was in China, I also used a VPN, but it often had issues or the connection would drop, so it wasn’t very convenient.😞 I really like Shenzhen-it’s such a beautiful and clean city, and you can find so many amazing electronic products there. When people think of Shenzhen, they usually picture it as a bustling city, but for me, the small fishing villages around Shenzhen are much more interesting. Spending a weekend exploring them feels like such a treat! Thank you again for subscribing.❤
@@EmilyFangYuanyuan thank you Emily. Yes I think the most beautiful fishing villages I have visited in China was Houtouwan. Shenzhen is the silicon Valley of Asia far from a fishing village now. Ask for your VPN you should’ve tried Shadowrocket. It never goes down, but you need a QQ account in order to set it up.
So I'm not american, but I did sneak in with them... I love this app. I love seeing the cultural exchange. Learning more about Chinese culture and the quality of videos is very inspiring. I've also picked up duelingo and started doing Mandarin....
You're absolutely amazing!! I also love watching cultures connect and interact-that’s exactly why I’m so passionate about traveling. Every culture in the world has its own unique beauty, and it’s incredible to experience that. You're awesome, too! I love using Duolingo as well. The more languages we learn, the more doors we open to exploring the world. Thank you again for your kind response, and I really hope you’ll visit China someday. Looking forward to it! 🌏✨
@@EmilyFangYuanyuando you have such a kind and open beautiful personality and mindset! I really hope that other people can learn from you and the people from your country!
@@alb91878 100% agree. It’s such a privilege to experience other cultures, and the least we can do is be mindful and kind. Thank you for sharing❤
I’m American, and after the TikTok ban I want to get into influencing, but I don’t think I want to start on tiktok, I feel like xiaohongshu is an amazing place for me to start but I’m nervous, I don’t speak Chinese very well either, which is kind of a problem I’m not 100% sure how to start!
Americans getting English homework wrong. 😂
Yeah, it’s funny, isn’t it? We can finally complain that the English homework we had in school really was way too hard. 😄
As an american I told our fellow Americans don't do that. We have a bad problem of acting before we think. If there was a wall to get through some people think, make plans and make it easier. Americans we just ram our head against the wall until it breaks or we die
Americans can't even get their own homework correct...they certainly are not going to be able to do most Asian, or even European countries, homework. 😂
@EmilyFangYuanyuan hehe, I just guess their education level will be flawed,
@mautre It depends where they are from. Yes Democrat cities prioritize Gay and gender studies but that is not all schools. Basically if you think their are more than 2 genders please don't try and help them.
Do you have a home tour
I can definitely make one! But I’m leaving for vacation tomorrow, the home tour video will have to wait until I’m back in about a month. Stay tuned! 😊
