The Old Chron: High Street History Lesson
Essex Chronicle print worker Dave Boden tells the story of the Essex Chronicle he joined straight from school when he was 15 - one of three spells he had based at 98, High Street, before its closure and move lock stock and barrels of ink to the brand new purpose built modern printing works at Westway on the Widford Industrial Estate in 1967.

Just discovered some memories of the golden era of the Essex Chronicle, launched in Chelmsford High Street 1674, which sold like hot cakes making the Goss Press hum and inkies whistle a happy tune out back That was until one fateful day Editorial Director Peter Smith wheeled in a trolly full of Apple SE word processors and told us to take all our typewriters to the skip outside. The Old Chron has moved a number of times since the newspaper was founded in 1764 in small premises, behind what is now Marks & Sparks in the High Street. Then with the collapse of the newspaper industry it did...

I concur.
these old movies got such a dramatic music. wow. a genuine artistry
There is no more free press or journalists anymore as they have been replaced by socialist funded fake news.
St Pius boy. RIP
wonderful movie...........
ABSOLUTELY
I liked the character that humphrey bogart played as top editor in the newspaper.
I want to be that editor when I grow up
Does this remind you of Facebook and Twitter trying to silence their opposition? Bogart said "without competition there can be no free press". Facebook and Twitter want no competition and won't allow opposition, so they are not for free speech. They are no different than the ones buying the Day in this movie.
I agree with Bogey too
Narrated for the first time - featuring John 'The Voice' Rhodes
it was a good movie and love the idea of a free press and hoping it makes a difference which it can but in the old days LOL bogart would have been killed like chicago mafia did to that newspaper man [i want to sat his name was jake lingle] it was a famous mob hit in like 1931? enjoyable watch tho thanks for providing the video
Thats showbiz
1:16:10 -- "We're all aware of what a newspaper consists." Oops. Either the script writers or the actor flubbed here. We need two "of"s. One for "aware of" and one for "consists of": "We are all aware of what a newspaper consists of."
Of course, but having worked on newspapers as a genious OF a journalist, I know exactly what a newspaper consists of - stories and pics, but when it comes to my stories, I would describe them as works of fiction and art, or more precisely artistic licence. I used to buy a licence regularly so that I did not have to let the facts get in the way of a good story.
No. A sentence does not end with a preposition. The sentence is correct.

So sorry to hear the sad news of Gary I worked with him for many years on the Essex Chronicle RIP Gary
Good film after I took some dramamine for motion sickness. NEWSpapers of the past were just that. Today they are political arms of the democRAT, aka the communist party. No investigative reporting, no fact-checking, no facts, just lies and censorship of people they do not agree with.
Excellent summing up, now be careful about those drugs - I well recall as a lad on board a ship bound for dear old blighty, as we rounded Cape Fear, all the furniture sliding back and forwards in the main lounge. Back and forwards and mummy rushing me downstairs to lay down on bunk beds until the storm passed, arggh, shipmates them be the days of my life.As for your swipe against the Democrats - there are extremists in every political party, the Republicans attract fascists and the Democrats attract communists. Neither extremists have a part in democracy, they both lead to terror, death camps, and pogroms.
@@TheOldChron No swipe against the democRATS just numerous generations of watching them at work and living in RAT-controlled cities. Simply looking at the quality of life in Rat-controlled cities and how the rag newspapers in those Rat-controlled cities whitewash those events is very telling to those who look with both eyes open. Try looking at what they do, not what they say.
@@drats1279 There is good and bad in every political party, stop worrying about what they are doing and urge those you support to be whiter than white, promoting good quality of life, and practice what they preach, Not so?
VERY good movie!!
Yes it is - it is what we expect of the press, in my experience local newspapers are a lot more down to earth, caring, honest and help more than the gutter rats lurking in the Streets of Shame, but human nature being drawn towards the dark side its a wonder anywhere in the world is perfect.
When I was a kid, the word went around that because this put Journalism in a bad light, the in print reviews panned this picture, resulting in significant lower box office. I wonder to this day if this was true.
Hmmm I am going to ponder for a while and come back to you, look Cindy, I dont quite understand your thrust, I mean I does not really matter, but thank you for contribution, who knows is my reply, but please when you find the answer please send it to silly old me
"this put Journalism in a bad light" Seems to me it put it in a very good light. A beacon of truth, run by heroes of incorruptible integrity.
This movie was informative as was as entertaining, but what really made it special is the cast...WOW !
As they exclaim about 'The Big Fisherman' What a cast!
A far cry of what 'newspapers' are today full of misinformation, self serving, lies , muck racking , cronyism, money grabbing , propaganda, gutless, amoral, political bent ideology and godless, without a shred integrity.
Oh dear, what a pity, never mind. I think its best to watch Monty Don planting his little potatoes or re-runs of Dads Army, can I also suggest you tune into Times Radio on DAB, its a new station created by all of the above, which I find listenable because there are virtually no annoying adverts. Mariella Frostdown is my favourite! Sadly because we live in a fallen world people by human beings we will always have misinformation, self serving, lies , muck racking , cronyism, money grabbing , propaganda, gutless, amoral, political bent ideology and godless, without a shred integrity. They only places this does not exist is North Korea and the Isle of Wight.
Nonsense. There have always been, still are, and probably will always be newspaper good and bad.
Another great black and white movie,

Great actors in this one. Quite an assembly of great character actors and not possible today to find such a group. Recognize some of the faces? They were not in the credits. Jim Backus and Dabs Greer just to name a few. Wonderful movie and it is frequently shown, which shows it is not forgotten
Its is a wonderful movie, as a journalist myself I am drawn to his character, if only they were all super heroes like this newsdesk, print and be blessed!
This is my second time watching this movie and l most admit is a great film,A Classic no doubt!!!☺️😊🤗
Yes its something journalists should all aim to be, fearless and frank

Very true, those certainly were the golden ages of long, rewarding careers and lovely pensions as a retirement reward
Why would you show this movie at the wrong screen ratio? Do you not have any concept of films and the importance of cinematography? Might as well show this in an 8 mm Cinemascope Technicolor print with Dolby stereo sound, and skip the credit sequences.
Oh please stop moaning until you yourself try to think out of the bitter box you are trapped in, as for your suggestions I am getting a team onto it.

The good old Newsman Herald. I met Martin Rogers a couple of times when I was working at the Chronicle. The Newsman was a great little paper. Such a shame to see the Essex Chronicle looking so thin and sparse nowadays, as opposed to many times in the past when you could spend a good few days reading it. I'm glad that I was a member of staff when the paper, in my eyes, was at its peak. Memories of some good colleagues there as well.
Hi Gary, Glad you are keeping safe and sound in these strange times - thanks for your contribution, much appreciated old chum - those were the golden years of local newspaper, we shall never see the like again - I do believe we are suffering from what all oldeeeer people go through in their sunset years, but I don't think nostalgia is a thing of the past, do you! Not long now!, brother Sports Editor, but hopefully this YT channel will keep memories alive and passed on to future generations of the way we were. God be with you till we meet again in that great newsroom in the sky.
This is one of three videos The Old Chron features regarding Julie McCreadie's losing tragic battle with Alzheimer's Disease and how her courageous husband Bob Crowley wants to help others to understand more about Care, Comfort, Compassion with a CD of hope.

After watching this movie, I figured how much do I miss the true art of cinematography
Bless you - have your regain the true art yet?
Um....wrong screen ratio.
Oh dear what a pity never mind!
What is truth? For our Westminster politicians and Prime Minister, anything but. For myself, I very much enjoyed the film, wavy screen too. This film gives me hope that someone, somewhere will tell the truth about our unlawful actions in lands far away. Plastered on the front pages. Perhaps I'm too hoping for too much. As my old workmate would say; "Jonnie, life isn't Hollywood, life is Cricklewood". Thanks for the upload anyway.👍
I find it interesting to note that the most famous or infamous historical figure to ask What is Truth was not Jesus Christ, of whom it was asked, but Pontious Pilate, the Roman Governor, after the Jewish Messiah mentioned the word truth. There is no record of what answer Jesus gave, which is even more interesting, so to speak.
@@TheOldChron I know it wasn't Tony Blair. Cheers.👍

On guard, on a bike, on what exactly Victor Victoria?
Even with a faulty picture it is still a great film. They just don't write scripts like that anymore. Bogey and Ethel Barrymore have outstanding screen presence. Direction, cinematography and editing sharp and pacey.
I think you are steering in the right direction, keep up the comments good or bad
