Can a Burn Barrel make a Heat Pump produce more heat?
In this video I did some testing of my new burn barrel stove that I made using the US Stove Burn Barrel Kit. My goal was to see if my mini split produced more heat after the burn barrel was burning. The test results from the burn barrel really surprised me...

    You need to be taking amperage readings from the mini split to see if the mini split has reduced power as the outside warms up it takes less energy to condense the heat your testing is inconclusive

    Simple answer without watching the video. Increasing the temperature of the fluid, in this case air, going through the heat pump will increase the efficiency. That won't necessarily increase the temperature it outputs. Heat recovery is possible by venting any warmer than ambient gasses, such as a shower/bathroom extract, backup furnace/boiler outlet, or literally any other waste heat through the heap pump evaporator.

  • @NBSV1
    @NBSV1 День тому

    The heat pump is just pulling heat from outside and moving it to the inside. So, yea. If you make it warmer outside it’ll be better able to move that heat to inside. Opposite goes for the A/C. It’s pulling heat from inside and moving it to outside. If you made it colder outside it’d work even better. At the end of the day you’re wasting a lot of heat from the burn barrel just radiating away from the heat pump. Ideally would just have the burn barrel inside and use it to quickly raise the temp for comfort while the heat pump maintains a lower temp.

  • @davidalton7378
    @davidalton7378 День тому

    You are perhaps making incorrect assumptions. The heat pump will have a maximum heat transfer capability.. What will differ is the amount of AC power required to move the heat. The warmer the outside air the less energy it will take to move that maximum. Your idea is sound but your measurements are not. The unit will have an efficiency curve you can probably find in the specs.

  • @Killerean
    @Killerean День тому

    I'm 23 seconds in and I already have my face in my hands. The answer is yesnt. When it's savagely freezing outside, the hot air from burn barrel will improve the operation of the AC unit, allowing it to pump consistent heat, using less electricity. However, the AC will only reach operating temperature faster. It will not pump more heat than it's design specs allow. That is if the AC can heat the output air to 40˚C, it will do that and no more. The burn barrel however provides also a great risk. The AC relies on multiple sensors to adjust it's operation. Heating just one side of the AC can trow these sensors off kilter and turn it off (best case scenario) or destroy it. If you want to heat the shop faster, just buy a decent stove, build a chimney, and don't mess with your AC unit.

  • @jfbeam
    @jfbeam День тому

    You didn't measure the heat pump efficiency. That's an inverter compressor system, so it will adjust the load to provide basically the same level of heat to the space all the time. It's not as if setting the condenser on fire will have the same effect on the wall unit. It's already putting out air as hot as it's willing to create. As someone else mentioned, do this when it's below freezing. Or better, near freezing where the thing will be spending energy defrosting the condenser coils. (i.e. do it on a day when it can't make ~100F.) It is making a difference, but you'll have to measure electrical power use to see it.

    What if I told you that there's a simple way to get like 80% thermal efficiency out of this home made stove instead of the like 0% he's getting? It's really super simple - Move the stove inside the shop to heat it directly instead of trying to heat the whole outside and then moving that heat into the shop from there...

      @@MikesGarageRoute66 I was wondering what if you were to put the outdoor condenser in a shed of some sort so it could also absorb heat and wouldn't be all lost to the outside. Would have to be open somewhat to not totally restrict the air circulation. The reason for using it outside, below freezing and without an enclosure is if the heater is 80% efficient but the heat pump is 300% efficient wouldn't you get more energy out of it than it were just inside the building? also its more work to install it inside the building? also what about heating water with an outdoor stove and the water would sit outside the condenser somehow?

    • @jfbeam
      @jfbeam День тому

      @@BenMorse0 Modern designs can. I've seen specs going below 0F. That's going to be a very cold outside coil! The problem is crossing the freezing point. To work well, there needs to be a rather large temp difference between the coil and air. At 40F, there's only 8 degrees before the coil will begin to freeze, and 8F is not a very big difference. I don't know how cold his system will get the coils. (Even in the coldest places on Earth, there's still energy in the air. You can still get colder.)

    You thought this would work how? Heating uninsulated air and expecting it to transfer to the heat pump exchanger ? I’m confused. Insulation and a closed unit could possibly help but there are better ways bro. Easiest way to get additional heat out of a heat pump would be to add a cavitation section of piping to your heat pump unit could definitely do the job but it can be dangerous. I’m sure there are resources if you dig deep enough. I remember seeing a video on UA-cam of a company that made heat pumps and to their surprise when they calculated efficiency the units were 140% efficient. It was due to cavitation created in the pump itself through shear. They couldn’t sell any units for over a year because they advertised as %140 efficient and nobody believed it. Changed their advertising to 99% efficient and sold a bunch. People are funny. If you want more info on cavitation and excess heat I can send you a few links let me know and good luck !

    One thing about your setup is the fact that it's not really too cold yet outside for the heat pump to not be able to pull heat out of the outside air. If you were to do it when it was well below freezing, then you would see the biggest difference.

    Your test is flawed! 1. Heating your shop from from 50 to 54 is not the same as heating it starting from 54. You should have ventilated your shop to start back from the same temp. 2. You don't measure efficiency by how many degrees your shop temp increased, efficiency is measured by how much power the heat pump used to generate x amount of heat. You did not even test the power consumption of the unit. 3. This heat pump is of the inverter type, it ramps up and down based on the indoor temp which again explains point number 1 and 2. 4. You measure temp gains by measuring the difference between ambient air (intake/top of the indoor unit) and the air coming out of the indoor unit (exhaust at the blade) OR by measuring the delta temps of the copper coils. You do not measure how much heat the shop gained in 15 minutes, your floor walls objects in your shop will absorb heat faster at 50 degrees than at 54 degrees! Lookup COP, it is a scientific fact.

    1. The indoor unit dosen't take air from the outside, its circulate the inside air only, and the only connection between the outside and inside unit is the 2 pipes with gas/liquid and the electrical wires. 2. If you are heating the air outside the compressor don't have to work so hard and that is the biggest game changer for you heat pump. 3. Put the stove and heat pump in a container and try again, that will make a big difference as long as the container is warmer than the outside!!
