Debussy's Blüthner was a 1904 'Aliquot' model with extra strings on the top three octaves. He bought this in Eastbourne on the south coast of England after having hired one for his stay at the Grand Hotel there. It's likely that the first work he composed at this instrument was 'Reflets dans l'eau', a replacement first movt. for Images bk1. Debussy took the Blüthner back to Paris where it had pride of place in his salon. After his death and that of Emma Bardac the piano passed to Bardac's son Raoul who moved to Brive. On his death his wife gifted the instrument to her doctor who sold it to a local dealer. It was subseqently bought by the museum in Brive where it still resides to this day.

Bösendorfer sounds clearer, more accurate and overall creates a calmer fealling. For those reasons is my preference.

A fascinating and really interesting video on piano restoration. I have a baby Bluthner and would like that done to mine, although not in anyway as bad as the Bosendorfer, a piano that produces such an exciting sound.

Very nice, thank you for sharing. I've got a 1912 Grotrian-Steinweg short grand, bought it when a University Music Department was getting rid of it as well as some Steinways, Bluthners, Bösendorfers, etc. Went for the Grotrian-Steinweg (marked as "Steinweg Sucessors" for marketing for import into the UK I imagine) as it had become my preferred practice piano rather than all the other ones, both for responsiveness of action (repetition) and tone. Always been interested in Erards and recently tried an 1880s London Erard. Loved the action, and tone inspiring despite being out of tune. What struck me about the Erard's action response in addition to excellent repetition, and what I feel like I can also hear in your playing the Grotrian-Steinweg in this video is the fine dynamic control in particular the fine ability to play softly, subtly and sensitively - not softly from the perspective of an audience member in a large concert hall, but softly from the perspective of the pianist, which I struggle with on many modern pianos, also still somewhat on my 1912 Grotrian-Steinweg (possibly partly due to wear and tear, though have had technical work done on action regulation, possible due to inherent limitation of design).

I'm currently working on the dampers of my 1867 London Erard. Did you have to replace the springs and glue the felt to the moving arm? I'm not sure what the best glue would be.

Complimenti.🤗

I recently went to a ‘venue, where there was a Steinway, Model M, (6’) undamped, and so out of tune it made the enamel on my teeth flake off and my eyes water. WHO DOES THAT to a piano ? It is not just an offence - it is a SIN. i was torn between setting fire to it to put it out of its misery and making an offer of £5
