Hitchhiking to Sydney in the Piper Seneca
Today i get to commute back to Sydney privately in David's 1976 Piper Seneca from Brisbane's Archerfield Airport to Sydney's Camden Airport..
This is the longest private GA commute I have done in a piston aircraft, and its my first piston twin experience also.
I'm also looking forward to experiencing the convenience of David's IFR Rating and letting me pick his brain for 3 hours.
Thanks again David, it was an awesome trip!

Episode 3 Disassembling the Empennage.

This week I have been cracking the whip and stripping down the horizontal stabilizer. You will see what I have found in terms of build quality while opening up these parts for inspection and proper corrosion proofing.
Episode 2 De Riveting the Skins and stuff.

So, this week I have been drilling out rivets and dealing with hay-fever. I also panicked over the weekend and ran around to see Burgess Aircraft Maintenance and another local legend to make sure I was on the right path. Now I have a consensus amongst the builders and the people who know what they're doing giving me the thumbs up for going back to proper prep and assembly. Thanks Scotty P for l...
Today, I get to fly this plane for free!

Lucky me! I received a phone call from Mahl Oakes down at Fly Now Redcliffe to fly one of his aircraft for FREE!. This is the call every pilot wants to receive. The catch was, I just had to give him a ride to another airport across the pond to pick up an RV14 coming out of maintenance. Our videos can't be all about work, so this is a great chance to offer other flying content apart from the air...
Episode 1 Building the RV14A. Back to basics.

In order to build the RV14A we first have to refine our aircraft building skills. Come along and watch as I go down to Redcliffe Airport to seek help from the people who have been there and done that all before.
I purchased a flat packed aircraft. Vans RV14A.

I purchased one of the world’s most popular kit aircraft. I will be documenting my aviation adventure of building, flying and syndicating my Vans RV14A.
Very nice video. My next gyro is going to be a TAG. They are really well designed and have a lot of space with those storage compartments.
Nice to see some more Australian GA content. Love the Senecas!
Thanks dude! Just found your channel too. Love the content!
There’s a tidy phenom next to the hangar too!!
I might have to do a sneaky review when the pilot has ducked off to the loo.
Nice video
Does that guy train people there at Caboolture?
Not normally no, Joe conducts training out of Wondai but one of his students is based out of Caboolture so that’s how I managed to snag a flight experience locally. 💪
Great video mate. Hope u do some more.
Thanks mate. I hope to do some more soon also. I need to get Joey to squeeze me into his schedule so I can ride in the front seat this time.
Thoroughly enjoyed your video. Thank you for posting. A good introduction to the gyroplane. I could do this.
I’m glad you liked the video. You should give the gyro a go.
Some use broom handle to peel. blue plastic. Like on the skins
That’s not a bad idea. I’ll try that. Thanks Bob! 👍
Another great video, Cannot wait until the next one.
Now I’m almost convinced to give a gyro a go….almost.
Do it! 💪
Good job going through it all, pulling it back and getting it done correctly. Hate to judge but pretty poor effort by the previous builder. On a more positive note have really enjoyed your videos so far so ill be following along with great interest!
Awesome content mate, your getting better with every video. Keep it up
I had assumed you were pulling this all apart due to laser cut parts - but lucky you have. The workmanship is terrible - a few extra holes here and there is a real worry - scrap those parts. The pic of the dimple crack is pretty scary. I dare say none of the holes has been deburred. It might be better for you just to order a whole new empennage kit?
I have had assessments undertaken by several experts. Aviation sheet metal and composites experts, licensed airframe mechanical engineers, private builders, etc. None were concerned about pulling the components apart as long as it’s done carefully. This is the process for how all repairs, service bulletins are performed, nothing out the ordinary. No need to order a new empennage kit, just need to get a handful of parts from Vans to replace the ones that had the “oopsies”, holes, cracks etc.
@@FixItKris I would think carefully about the laser but parts issue. At a minimum the bits which are identified by Vans as needing to be replaced should be! I would also check every rib for cracks on the dimples. You are riveting each hole twice now - that’s twice the force / fatigue etc on this laser cut holes. 😬 up to you of course - opinions are like bum holes after all.
@@tasesq you are correct about the laser cut parts. I have received all the replacement parts for the laser cut parts. No lcp are in the empennage, just the wings and fuse. As for the re-rivetting and strength of said rivets, I have consensus from all those I have consulted, otherwise I would have reordered the empennage. Any part that will not be as good as new is getting replaced and the reassembly will be done under the experts supervision.
Now empenndage makes sense ! 😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤
Spending a couple of days now in the foetal position is good practice for the latter “paperwork”stages, when you’ll likely spend weeks in that orientation. It might also be worth getting some professional coaching in “autonomous uncontrollable twitching” to ensure your technique is mastered.
😂 I relish the thought. Sounds like you’re speaking from experience?
You are a great content creator. Great photography. Great editing, etc. I'm building an RV-14 myself and I can't imagine starting out by tearing everything apart. I thought building it "in order" was challenging enough. Anyway, I really enjoy your videos and look forward to more. -Brian from central Oregon, USA (OG21)
Thanks for the inspirational words @bertschb. Hope we can surf the skies together one day soon. 🤞
Keep up the good work mate, I’m hooked on your journey building this puppy 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
You got one more subscriber Bro!....Incredible work
Thanks my bro!
Joblist is getting longer, great seeing someone dedicated to getting the job done correctly, no matter the time cost
No compromise. Gotta go backwards to go forwards sometimes.
A question….Is there any Vans requirement to isolate the lead counterweight from the aluminium frame, to avoid galvanic corrosion?
It's generally recommended to isolate dissimilar metals to prevent galvanic corrosion. Lead counterweights should be isolated from aluminum components to avoid potential issues. Using appropriate barriers or insulating materials between the lead and aluminum can help mitigate this corrosion risk. I find something new around every corner which sends me down an educational rabbit hole.
The DRDT2 needs to go fully over centre of you will end up with underdimpled holes and a crappy line of rivets visually. Have a read of the manual. With no metal in between the dies, the nut should be adjusted to there is a tiny bit of flex in the steel arm of the tool.
Thanks for tip! I will definitely need to be well read up on it by the time i’m up to drilling and dimpling fresh pieces. 👍
Only 18,000 holes left to drill and debur 😊
Eating the elephant 1 bite at a time brother 😉
Nice one
I bet you can’t wait to get yours finished after seeing those two !
Its inspiration!
Great video mate! I feel like I'm there!
Thanks dude. I’m glad you liked it.
Wow looks like an awesome experience
Learning so much about riveting I didn’t know didn’t realise there was so much to it
Me too brother 🤓
Good to have experience in your camp Looking forward to the process
Starting with great mentors is awesome -- Really looking forward to following your build. Great video -- You covered a lot in eleven and a half minutes!
Thanks so much for your support! Do you think I’m a medium or large in Vans T-shirts? 😎
I hit Subscribe and even put the 'bell" on. Not many content creators get sub'd AND the bell. I did it for you cause you're special....
Oh ....I will argue in the comments dont you worry ! Who do you think you are ? Mike Patey ? 😅😅😅😅😅
Are you crazy? Clearly he is nothing like Mike Patey? Honestly are they giving out UA-cam licenses in cereal boxes nowadays?
Haha! Mike Patey wouldn’t let me wash his aircraft.
Good job mate! looking forward to watching the build!
Looking forward to seeing your build!!
Can’t wait to sort through the B roll for JXR! 🎉😘
