Taking photographs and talking about the joy of photography.
How We Learn. Over and Over Again.
Getting better at anything takes time, patience and practice.
Today's video we will have a look at how that works for photographers.
Using the Pentax Q10, a tripod and some mental agility. I start with one image and work my way through composition trial and error to make the best photos I can. Taking you along with me every step of the way.
Please leave any questions you may have in the comments below and I will do my best to answer them there, or maybe cover them in the next video!

This week we enjoy the excitement of visiting a new place for photography. It is an amazing feeling I get when exploring a new place, because I have no idea what is around the corner, and it could be anything. We are in the cool looking woodland near Silkstone Common in South Yorkshire. I see it quite often from the train but have, until today's video, never taken photos there. There are highs ...

There's so much rushing about in today's modern world. Join me on a quiet walk around a local reservoir, taking picturers as we go. This was the result of an increasingly rare sunny day spent exploring Broadstone Reservoir in South Yorkshire, UK. It's a free to visit area around a privately owned reservoir that has a lot natural and man-made appeal. As always I had so much fun, and I am finding...

Very enjoyable vid 👍
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch my video! I am super pleased you enjoyed it, I had a lot of fun making it, theres a few more videos on my channel if you liked this one I hope you like the others :)
Thanks Rob. I've enjoyed your autumn videos. Looking forward to seeing what you'll do in winter.
I'm so happy to hear you've enjoyed my videos, I look forward to sharing my winter adventures with you going forward too!
Just ordered a flash gun for Minolta Dimage 7i, which I can use on my other Dimage cameras. Regards Rob.
@@robstammers7149 This is great to hear! I think you will have a lot to experiment with there, the Minolta flash mount super proprietary isn't it? Great work finding a flash for it!
It's the Minolta Program 3600 HS D gun, it has a diffuser fitted too, it's a wireless model which works in conjunction with the Dimage 7i. It suits my needs perfectly as it will fit my Z5 and Z6, I have the Dimage A1 & A2, I have to check it'll work with them, particularly the A2 which I love using. Regards Rob.
Hi again, the fundamental element to any type of photography is light. Light is the connection between you and your camera. Understanding this connection is crucial to what you see through your eyes to the image your camera actually captures. The human eye and a modern digital camera sensor are completely different. But that's a subject for another day's discussion. This is the complexity of photography which fascinates me. Great discussion of the use of a wireless flash, which I'm going to explore. Many thanks Regards Rob.
Couldn't agree more, light is crucial! I think my biggest light bulb moment was realising with flash there is essentially two exposures happening at once - the ambient light and the flash, and you reduce either in favour of the other and find a nice balanced look. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment on my video again! It's so appreciated!

Great to have a fellow old camera user along for the ride! There's something fun about creating with supposedly limiting gear that teaches you it's not that limited after all! Thanks for subscribing!
I really appreciate your video quality is amazing. But not many views, not many subscribers. Because many errors in your channel. Like tag sections, description, title, keywords are many errors in your channel. As a result your video SEO score is very low. So I recommend you need to proper SEO and PROMOTION. And if you want you can boost. Then increase lot's of views and subscribers in your channel. As a result you get monetize option.

Hi james. I think you have cracked the talking to the camera. Really enjoyed the walk around a new area. Look forward to another visit in the future. I was just wondering what the woodland has to offer in a different season. I use a canon eos m100. On scouting a new area and a small tripod. Camera in pocket. Tripod in sling over the shoulder and you are away. Regards David
@@daviddunmow thanks so much David! I really am grateful for that comment as I feel I'm making positive steps in the right direction with every upload - I'm definitely more confident than when I started! The EOS M cameras are really underrated I find, I know the original I used once was a fun and engaging tool!
This light is blink not there. F11 in this light?
@jameshchetwyndjr9739 f/11 gave me the depth of field I needed, and with a tripod the shutter speed can be what it wants - I used to shoot way wider when I handheld shooting made shutter speed a constant concern. I am finding a tripod helps me avoid making such compromises in my photos.

James I have old Pentax cameras I photograph with my film camera is a Pentax Spotamatic SP2,. My Pentax DSLR cameras are a *istDL, K100D and a K3-11. I had Apature block failure on my K50 & K70 so I purchased my first used camera my Pentax K3-11 when the Pentax K3 Mark iii came out i waited a couple of years and bought a used one for the fast autofocus as i had begun photographing wildlife and I needed the faster autofocus. I replaced the Apature block on my Pentax K50 & K70 and have since loaned the cameras to my son good luck on me ever getting them back from my son but I am quite happy with the Pentax K3 cameras
@@scrptwic haha yeah good luck with the cameras you "loaned", although I am glad to hear your son is enjoying them so much! I loved the K30 so much I bought a used one with the aperture issue you described, fixed it and installed the K50 software on it to use the 55-300mm PLM lens on. Of all the brands I have tried this year I think the Pentax cameras have been the most well rounded and full featured cameras. They have a little bit of everything, don't they? I have not used a K3 but I can only assume they carry on those same attributes and then some! Wildlife is an area of photography I would dearly love to explore more (apart from the occasional agreeable squirrel) so it's great that these cameras are helping you enjoy your passion, I love to read stuff like this!

Hi james. Great job. Really appreciate it, and i enjoyed the video. What I like about watching your videos is that you are actually outside making images and not sitting behind a desk telling people how to take images. Regards David
Thanks again David, I may occaisonally start or end a video at home, but I really want the majority of the content to be outdoors because that is genuinely where I feel happiest and I am glad it's had a positive impact on your enjoyment of the videos!
Hi james. Approximately 7 minutes into the video. The stone wall is an amazing piece of work. I think an image from the top of the wall on the right bottom corner will change the perspective because the fern growing against the wall and a different angle. I mentioned in a previous comment that using your phone to frame up is a pretty useful tool. Try removing one leg from the tripod to create a monopod with your phone or picture frame attached. This allows the surrounding area to be a completely different view. I mentioned this because I am a wheelchair user.but not all the time. So my perspective is different. Regards David
@@daviddunmow thank you so much for your comments - and I agree I love stone walls! I really think the ability we have with our phones now is truly magic! The monopod idea is fab too - I will definitely keep that in mind! Anything that makes photography more accessible is a good thing in my opinion - and it's great to put out as many tips as possible, thanks so much for all your comments!
Hi james. Congratulations on the milestone. The image of the train was very cool. I liked how you managed to capture the train through the trellis work of the bridge. Quick thinking. Regards David
Thank you, it is still really amazing me that anyone would be willing to spend their time with me and my thoughts on photography, I am so so grateful for all the encouraging comments. The train was very much right time right place, but I am glad I was out with taking pictures in mind! I have seen it a couple of times without my camera with me and always felt I'd missed out!
Hi james It is a very interesting narrative, and I like what you do. Your vision for an image and thought process, i use my tripod on most expeditions. I usually set up my image in camera. But I will use my phone camera to move around the area I have set up in and see if I may have a better shot at a slightly different angle or height. Regards David
I definitely was guilty of not using a tripod as much as I could have in the past - it's something I'm way more encouraging of now, I think it has genuinely improved my photographs no end!
This is a fantastic idea. To me it will help focus on my composition in all types of photography
That is fantastic to hear - I am really glad it helped, I tried lots of things to help improve my composition and found that it needn't be about "rules" as such but ways of "seeing" images that please you. It's a learn by doign kind of practice and that is really rewarding for me. Thank you so much for your comment, it really means a lot!
Just subscribed.looking forward to the journey👍😀
That's so cool, thank you so much! 🙂🙂
What a simple but brilliant idea, I'm gobsmacked, it's a beautiful idea, I'm gonna give this a go. Regards Rob.
Thank you! I hoped it would be a boost to anyone who wanted to practice their composition skills, and it's great to hear it's been a bit of an inspiration 🙂
I was going to suggest a director's eyepiece to help you work through a shot, but there's something about the starkness of that white border... it imprints on the mind's eye differently, rather like a sort of wooden rangefinder 🧐
I do like the idea of anything that can help train your eyes to frame things. The only thing they all suffer from is not being super exact to your lens/camera setup but its something you can build on over time. I think the first battle is understanding what in a scene caught your eye, and then building from there. It's all about constant and small improvements over time 😊
Been up there photographing those windmills a few times

Amazing James on passing 100 subs, of which I'm one of. You are going forward and we are with you for the long term. Cheers fella Regards Rob, Yorkshire.
It's so appreciated, thank you for all your helpful comments already! Glad to have you along!
One more ? Do you use GoPro for your moving shots and talking?
Yeah I use an action camera made by DJI because their wireless mics are a real doddle to setup for talking to camera - I have really enjoyed using it as a setup, the only thing it doesn't do is focus (it's a fixed focus so at arms length most things are in focus but I can't use it to show the back screen of the camera I'm using very easily) but apart from that it's brilliant and just what I needed!
Also like the look of your camera backpack, what brand and does it work well?
It's a bag made by K&F Concept - I have to admit the fact it matched the colour of my coat was a big draw initially - but it has turned out to be a really flexible bag that holds a lot of gear very comfortably. I think they do an all black model too - I really like it in the yellow though!
Really enjoyed your video and content. How do you get such nice video image quality, 4k or other? Which editing software? Thx.
@@gregpatterson134 Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it - the footage in this video was recorded with a mixture of an OM System OM-1 and a DJI Action 4 - they are both really fab video cameras for doing this kind of thing. I use Final Cut but I am nothing close to an expert on the software. I have tried to record everything in LOG and colour corrected as best I could in Final Cut. Once I get a more stable method of putting stuff together I may need to do a video to show how I do it but I'm not super confident I'm doing it right yet.

I love an old Pentax. I still have an old Pentax 645 120 film camera with several lenses. it takes beautiful pictures with beautiful bokeh. I loved the farmhouse image by the way! your audio is very low though.
@@SeaAngMo23 yeah they are often seen as the underdog but I love Pentax's approach to making cameras! I am often tempted by one of their 645 digital cameras actually! Thanks for watching my video, and I am definitely working on my audio, I think I have been editing with my computers volume too high - so I was always trying to avoid it distorting - I'm hoping I've got it sorted now though for the next ones!
I looked at the 645Z, I really wanted it, but they were being discontinued and you would have to send it to Thailand for service, So I went with a Canon 5DSR. The irony is, I now live in Singapore, small world. (Seaman by trade, photography as a passion)

Good video James i tend to look at the wind turbines as a piece of art these days and i enjoyed you're chat to the camera i myself don't tend to give out hints and tips but usefully just talk through the process of the image I'm going to take which is just me being me and i think we just need to be ourselves that's what helps make the vlogs different to others. Hi james A very interesting area to explore. I very much enjoyed your narrative .can I suggest that you have no music when you are talking. Far to distracting. Apart from that grump. Great videos Regards David
@@daviddunmow pleased you enjoyed it - it really is a great little reservoir and the surrounding area has lots of footpaths to explore. The "grump" was not a grump at all, it's a very valid point!
