This video was a little bit of a struggle to make for various reasons, but I wanted to put it out there because it shows how you can make pictures of the same area from different angles and capture some really unique shots!

The excitment of the festive season is gone and, in my part of the world, we have been treated to a frozen landscape that has made getting out very difficult. Name change is appropriate! Very GOOD! Photo at 21:14 - the tree on the left should probably be omitted. It is too heavy as a frame. Cropping the center of the image as a vertical or square works very well.

      @@drdirt8276 Thanks, I am glad you liked the name change! Also looking at that shot I think I agree with you a square crop would have probably worked a lot better! Composition is my greatest struggle. The "mechanics" of a proper exposure and development are easier considering my scientific background (think Zone System). I look at some photos I took several years ago and struggle about composition. What seemed right at the time, seems to change with a later review. Oh well. Move on to the next photo.

    Hi James, I love your channel, I came across it just this past weekend, your Changing Seasons video came up as I was looking for something other than someone telling me that I must do it their way or I must use these settings etc otherwise I'm doing it all wrong, those are the type of channels I avoid, I don't need or want someone telling me how I should be taking photos, I'm quite happy with my images and the way I'm taking them. I really just enjoy watching others taking images, how they 'see' and how they compose and frame their shots etc, you're channel is so refreshing and relaxing ! I almost feel like I'm walking alongside you. You really do live in a very beautiful part of the world, those glorious autumn colours, the woodlands, the fields, the views are all so stunning and your images are wonderfully superb. I've spent the last couple of days watching all your videos from your very first one, I've 'liked' them all and I've subcribed and I'm really looking forward to seeing your future content and to watching your channel grow. ps: watching you from the Central Coast in NSW, Australia.

      Wow, thank you so much for this lovely comment! I really agree that no-one should be telling you how to choose your settings - especially if you are happy with your images! Ultimately that is the only measure of success that really matters. I'm still finding my feet with my channel so it's brilliant to read that people are finding it and enjoying the way I make videos. Going on a walk with people is exactly the kind of energy I am going for when I put these together, so it's very rewarding to hear that that is how you have found the videos feel too. Thank you so much for liking the videos, I understand it really helps other people find them, and I hope you enjoy my videos throughout this year. I do try to post once a week so hopefully you can see more of this little corner of the world I call home. You are definitely the first person from Australia to reach out to me, so that is wonderful to hear too! The internet does help make the world a little smaller and more connected doesn't it?

    Hi James, you discovered my channel in recent days and left a message, now I’m returning the favour 😀 I decided to start at your first video, and when I have time, I’ll start working through them. What I like about this video is the way you took time to introduce yourself, what you aim to cover in your videos & some of your photography background. You also came across as comfortable, calm & clear talking to camera. A great start! Videoing my own photo trips recently has given me new found respect for others that do this. When I’m out shooting stills, I’m struggling to remember to take video to tell the story later, I get too carried away with the still shooting! It doesn’t end there though, you then have the whole editing side too. So I’m finding it’s a multi day affair putting these videos out. You go and shoot for a day, then edit your stills for a day, then rough the video cut for a day, then finish off the video edit. It’s time consuming! I’m really enjoying the video editing side, I’m trying new things out most video edits & I can see improvements, but still not where I want to get to in my minds eye, but enjoying the journey getting there. I’m using DaVinci Resolve as my video editor, how about you? So, while I have plenty of ideas on the video edit side, the bit I feel I’m struggling with more is the story telling. How to present my photo trips in ways that are interesting to others. This I have little clue on how to improve if I’m honest. I’m not sure what folk find more interesting, the locations I’m going to, the photography gear I’m using on the photo walk, or the photo settings/techniques/compositions. It’s odd, I’ve watched others UA-cam photo vids for years, but not really thought and identified what I find entertaining about them, I need to analyse this myself, and see what I can do to improve the story telling. This is the aspect I feel most exposed on. How about you?

    • @muddybootsandcameras
      @muddybootsandcameras Місяць тому

      @@TheLDunn1 I totally agree with you on the struggles to remember to take video of certain photos. I try to remember that when we watch other people's videos we have no idea what their original idea for that video looked like, we only see the finished article so we mustn't judge ourselves too harshly there are probably a lot of videos out there that we enjoy but don't live up to the creators' original plans. Thank you so much for the positive comments about my presentation, it was my biggest worry when I started because I am definitely not your typical high energy, buzzy presenter. I think I'm slowly finding my way though, and lots of people have been so kind about my style of video making. I have mostly been using Final Cut to edit with, but my videos rarely use much more than basic cuts and cross disolves. In the new year I am definitely planning on expanding my video editing knowledge though! I am really enjoying watching other channels now with a bit of knowledge on how much effort videos take, I'm trying to learn from and share with as many video creators as I can. I see it as almost a virtual photography club, so if there is anything you see in my future videos you think I could improve on or expand on I welcome any kind constructive critique.

    • @TheLDunn1
      @TheLDunn1 Місяць тому

      @ same here, re the feedback & constructive criticism. I’ve not used Final Cut, I have a little (basic) prior experience with Premiere, but have generally ditched Adobe now. Took a while for me to start with DaVinci Resolve (DR). When I first got DR every time I started to do something in it, I’d take an age to not get very far, then give up and do it in Premiere, must have done that at least 3 times. Eventually I broke through that initial learning barrier, & now I would not even contemplate doing anything in Premiere. DR you can download and use a pretty complete version for free. I’m truely surprised that they give this away for free because it’s an excellent piece of software, very polished, professional and fully featured. There is a ‘paid for’ version called DR Studio, which has a few more features, one of which I was keen on trying out, I also feel quite strongly about giving good companies some money if I find their free or trial products useful & good. So during the Black Friday sales, I looked into buying the studio version, which was on 20% off sale, but, before I hit the ‘buy’ button, I stumbled upon them doing a ‘speed edit’ console which comes bundled with DR Resolve for only £130 more, so I went for that. I’ve watched a few UA-cam vids by DR processionals, and they taught me how to use the software ‘correctly’. Like most things, when you just jump in and dabble you develop bad habits, which I had done. Getting the Speed Editor forced me to learn how to use it, and DR properly, which I’m certainly starting to benefit from. Now I have the basics largely sorted, I’ve started adding layers of complexity onto the editing process, there’s a fair bit of experimentation still going on, and in some ways, I think I’ve gone backward, but it’s for a greater good hopefully as I am trying things out with the aim of improving. I decided to show all my unprocessed images & the processed images at the end of my video, instead of mid way through while I’m taking them. I’m still undecided if this is the right approach for me or not, there are pros & cons. I found with your first video,I wanted to see your processed shots all together at the end, but this might just be me, because it’s the way I like to do it, I don’t know.

    Hi again, the fundamental element to any type of photography is light. Light is the connection between you and your camera. Understanding this connection is crucial to what you see through your eyes to the image your camera actually captures. The human eye and a modern digital camera sensor are completely different. But that's a subject for another day's discussion. This is the complexity of photography which fascinates me. Great discussion of the use of a wireless flash, which I'm going to explore. Hi james. I think you have cracked the talking to the camera. Really enjoyed the walk around a new area. Look forward to another visit in the future. I was just wondering what the woodland has to offer in a different season. I use a canon eos m100. On scouting a new area and a small tripod. Camera in pocket. Tripod in sling over the shoulder and you are away. Regards David

The EOS M cameras are really underrated I find, I know the original I used once was a fun and engaging tool!

      @jameshchetwyndjr9739 f/11 gave me the depth of field I needed, and with a tripod the shutter speed can be what it wants - I used to shoot way wider when I handheld shooting made shutter speed a constant concern. I am finding a tripod helps me avoid making such compromises in my photos.

    James I have old Pentax cameras I photograph with my film camera is a Pentax Spotamatic SP2,. My Pentax DSLR cameras are a *istDL, K100D and a K3-11. I had Apature block failure on my K50 & K70 so I purchased my first used camera my Pentax K3-11 when the Pentax K3 Mark iii came out i waited a couple of years and bought a used one for the fast autofocus as i had begun photographing wildlife and I needed the faster autofocus. I replaced the Apature block on my Pentax K50 & K70 and have since loaned the cameras to my son good luck on me ever getting them back from my son but I am quite happy with the Pentax K3 cameras

      @muddybootsandcameras 3 місяці тому

      @@scrptwic haha yeah good luck with the cameras you "loaned", although I am glad to hear your son is enjoying them so much! I loved the K30 so much I bought a used one with the aperture issue you described, fixed it and installed the K50 software on it to use the 55-300mm PLM lens on. Of all the brands I have tried this year I think the Pentax cameras have been the most well rounded and full featured cameras. They have a little bit of everything, don't they? I have not used a K3 but I can only assume they carry on those same attributes and then some! Wildlife is an area of photography I would dearly love to explore more (apart from the occasional agreeable squirrel) so it's great that these cameras are helping you enjoy your passion, I love to read stuff like this!

    Hi james. Approximately 7 minutes into the video. The stone wall is an amazing piece of work. I think an image from the top of the wall on the right bottom corner will change the perspective because the fern growing against the wall and a different angle. I mentioned in a previous comment that using your phone to frame up is a pretty useful tool. Try removing one leg from the tripod to create a monopod with your phone or picture frame attached. This allows the surrounding area to be a completely different view. I mentioned this because I am a wheelchair user.but not all the time. So my perspective is different. Regards David

    Hi james It is a very interesting narrative, and I like what you do. Your vision for an image and thought process, i use my tripod on most expeditions. I usually set up my image in camera. But I will use my phone camera to move around the area I have set up in and see if I may have a better shot at a slightly different angle or height. Regards David
