well there is a theory that night furys aren't naturally from the arcipelagos (the place the movies take place in) and since it is apparently the fastest flying dragon people theroize that the night fury is common just not in the archipeligos. since it's the fastest flying dragon it Toothless could've came from somewhere far outside the archipelagos where night furies are actually common
