(Genre: goth rock) Silent Night began its existence in 1816 as a poem written in German by the Austrian priest Joseph Mohr after the Napoleonic Wars. On Christmas Eve of 1818, Mohr brought the poem to organist Franz Xaver Gruber and asked him to compose a melody on guitar for the evening mass since the church's organ had been damaged by a flood. Thus the hymn was born in German as "Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht" (translated Silent Night, Holy Night). John Freeman Young translated 3 of the German hymn's 6 verses into English at Trinity Church in New York City in 1859. And this same translation is the popular version of the song sung today. This carol has been translated into over 300 languages.
