Syntakt: not just a drum machine - Film score jam, all 12 tracks for melodic parts
The more we use the Syntakt, the more it feels like a synthesizer first and drum computer second. In this jam, all of the 12 tracks are used for melodic and atmospheric parts to create sounds that try to emulate instruments in an orchestra.
We imagine this could be a film score or a soundtrack in a video game or something like that.
100% of the sound sources are from the Syntakt. This jam was recorded into the DAW using Overbridge. We love the hybrid workflow because it takes the best parts of both worlds!

MPC isn't just for hip hop! Standalone chillwave jam on the Live 2

Here's a jam on the MPC Live 2 that we did while being out on a 24-hour music-making camper van trip. The MPC Live 2 is pretty much the ideal groovebox for these kinds of scenarios with its built-in battery and speaker. This allowed us to record this jam in one take without any cables whatsoever. All you need to do is to convert a song into a sequence, arm Automation and then hit Over Dub and i...

We've had an MPC for the past 3 years, but we would have bought it even sooner if we hadn't paid so close attention to how it's marketed and what others are saying about it. With this "jam" (well, more of a full-blown production, MPC stands for Music Production Center after all), we're hoping to debunk a couple of the myths about the modern MPC line that at least held us back from purchasing on...

      One one of my older MPCs, I didn't peel it off for like forever but at some point it started to look like some oily stuff was leaking down to the surrounding rubberized coating. It made the coating wear off a bit. Not sure if it was related to the protective film or not, but that's when I decided it's probably best to remove it sooner this time. 😊

      Thanks for the feedback! It's a pretty fluid process to tweak the sounds and arrangement of each voice/track to play nice together so technically you're right that it does take some time, but it's happening in parallel with the arrangement, sequencing and jam rehearsals so it's a bit like meditation to me.

    • @sinewaymusic
      @sinewaymusic Місяць тому

      Thanks Jan! I agree, and for a long time we struggled with it. The envelopes are also quite snappy but you can really soften them up by dialing them down a bit. And we almost always put a base width filter that cuts somewhere north of 3-6 khz. It's a very gentle slope (I'm guessing 6 dB per octave) so you still retain a lot of top end in the full mix. With tricks like this, the Syntakt can sound very warm and rich with both the analog and digital tracks. 😊

    FYI for anyone dicouraged by the two operator FM thing on syntakt. The two LFO's can be used as extra fixed frequency operators, you can change their frequency per step to make them more musical

    • @sinewaymusic
      @sinewaymusic Місяць тому

      Hey, that's interesting! As someone who is *very* far from an FM sound design expert, could you share a little more on this one? 😇

    • @SparkySubie
      @SparkySubie Місяць тому

      @@sinewaymusic The LFO's can do audio rate modulation which can be used to turn them into two extra operators, they only go to 2k though. Basically you can assign the LFO to the pitch of a machine's oscillator and crank the frequency up as high as 2000 (and then a bit higher with the speed knob). You can use the LFO amount knob to control the level of said operator. The problem is, there is no keyfollow on the LFO rate, so to achieve musical results (for example if you want to play a melody) you need to change the LFO rate every time you play a different note in the step sequncer. So if I play the C3 note and the LFO is set to 260Hz for example, if you wanna play C4 which is an octave higher (2x higher frequency) you would have to double the LFO rate to 520 as a parameter lock for that specific step with the C4 note to keep a consistent operator to carrier ratio. I haven't tried making any melodies using this methods so I don't know how it sounds, but I have used the LFO's to modulate pitch to make some gnarly percussion. Each LFO also has fade settings that can be used as envelopes. In theory you can use the second LFO as an envelope to modulate the slope of the fade on the first LFO so you can get different envelope slopes. You can also directly use the ramp shape to modulate LFO amt. You aren't limited to frequency modulation, you can also use audio rate LFOs for amp modulation and Filter FM

    • @sinewaymusic
      @sinewaymusic Місяць тому

      @@SparkySubie This is super fascinating. Although I do understand the fundamentals of FM synthesis, I can't really imagine what kinds of sonically different timbres you might achieve through this approach. You mentioned some gnarly percussion, but I wonder if there are some more common examples of "FM sounds that recuire more than two operators". I guess I'll have to explore on my own to see if I end up making a sound that sounds different from what the SY Tone settings can achieve on their own - and if those new sounds are pleasing. But on paper, it does sound like it might get a bit too tedious for my taste to then carefully dial in p-locked tuning to get it right. To me, the core strength of the Syntakt is in how quickly you can make something sound great, and how fun that process is. But the theory you're suggesting is nevertheless intriguing and worth exploring. Thanks for sharing!

    • @SparkySubie
      @SparkySubie Місяць тому

      @@sinewaymusic So I tried making something more melodic, the results are still somewhat musical so long as the LFO depths are kept small but it's nearly impossible to tune any of the sounds by ear on a per step basis and they still don't sound like a digitone 😄. Still usable for adding a wierd dissonant /aliasing bell flavor to melodies though! Just not for proper FM synthesis

      @@vergellim7361 Thanks for the compliment about the music, really appreciate it! 🙏 Honestly, with that kind of setup, my first thought is: do you really need more gear at all? Both the MPC and the Force are full-blown production environment that can do everything from samples and synths to drum synthesis. Then you have the Push 2 which means you have access to the entire world of Ableton Live too. And then you have yet another sampler in the SP-404 MKII? 😂 So I can't really see what's missing there. But if you *really* want more gear, between those three choices, the Syntakt would be the most interesting one. The Digitakts are more of what you already have in a way, it doesn't seem like you'd benefit from even more samplers. Despite Roland being a large corporation and Elektron a boutique hardware builder, the unfortunate reality for us, the end users, is that neither is likely to listen to their customer base and make a product that bridges the two devices. From the end user's perspective, there is no good reason why there isn't a sample playback 'machine' in the Syntakt, or why there is no audio input on the MC-101. With that being said, I still prefer the MC-101, the workflow is not as smooth, but it has vastly greater sound options, it plays samples and it has a much more powerful synth engine, which supports importing presets from the Zenology software.

      Yeah the MC-101 wins from a sound palette perspective and the workflow is smoother on the Syntakt. 😊
