Porcini mushroom (King Boletes) hunting near Monterey California Fall 2021
Переглядів 28 тис.2 роки тому
I decided to make an attempt to look for porcini mushrooms knowing that there had been little rain during the previous weeks, and I’m certainly glad I did! It turned out to be a very productive few days hunting for these delicious mushrooms over the 2021 Thanksgiving weekend in the central California coastal hills near Monterey.

      Thanks Max! Glad you enjoyed watching my silly video. Truth be told, I combined some footage from two days of foraging. Most is from the one more productive day tho. Ha! Even when I watch my videos it seems like a dream. Because it’s not very frequent that I find such abundance due in part to our dry autumns here in Central Coastal California. I just returned this year from hunting my favorite spot which produced nothing at all. No rain. No boletes. Ugh! It was pretty disappointing. Good luck hunting!! 👊🏼

    Are you sure this is boletus edulis? Since the forrest consists of pines and your mushrooms look quite reddish, I think you found boletus pinophilus. It's a rare kind here in Germany.

      You live in Carmel Valley and I’m hunting not far from you in a private forest along PCH close to Pacific Grove. As you’re well aware, boletes are found in most of the coniferous coastal forests. However, they’re really elusive and not frequently encountered unless ideal conditions are met (sunny warm weather several days after heavy rain). Look for shrumps under pine trees. G’luck Howie in your mushroom hunting!

      Hi there Johnny! What part of Germany are you from? I love your beautiful country. I’ve been fortunate to have visited Germany several times. Hard to compete with the beauty there! As per exactly which mushroom species these boletes are I am not certain. Everyone has referred to them as King Boletes or just Boletus edulis. They are found in a coniferous forest (Monterey pines, etc) mixed with some deciduous trees as well. Good luck hunting! 🍄 😊

      @@WildWorldProductionsTV Hello. I‘m from the south of Lower Saxony, close to the Harz mountains. We have a lot of beech/oak trees. Due to bark beetles the spruce forests are mostly dead (luckily there were only a few parcels in the forests around my home). I find lots of boletus edulis under beech and oak, unfortunately chanterelle spots are very rare.

    It hurts my heart seeing you to uncover and destroy all the soil around mushroom and than leave it exposed to dry. It is really bad. Just very carefully remove the mushroom and immediately very carefully close the soil around. And try not to walk there. PLEASE.

    Hey I’m mycology student and was wondering if there was a spot you recommend by Monterey? I’ve been have really bad luck with finding mushrooms outside of oldgrown oak forests. Thank you , and great finds !

    • @WildWorldProductionsTV
      @WildWorldProductionsTV 2 роки тому

      Hey Jessie! Thanks for watching and for your comments. If you’re an amateur mycologist then you’ve got much more information than I have, for sure! I honestly generally have pretty bad luck in finding mushrooms. Esp the edibles like King boletes! However, once in awhile I get ‘lucky’ and hit the coniferous forests around Monterey (Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Carmel) during the perfect window and come across an occasional beauty. My only recommendation to you would be to scour the forest floor wherever ideal conditions match up for Boletes - ie season, recent rain, soil warmth, proper vegetation (pines & other conifers) etc. Unfortunately, I personally have never found Porcini in or around old growth oak forests. I wish I could, however! Always a good idea to ask other mushroom hunters that you may encounter while hunting a certain area to get some better clues. From my experience, most people freely share info and will help you if you’re respectful. That said, these prized mushrooms have a tendency to evade even the well-experienced harvesters. So good luck and don’t give up! And don’t forget to crouch down and look for shrumps. You could be standing on top of one and hardly even know it!
