OG Wimbo here. Amen to you, Mark. She was wonderful! Love this Song.
Long ago and far away I was riding my motorcycle outside of San Marcos Texas. It was a cold day in the Texas Hill Country, sunny, but cold. I stopped by this little bar out in the Bumfuck neighborhood called The Devils Backbone Tavern. They had a big fire going in the fireplace, I was the only one in the bar except for the bartender. That fireplace and cold beer was exactly what was needed that day. I had a few beers, a lot of them free just because the bartender needed somebody to talk to. I did buy a tee shirt though. ;-) (I got a Luckenbach tale too ;-D).
😂🎯💯❤️😂
A mix between “Alices’s restaurant” and “Don’t think twice it’s alright”.
That was memorable! I liked it!
To anyone still on TROG's extra couch, hang in there its gunna be ok. 🤣
😂😂😂
I’m from Nigeria and I love this song .... I feel bad that it took me this long to listen but I’m glad I did . ❤️
It really was like that …no joke Every day an adventure. Things were cheap back then. Our 3 bedroom 1930s house rent was $100. Gas was 19 cents tacos and tamales were $1 for a dozen beer was 25 cents or $3 a case
That was in Austin Tx Early 1970s Willie had just moved to town and the music scene was hopping Armadillo World Headquarters. Look that up
I got lost and ran into lukenbach, nice place, and you don’t suck todd
My Great Aunt Virgie died in 1999. Her son Kenneth owned the Backbone Tavern. She tended bar in his tavern. She was a gem, I loved her. She was very outspoken and a could be a real sweetheart.
Woah, Ken is my dad! Are you in Texas?
Ah man, I was actually hoping to meet her someday, it seems lifes too short to worry and also too short to hate. RIP sweetheart, even those you never knew honor you
She will live forever in this song.
This bar is on my bucket list. Rest assured, your Aunt Virgie's legend lives on!❤
✌🏼❤️🎶
2021💜✌💜FuckYa
He wrote this song about my Great Aunt Virgie!!! Her son Kenneth (Kenny) owned the bar. Aunt Virgie passed away in 1999 at the age of 81.
Todd makes her sound like a sweetheart and this song makes me smile so I hope this comment makes you smile, too
TS and James McMurtry. 2 of the best song writers in the land. and sadly two of the most underrated. Sigh.........

Well, Eddie just passed, and Jerry followed him last night... someone find Todd, Miss Virgie, and Trog and get them out of 2020 before they all die!
Unfortunately Virgie passed in 1999, she was 85 years old.
How many of you immediately thought to come here when Eddie Van Halen dies... RIP
Me
RIP Eddie Van Halen. Rock on Todd
RIP Eddie Van Halen of the Eddie Van Halen Band. I listened to VH like everyone else back in the day, but this is the first song I think of first when someone mentions Eddie Van Halen. Variety makes life worthwhile.
Me Too!! My wife Texted me "Eddie Van Halen Died". I said "Eddie Van Halen and the Eddie Van Halen Band"? She said "No, Just him". LOL
I snuck into Gruene Hall to see Jerry Jeff Walker back then. Coulda been the same show?
Love him!!!
I thought, "Shit... I could do that." truly inspiration to us all.
Dude is wealthier than any rich man I know.
They just had an anniversary party in Feb. First time Todd had ben back since then.
A little known fact. Trog is Mark Petersen from Pipe Creek TX. RIP my brother.
A little known fact. Trog is Mark Petersen from Pipe Creek TX. RIP my brother.
Can you get there from Arkansas?
I travel the backbone nearly everyday. Great views of the hill country in central Texas. Even has a picnic/rest stop. Couple of bars there as well. Come on and check out the devils backbone
Heard this on the radio this morning. Amazing story, made me think a lot.
Great song!!!
Canyon Lake Texas is amazing I lived there for 4 years and yesterday was the first time that I stopped at the Devil's Backbone Tavern. I always wanted to stop but no one would go with me.. lol. So yesterday I did go into the tavern when I went back to Henning Lake for a few days and it was amazing I met a guy in the parking lot here was leaving and told me about Todd Snider and his song and that's what brought me here his name was Charlie and he had it yellow lab he was loading up in his truck when he was leaving and we talked for a while and I went in thinking "I wish I knew somebody " and this woman who i had never seen before said "well there you are" and I went inside with her, ordered a beer and made a wonderful friend ♥️ her name is Kathy anf I will always know that I was meant to meet her. . The reason I had always wanted to go before is because the tavern is said to be haunted and it totally is! It's this small little bar and it's amazing! I lovr it!! I'm going back next week and hopefully moving back to Canyon Lake soon... So I recommend it to everyone .... Go to Canyon Lake Tx.. and you must go ride down the Devil's Backbone! It is a beautiful drive! ... the canyon, the backbone itself .. it's all so beautiful. it is always beautiful! and do not forget to stop at the Devil's Backbone Tavern Canyon Lake Texas ♥️♥️♥️
Let me know, I just got here and I'll go with you
luv it
This song is great tod snider is really good but I tbink double wide blues is his best
This is fantastic!
I'm not sure how many of you realize it, but he really went there. he really new vergie (or however you spell her name) and he actually went there to play. that's awesome. this guy is cool as shit!
Virgie
Yep, RIP "Trog", aka Mark Peterson. I went to HS with him.
@@stevewarner8888 Virgie Bradley was her name. She also happened to be a great aunt of mine.
Rip off of "ALICE'S RESTAURANT" by Arlo.
The concept of telling a story setting up the next song during a live performance predates Arlo Guthrie.
Except Todd Snyder is actually funny, (and more talented).
john smith All storytelling and music is borrowed from the blues. Todd is great, but what would I know, I've only been performing music for over thirty years. Peace.
john smith inspired by and ripped off from are 2 different things. At any rate I love both but prefer this
And Trog was real. I knew him well.
Trog passed away today. RIP, Trog.
RIP Trog! 😢
Noooo!
NOw who’s gonna tell us what we can do
OxfordTown Trog was a good guy. His son Sammy was a patient of mine. Know them well. 🙏🏻
This guy is so good. Arlo Guthrie style. Great stories told so well.
This man is one of the beat story tellers in music.
Thanks, the American story teller lives on.
Love that place.... and the song.
Another reason I skip the Grammys. Best of American Music goes unheard 'cause ClearChannel & their 850 stations just don't "get it"....
Sounds like this was before he got str8.....
Todd Snider is definitely WAY underrated!!
sick.
heard this on outlaw country radio other nite, fell in absolute love with it,love it even more after hearing the story behind it! he is not only one heck of an artist, but his stories are so hilarious (listened to him one other nite too) i love listening to his songs and his stories! had me so laughing! loved this!! great advice she gave him!
She said life isn't easy getting through Everybody's gonna make things tough on you But I can tell you right now if you dig what you do They will never get you down
He is a modern day Woody Gunthrie.
greatness..
